I am what one might call vertically challenged. Standing at just a few inches shy of the average height, I often find myself in situations that make me acutely aware of my lack of stature.
When I go to concerts, I have to battle through a forest of taller people just to catch a glimpse of the stage. I end up straining my neck and standing on tiptoes, only to still see mostly the backs of heads. It’s like being in a never-ending game of peek-a-boo with the performers, and I’m always on the losing end.
In crowded places like subway trains or buses, I feel like a miniature version of a human being. I get lost in asea of taller bodies, and it’s as if I’m in a world where giants roam freely. People around me seem to tower over me like skyscrapers, making me feel like a tiny ant scurrying about.
Shopping for clothes can also be a challenge. Pants are always too long, and I end up looking like I’m waiting for a flood with all that extra fabric pooling around my ankles. Shirts seem to be designed for people with longer torsos, and I often wonder if the fashion industry has completely forgotten about us short folks.
But despite all these challenges, I’ve learned to find fun in my height. I joke about being able to fit into small spaces that taller people can only dream of. I tell my friends that I’m saving on heating bills because I take up less space and need less warmth. And when someone asks me how the weather is down there, I just laugh and reply that it’s just as good as up there.
In the end, being short is just a part of who I am. It’s not something to be ashamed of, but rather something to embrace and laugh about. After all, life is too short to complain about something as trivial as height.

I’m at the salon and my hairdresser Kristi Lauren is talking rubbish. To be precise, she’s telling me exactly how much waste her salon recycles: last year it was 1.25 tonnes. Everything from hair to shampoo bottles is recycled in innovative ways. Her waste is collected by Waste Free Systems, a social enterprise.
Lauren explains the problem, “Our colour tubes are boxed, and they can have a paper ingredient list as well as the plastic cover and the metal tube. All our product bottles. Then there’s all that cut hair, and the unused colour that would normally be washed down the sink.”
Waste Free Systems charges a fee for collecting the waste, and money raised by selling recycled materials goes to charities. Lauren, who runs an eight-chair salon, says, “It’s a small price to pay. It ends up being just about $2 per client—we call it a green tax.”
Paul Frasca is the co-founder of Sustainable Salons, a similar service which now works with almost 1,000 hairdressing salons and beauty salons across Australia and New Zealand. Frasca says many salons are now using their green programs actively as a marketing strategy. “The environmentally aware consumer is now the most important customer on the market. So it doesn’t just make environmental sense.”
Both programs are researching new ways to redirect waste. Waste Free Systems is using hair to provide nutrients for plants, while Sustainable Salons makes hair products for cleaning up oil leakage. Sustainable Salons has partnered with Dresden Vision to turn plastic shampoo bottles into frames for eyeglasses. Waste Free Systems has experimented with turning plastic bottles into 3D printing material.

Melatonin, a hormone(激素) produced by the pineal gland in the brain, has been a subject of increasing interest in recent years.
Melatonin plays a crucial role in regulating the body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is like an internal clock that controls various physiological processes such as the sleep-wake cycle. During the day, when there is plenty of light, the production of melatonin is suppressed. As a result, we feel awake and active. For those who suffer from jet lag or shift -work sleep disorder, melatonin supplements (营养片剂) have shown some potential benefits. By taking melatonin supplements at the appropriate time, it’s possible to adjust the body’s internal clock more quickly and reduce the symptoms of sleep disruption. For example, a traveler flying across multiple time zones can take a small dose of melatonin to help the body adapt to the new local time and fall asleep more easily.
However, the use of melatonin supplements also has its concerns. Although melatonin is generally considered safe for short-term use, long-term use and high-dose use may lead to some side effects. Some people may experience headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, or nausea after taking melatonin. In addition, the long-term effects of melatonin on the body’s own melatonin-producing ability and overall hormonal balance are still not fully understood.
