Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the
sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代 ), the ancient people loved
sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there
was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only
served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and

{#{QQABJYSUggigAgAAAQgCEQFiCACQkgAAAQgGBAAAIAAByAFABAA=}#}
economic (经济的) development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only
tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of
sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆 ) as the
material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have
to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to
produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon
a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in
shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be
willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting
has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the
ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage
(非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, missed and passed on.
34. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Valuable and expensive. B. Useful and cheap. C. Special but worthless.
35. When did sugar painting appear
A. In the Warring States Period. B. In the Tang Dynasty. C. In the Ming Dynasty.
36. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly
A. To show their excellent skills.
B. To avoid syrup becoming hard.
C. To protect the spoon and the table.
37. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Worried.

The word silk itself is beautiful. The story of silk started in China over 4,000 years ago. One
story says a silkworm’s cocoon (茧 ) fell into a woman’s teacup. It then opened into a single
unbroken thread (线 ). This was an important discovery. The Chinese learned they could use the
cocoons to make cloth that was both beautiful to look at and soft to touch.
Making silk was a protected secret in China for many years. In other countries, silk was very
valuable. Often it was worth more than gold. It was said that the secret was finally given away when
a queen left China for India. In her hair, she secretly carried many silkworms.
By the year l AD, silk was sold as far west as Rome, and all along the Silk Road. Finally,
around the year 300, silk also travelled from China to Japan. In 1522, the Spanish brought silkworms
to Mexico.
Today people around the world still make many beautiful things from silk. But silk isn’t only
beautiful. It looks easy to break, but actually it’s very strong. For example, people has already used it
to make bicycle wheels. And some doctors even use silk threads in hospital. Silk is also lightweight
and warm. This makes it great for clothes like winter jackets, trousers and shoes.
All of this is from a little silkworm. That is the magic of silk.

named Kursat decided 57 (make) a change. Kursat is blind. He deeply understands
the 58 (difficulty) and challenges that the blind face. He put some technical knowledge into
his invention and invented a smart stick. He hoped his invention would help the blind.
The smart stick uses built-in speakers and different sensors (传感器 ) to warn about possible
dangers. It helps blind people know about the environment around 59 (they) by using modern
technology. It makes their travel much 60 (easy) than before. The stick is priced at around
$500. It is less than half the price of most smart phones. Most people can afford it.
In the future, this invention is going to make a big 61 (different) to more blind people. “It
will not only change my life, 62 also the life of other people.” Kursat said, “These days, we

五、写作 (共两节,满分 20 分)
第一节 信息归纳(共 5小题;每小题 1分,满分 5分)

Teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep per night. However, Many can’t fall asleep until
10:30 p.m. or even later and most of them will feel sleepy.
Scientists recommend that both middle and high schools begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Later
school start times support the natural needs of teenagers and increase their sleeping time.
Here are some other benefits of later school start times:
More time for a healthy breakfast
When running late in the mornings, students are likely to go without breakfast. With an empty
stomach, one finds it difficult to focus (集中 ) in class. If they have enough time before going to
school, students can eat a well-balanced breakfast and focus more on learning.
Fewer behavioral (行为的) problems
Less sleep may cause worries, stress and unhappiness.
When they get enough sleep, students are calm and peaceful and their moods do not change
suddenly. They’re less likely to feel worried, unhappy or get angry. For parents, children with more
sleep are easier to live with.
Better performance (表现) in study
九年级英语试题 第 9页(共 10页)
{#{QQABJYSUggigAgAAAQgCEQFiCACQkgAAAQgGBAAAIAAByAFABAA=}#}
Less sleep hurts attention, memory and brain development. Students with less sleep have
difficulty paying attention in class and are likely to have lower grades. Students with enough sleep
can be more energetic during the day and more willing to learn. They are also less likely to fall
asleep in class and more able to understand what they learn.
In conclusion, starting school later helps students get a better night’s sleep. It improves their
chances of eating, behaving and performing better.
