One of the best-known stories in English history is that of King Alfred and the cakes.
Children are taught the story in which Alfred was on the run from soldiers who were
invading his country from Denmark and Norway. Alfred hid in the house of a poor woman.
She asked him to watch her cakes being baked by the fire. Alfred was thinking about his
problems while he was watching the cakes. So he let the cakes burn and was shouted at by
the angry poor woman. No one knows if the story is really true. Certainly, Alfred was the
king of parts of England from 871 to 899 and he did have to fight off the armies that entered
his country. Maybe the poor woman would not know how important he was. In those days,
news did not always travel to places far away. But whether the story is true or false, it is a
good way of helping young people take an interest in the very rich history of their country.

第二节 读后续写
Every night, when I knew I wouldn’ t be interrupted(打扰), I would start to
train. With each passing day, I became more skilled at moving myself into the chair and
sought greater progress. Holding a walking stick, I slowly put my weight on my feet and
rose to my feet. Difficult as it was at the very beginning, the phrase “ give up” never
popped into my mind. Fueled by unwavering self-belief, I persisted in my practice, night
after night. And every midnight witnessed my struggle to move another inch farther.
Fortunately, all my efforts paid off—I made it!
It came the time to share my achievements with the person most important to me.
One night, when hearing my son’ s footsteps outside, I pulled myself into the chair and
dragged myself up. As he opened the door, I mustered the strength and staggered a few
steps. Shocked, this little ten-year-old boy stood rooted to the spot. This time, instead of
fear, a light of excitement twinkled in my lovely boy’s eyes. “Mommy, you can walk!” he
exclaimed, sprinting into my open arms. The moment I heard these words, all of the pain
faded, and the power of belief surged in my heart.

All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain at all times clean and tidy.
You could turn your back for a moment in my mother's house, leave a half written letter on the dining table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had“put it back where it belonged,” as she explained.
My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother's house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused, she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that everyone in my family held onto their drinks so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now she knows better.
These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to (有······倾向) forgetfulness, and it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find that every sign of his work in progress had disappeared suddenly. “Do you remember what I was doing” was a question frequently asked, but rarely answered.
Now my sister has developed a secondhand love of cleaning windows, and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to lift his feet. I try not to think about it too much, but I have at this later time started to dust the furniture once a week.
24. Which of the following is TRUE about my mother
A. She enjoyed removing others' drinks. B. She became more and more forgetful.
C. She preferred to do everything by herself. D. She wanted to keep her house in good order.
25. My wife could not find her biscuits and drink in my mother's house because .
A. she had already finished them B. she forgot where she had left them
C. my mother had taken them away D. someone in my family was holding them
26. The underlined part“Now my sister has developed a secondhand love of cleaning windows” in the fifth paragraph suggests that my sister .
A. is happy to clean windows B. loves to clean used windows
C. develops interest in cleaning windows again. D. likes cleaning windows as my mother
27. This passage mainly tells us that .
A. my mother helped us to form a good habit
B. my family members had a poor memory
C. my wife was surprised when she visited my mother
D. my mother often made us confused

Australia officially listed koalas(考拉) across its eastern coast as“endangered” on Friday. Conservationists said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala a globally recognized symbol of Australia’ s unique wildlife, had been listed as“vulnerable (易受 伤害的)” on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented(史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment, Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus $50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas’ new status but blamed Australia’ s failure to protect the species so far. “Koulas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF—— Australia conservation scientist Stuart Blanch. “Today’ s decision is welcome, but it won't stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it's accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinet by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can't afford any more clearing,” she said. “The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added, “we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging(伐木).”
Australia's koalas had been living on a“knife edge” even before the“Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon ,” Sharrad said. “The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing, and seriously deal with the impacts of climate change.”
28. Why did environmentalists welcome the koalas’ new status
A. This would stop koalas from extinction.
B. They may have time to recover koala habitats.
C. They could blame the government's failure.
D. This could lead to action to protect koalas.
29. What's the main idea of the third paragraph
A. The koalas’ new status was welcomed.
B. Australian government should be blamed.
C. Australia hasn't been successful in protecting species.
D. Koalas will no longer be in danger.
30. How does Sharrad feel about the present state of Koalas
A. Frightened. B. Concerned. C. Disappointed. D. Satisfied.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Australia Lists Koalas as Endangered B. Koalas Will Live on a Knife Edge
C. Koalas: Australia's National Icon D. Bushfires: Koala Killers in Australia
D
The demanding process of forming our thoughts, letter by letter, on the page is becoming a relic(遗物) of the past in our screen-dominated world, where typed messages have replaced handwritten letters. However, giving up handwriting may come at a significant cost.
Both handwriting and typing involve moving our hands and fingers to create words on a page. But handwriting seems to more deeply engage the brain in ways that support learning. For example, to type “tap”, your fingers don’ t have to trace out the form of the letters —— they just make relatively simple and similar movements. In comparison, it takes a lot more brainpower, as well as cross-talk between brain areas, to write than type. It lets you make connections between your body and what you' re seeing and hearing, which might give the mind more footholds(立足点) for accessing a given concept(概念) or idea.
“When kids write letters, they’ re just messy,” says Sophia Vinci-Booher, an educational neuroscienti st at Vanderbilt University. As kids practice writing“A”, each form is different, and that variability(可变性) helps promote their conceptual understanding of the letter. They learn to recognize letters better when seeing variable handwritten examples, compared with similar typed examples. This helps develop areas of the brain used during reading in children and adults, Vinci-Booher found. “This could be one of the ways that early experiences actually translate to long-term life outcomes,” she says.
Abandoning handwriting could mean that those skills don't get developed as well, which could damage kids ’ ability to learn down the road. “If young children are not receiving any handwriting training, which is very good brain stimulation(刺激), then their brains simply won't reach their full potential,” says Meer,a psychologist and study co-author at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
32. What is the difference between handwriting and typing from the passage
A. Typing is better for learning concepts. B. Typing fails to involve hands movements.
C. Handwriting engages more brain areas. D. Handwriting is faster for accessing ideas.
33. What can we learn from Sophia Vinci-Booher
A. Variable handwritten letters do harm to kids’ handwriting.
B. Writing“A” promotes kids’ conceptual understanding.
C. Practicing typing helps recognize letters better.
D. Early handwriting practice benefits kids.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Advantages of handwriting over typing. B. Effects of giving up handwriting.
C. A call for improving handwriting. D. Reasons for choosing handwriting.
35. What is the author's attitude towards handwriting
A. Favorable. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.

Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home 36 Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can
keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks.
Puzzles come in a huge range of sizes and difficulty levels. For beginners, a 100-piece puzzle is usually a good starting point. 37 Try grouping pieces with the same colors or design because they will probably go in the same area once the puzzle takes shape.
38 Those pieces are easier to find because they have a straight side. Stay patient as you search through and try to make it fit together. You may not find any connecting pieces for ages but then several may suddenly appear.
For a real test, puzzles that have 1,000 pieces or more are a tough task and it's best to complete them with friends or family if you can. Choosing a scene that interests you, such as a favourite film, sport or location, can help keep you interested and determined to work to the final piece. You can get fun educational puzzles, too. 39
Some of the best places to pick up puzzles are charity shops. They’ re often on sale for less than 5. Once you have completed a puzzle, it's nice to exchange it with a friend. 40 You just upload an image, such as a family scene, and they will make a puzzle from it and post it to you. It makes lovely and unusual present.
A. So others can have a go.
B. Some companies make personalized puzzles.
C. It can get you used to sorting out how the shapes, patterns and colors go together.
D. However, a good start doesn't always lead to a good result.
E. For example, you may try a map of the world or historical timelines.
F. A good puzzle is a better choice.
G. Most people like to start by getting the four edges of a puzzle laid out.

The power of belief
“You will never walk again. You will have to use a wheelchair.” Unprepared for the doctor's judgment,I heard his words fall heavily on my ears, numbing my soul.
My serious car accident had left me unconscious and in critical condition. I awakened to find both legs: wrapped in casts(石膏). Lying in my bed motionless and relying on prayer, I wondered how I could give my ten-year-old son hope that Mom would heal. He'd been cheerful on every visit, but I saw the fear in his eyes. The thought of having a totally handicapped(残疾的) mother was weighing heavily on his little shoulder. He needed the ray of hope that I would not be in a wheelchair forever.
Just maybe, I thought, I could use this experience to teach what to do when disasters strike. I needed something besides my physical healing to sink my Irish stubbornness into—— it's that personality that kept me going through the toughest challenge of my life.
It didn’ t take me long to become impatient with the pace the doctors were willing to go with me. I determined to learn everything they showed me. I needed to make things happen my way. And being confined (限制) to a wheelchair the rest of my life didn't fit into my plans.
At first, I taught myself to move from the bed to the wheelchair. I made tiny movements for weeks, afraid of falling, but more afraid to just lie in bed. I reached a point where my arms were strong enough to carry me into the chair. Getting out of the chair and back into bed proved more difficult, but I soon developed a method of grabbing the sheets. I often wondered what the nurses and doctors would have done if they’ d seen me struggling on my own. Once sure I could return myself to the bed from the wheelchair, I began to use a walker that had been left in my room by a former hospital roommate.
