Camel caravans crossing desert dunes, merchants trading silks and spices at bazaars (集市) — these are the images that come to mind when we think of the Silk Roads. But the reality goes far beyond this.
Rather than a single trade route from East to West, the Silk Roads were made up of overlapping networks linking communities across Asia, Africa and Europe, from East Asia to Britain, and from Scandinavia to Madagascar. This major exhibition unravels how the journeys of people, objects and ideas that formed the Silk Roads shaped cultures and histories.
The Silk Roads were in use for millennia, but this visually amazing show focuses on a defining period in their history, from about AD 500 to 1000. This time witnessed significant leaps in connectivity and the rise of universal religions that linked communities across continents.
Working with 29 national and international partners to present objects from many regions and cultures alongside those from the British Museum collection, the exhibition offers a unique chance to see objects from the length and breadth of the Silk Roads. From Tang Chinese ceramics destined for ports in the Middle East to Indian garnets found in Suffolk, they reveal the astonishing reach of these networks.
Highlight objects from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan that have never been seen in the UK before also underpin the importance of Central Asia to this continent-spanning story.
You’ll meet figures whose stories are relevant to the Silk Roads, including Willibald, a smuggler (走私犯) from England, and a legendary Chinese princess who shared the secrets of silk farming with her new kingdom. Crossing deserts, mountains, rivers and seas, the Silk Roads tell a story of connection between cultures and continents, centuries before the formation of the globalised world we know today.

Born Heinz Alfred Kissinger on May 27, 1923, Germany, Herry Kissinger was a shy, introverted and bookish child. He was not outgoing, because he was lost in his books. He and his Jewish family, fled to America in 1938. Settled in New York, he got American nationality during World War Ⅱ in 1943, and joined the U.S. Army, serving as a German interpreter from 1943-1946. He was awarded a Bronze Star in 1945.
Following his military service, Kissinger attended Harvard University and graduated in 1950, earning master’s and PhD degrees from the university in 1952 and 1954. He then joined the Harvard staff, where he worked from 1954 to 1969. Upon his election, President Richard Nixon appointed Kissinger as his national security advisor, a position held from January 20, 1969, to November 3, 1975. On September 23, 1973, Kissinger took on the dual role of secretary of state, making him the first person to hold both positions at once. He was also the first secretary of state born on foreign soil. Kissinger quickly established himself as a diplomatic heavyweight. Over this period, he tried to ease growing hostilities with the Soviet Union.
The great foreign policy trial of Kissinger’s career was the Vietnam War. By the time he became national security advisor in 1969, the Vietnam War had become enormously costly, deadly, and unpopular. Seeking to achieve “peace with honor,” Kissinger combined fighting with negotiating campaigns on North Vietnam, designed to ensure the honour of America. On January 27, 1973, Kissinger and his North Vietnamese negotiating partner, Le Duc Tho, finally signed a cease-fire agreement to end direct American involvement in the conflict. Both men were honored with the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize, though Duc declined.
In addition to ending the Vietnam War, Kissinger also accomplished a host of other foreign policy achievements. In 1971, he made two secret trips to the People’s Republic of China, paving the way for President Nixon’s historic visit in 1972 and the normalization of Chinese American relations in 1979.
Kissinger died on November 29, 2023, at his home in Connecticut. He was 100.

Driverless taxis operated by AI are gradually becoming a common sight. For instance, the Chinese city of Wuhan has seen an explosive growth of such taxis, with a peak of over 20 orders per car in a single day.
Consumers prefer it for finding themselves paying less tor the Apollo Go, the robotaxi operated by Chinese tech group Baidu, than traditional ones run by human drivers. In Wuhan, a 10-kilometer ride in a self-driving robotaxi costs between 4 and 16 yuan ($0.55-$2.22), while a regular service costs between 18 and 30 yuan ($2.48-$4.13).
Apollo Go started offering fully driverless services on open roads and received the permits to collect fees from the passengers on August 8, 2022. According to Baidu’s financial report, Apollo Go has provided over 6 million rides as of April, 2024.
The emergence of AI-driven technology is bound to reshape industries, and at the forefront are autonomous vehicles. With the gradual promotion of unmanned vehicles, many wonder: Is unmanned driving taking away the livelihood of taxi drivers Will it eventually replace drivers Millions of individuals earn their livelihoods in the transportation industry. Apart from taxi drivers, there are also long-haul (长途的) truckers and local delivery drivers. According to a McKinsey report, self-driving cars could represent as much as 15 percent of global vehicle sales by 2030. This shift will not only impact traditional driving roles but also spread across sectors linked to transportation. As humanity step into the AI era, it is crucial to ensure that this transformation is smooth, human-centered, and provides ordinary people with sufficient preparation time.
The shift from human drivers to AI in transportation is not just a technological matter but a deeply human one. While autonomous transportation offers great potential, it also presents significant challenges. It is the duty of professionals to adjust, promote, and guarantee that AI attaches importance to the well-being of humanity, and technologies are directed toward goodness, enabling AI to better serve humanity.

According to the Solar Energy Industry Association the number of solar panels installed (安装) has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
“Solar projects need to be good neighbors,” says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment (InSPIRE) project. “They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.” InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators (传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities—and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. “These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape,” says Macknick.
32.What do solar developers often ignore
A.The decline in the demand for solar energy. B.The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
C.The most recent advances in solar technology. D.The negative impact of installing solar panels.
33.What does InSPIRE aim to do
A.Make solar projects environmentally friendly. B.Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
C.Improve the productivity of local farms. D.Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
34.What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To diversify the economy. B.To restrict solar development.
C.To conserve pollinators. D.To ensure the supply of energy.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay B.Solar Farms: A New Development
C.InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture D.Solar Energy: Hope for the Future

Mathematics is often considered one of the most challenging subjects for students. Recent surveys report that 37% of teens found math to be harder than other subjects. 36
Attention difficulties
Math often involves multi-step problems, and students need to be able to perform several consecutive steps to find a solution. 37 When complex math procedures are being taught, students often lose focus and become distracted during the lesson. As a result, he or she may miss important steps in the problem-solving process, and later struggle with math on their own.
Math always builds upon previous concepts
Math is built on continuous learning. If a student didn’t fully understand a previous lesson’s concept, they are likely to struggle when newer concepts are introduced. 38 Similarly, to do algebra, students need to be comfortable with multi-step arithmetic (演算). Unfortunately, many struggling students feel hard or embarrassed asking questions in class or at school. Thus, Math concepts are not so well-mastered.
Concepts are learned, but not understood
Often students know how to perform an operation from repetition, but don’t really understand the meaning behind it. We know times-table memorization has always been a staple of elementary school curriculum. However, a student may only know that “4 x 4 = 16” because he or she memorized it, and not because they fully understand the concept of multiplication. 39
Lack of practice or patience
40 Others may not realize they need more time reviewing certain areas. Sometimes a student will feel like they understand a concept, but when attempting to do a problem themselves, they don’t know how to begin (or end up struggling through the process). Students will often feel confident after watching their teacher explain the lesson in class, only to find that doing it independently can be more challenging. Actually, it takes practice and patience to be better at it!
A.Some students don’t believe they can learn math well.
B.To reduce fractions, students need to know division first.
C.This requires staying actively focused on the task at hand.
D.The following strategies may help you one way or another.
E.Take a look at common reasons students struggle with math.
F.Thus, they cannot manage more complex and challenging problems.
G.Many students simply don’t spend enough time practicing math concepts.

A few years ago, looking to open an inspirational bookshop, a friend and I attended a booksellers’ course in New York. After a few busy days there, we were ready to get home. We left the activity centre looking to get a taxi with what felt like plenty of time to make our flight.
No sooner had we left the building than it began to rain. “A little rain never hurt anyone,” we thought. Besides, we were about to start a business of inspiring people, so we could not let a little bad weather steal our happiness. After a while with no luck finding an empty taxi, we suddenly realized, “It’s five o’clock in New York city! This is rush hour traffic. We may never get a taxi.” My friend then remembered she had saved the van (面包车) company that had driven us here from the airport several days earlier. We gave them a call. Over an hour later, our van finally arrived and took us to the airport.
A great relief came upon us when we arrived at the gate to discover the flight had been put off half an hour. Much to our disappointment, however, 20 minutes later, we discovered our flight put off again because of the bad weather in another state. Although we were tired and ready to get home, we refused to end our trip unhappily. Instead, we decided to make the most of our wait and took a nearby seat to relax and chat about our trip.
During the long wait, some annoyed passengers approached the airline employees and expressed their dissatisfaction. We were impressed with the patience with which the airline dealt with each customer’s concern. I admit, at this point, we were fighting ourselves to not let the annoyance get to us, yet somehow we managed to smile.
