Sportsmen in the running races of the Olympics are great athletes, but even the slowrunners of the
running world—joggers in the park— have good health. A study out this week in the Journal of the
American College of Cardiology finds that even 5 to 10 minutes a day of slow running is enough to extend
life by several years, compared with not running at all.
The new study focused on a group of more than 55,000 men andwomen aged 18 to 100.About a quarter
of them were runners.Over 15 years, those who ran just 50 minutes a week or fewer at aslow speed were less
likely to die from either cardiovascular(心血管的) disease or other causes, compared with thosewho didn't
run at all.
The study suggests relatively low efforts are necessary to benefit from jogging, but it can be better to
exercise more often.“Alittle bit is good but a little more is probably better,” says Dr. Aaron Baggish. A2013
study in Denmark suggested that the secret of maximum longevity is up to 2.5 hours of running a week
Although running can make you less likely to have cardiovascular disease, it doesn't entirely take the
risk away from you.“There is no question that the healthier you are and the more exercise you do, the longer
you'llive and the better your quality of life will be,” Dr. Baggish says.“But it doesn't mean you'll never get
sick.”
“Many long-term runners do not run because they want to live longer,”Dr. Baggish notes.“They run
because it makes them feel better every day.”
For these runners, the cost of feeling good can be injuries, so Dr. Baggish supports the value of what he
calls “active rest.”His belief, not supported by any recent research, is that it's a good idea to spend 25of

Harvard researchers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable(可生物降解的)material inspired
by insects'hard outer shells. The material's inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could
provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp(虾)shells
and proteins produced from silk, is called“shrilk” It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.
A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a
revolution in materials science during the 1950s and 1960s. Decades later, however, plastic's very durability
(耐用性)is raising questions about how suitable it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or
short-lived consumer goods, used inthe home for a few years and then thrown into a landfill where they will
stay for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years
Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料), and so
will enrich the soil.
Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature,
found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost,
and its mass production possible if it is used for products demanding a lot of material.
Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so
they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production processes,
which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home.
They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.

sweep across the country. (17) There are heavy winds, some reaching up to 100 miles per hour. The
roads are very dangerous and there is a driving warning in effect. Many of the areas affected are still
trying to deal with the effects of yesterday's heavy rains, which caused flooding and water damage.
Traffic conditions are described as terrible, and many roads are closed due to accidents.(18)
There is panic(恐慌) in some areas as many parts are without power tonight. It can't be said when it
will be fixed, although authorities say it will be no later than tomorrow evening.(19)Next, let's
