Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the small forest near his home. The forest was a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants. It was also a perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature.
One day, he heard that the local government would cut down all the trees in the forest to build houses. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted, so he decided to do something. After he spent some time doing research about the area, Andrew wrote letters to the local government and TV reporters. Andrew’s teachers described him as an active boy. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, he asked his neighbors for help by going door to door. In only one month, about 260 families supported him.
In the end, his action worked and the local government gave up their plan. Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and finally help save the environment.

Shadow play, known as“Ying zi xi”in Chinese, is a kind of ancient shadow art. It has a history
of about 2,000 years in China, India and Southeast Asia. The moving shadows on a screen are used
to tell history and folk stories. And hand shadow is one of the simplest ways to make shadow play.
With a bit of practice, most people can change the shape of hands to make animals, like dogs and
birds, on the wall.
Today, shadow art has developed into one more creative style. In the spring of 2016,Vincent
Bal, an artist in Europe, turned the shadows into a clever art form—shadow drawing. He named
this special drawing “Shadowology”. In the Shadowology, a little drawing is added into the
shadows of everyday things to create wonderful pictures.
Like most good things in life, Shadowology came by accident. One day, during a break from
work, Bal noticed that the shadow of his teacup looked like a little elephant. He drew eyes, legs and
a smile for the shadow, and took a photo of that. After sharing the photo on the Internet, Bal
surprisingly found people’s love for it, which encouraged him to continue.
Since then, Bal has got 600,000 fans on the Internet. He keeps producing as many different
shadow works as possible. For example, he made a pair of sunglasses look like the wings of a
butterfly, and a bottle become a lamp. All his works are interesting and playful. In 2023, Bal finished
Shadowology films and a museum exhibition.

drawing, people have got a chance to see the beauty in everyday things and discover the joy all around
in such a busy world.

building lots of tall and thin buildings. Developers are trying to build higher and higher buildings.
However, the government has made laws that don’t allow developers to build too high buildings.
Oiio Studio thinks about things differently, “What if our buildings were not tall but long ” So
the founder of Oiio Studio, Ioannis Oikonomou, designed a U-shaped building, the Big Bend. It
would be a very thin building. It would curve(弯曲) at the top and return to the
ground. Oikonomou said he thought of the great idea because he learned from a
piece of news. It said that a company made a lift that could travel in curves. So he
designed the Big Bend. He thought it as “the longest building in the world”. It
would be 4,000 feet from end to end and would need a different lift system.
“We can’t change the law, _____▲_____. So if we can bend(使弯曲 ) our
building, we would be able to build one of the most amazing buildings in
Manhattan,”Oiio Studio said.
The Big Bend is just an idea for now. Oikonomou has sent the plans to a few
companies, and is looking for developers. If successful, they will build the Big
Bend around West 57th Street, just to the south of Central Park.

When she was 14 years old, Remya Jose’s life was turned upside down by a family crisis(危
机).
Remya, who lived in a small village in India, learned that her
mother was ill and her father would have to spend his time caring for
her. As a result, she and her twin sister had to do most of the housework
— including washing clothes. To make things even more difficult, the
Jose family couldn’t afford an electric washing machine. Instead, the
two girls would have to do the washing all by hand in the local river,
and then carefully carry everything back to their home—a task that took several hours.
Being a good student interested in engineering, Remya wanted to make a washing machine
which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they

worked. Remya then designed(设计) a machine that used bicycle pedals(踏板) and chain. To find
those items, she and her father went to a local auto shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts,
they helped her make the machine!
Here’s how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder(圆筒) to hold the clothes and put it in a
cube(立方体 ). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya
pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing
machine.
Remya’s invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine—and
now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Remya’s washing machine was
chosen from among 25, 000 entries as India’s best innovation! She was given India’s National
Award and honored by the nation’s former president.
The story of this young woman’s creative invention was known around the world.
“Remya Jose made a difference,” said Jeanine Thomas of The Borden Project, “Her invention
saves time and money for the world’s poor. Her story shows that with creativity, one individual can
improve the lives of many. ”

Zhejiang Province’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Oil paper umbrellas used to be seen everywhere here. However, as steel-ribbed( 钢 骨

into decorative(装饰性的) artworks.
To bring the art to life, some umbrella-making masters in Yuhang have improved oil paper
umbrellas. As the traditional paper is easy to break, they use a thicker paper. So the umbrellas can
be opened and closed 1,000 times without breaking. And a lighter kind of bamboo is used to make
ribs. So, the umbrellas weigh less. This kind of umbrellas has won the hearts ofmany young people.
