Zoe Chambers was a successful PR (Public Relations) consultant(顾问)and life was going well—she

Scientists have long said getting a good night's sleep is important to your health. The U.S. National
Institute of Health says lack of sleep may even increase the risk of cognitive(认知)decline and Alzheimer's
disease. Now, an American team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be similarly linked to such
conditions.
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. The study examined
100 adults for their ability to think for an average of 4.5 years. The average age of the study subject was 75.
Eighty-eight of the group had been identified as free of cognitive damage. Twelve subjects were judged
very mildly damaged.
During the study, they were asked to complete several tests for signs of cognitive decline. The tests are
combined into a cognitive score—the higher the score, the better. They also wore electroencephalography
(EEG) devices for four to six nightsto measure their brain activity during sleep.
Overall, cognitive scores declined for those who slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per
night—as measured by EEG(脑电图). Butthe scores stayed the same forthose in the middle of the range
Dr. Brendan Lacey is the director of the Washington University Sleep Medicine Center and led the
research. He said,“Our study suggests that there is a sweet spot for total sleep time for best cognitive
performance. Short and long sleep times are associated with worse cognitive performance, perhaps due to
insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality,”Lacey added.
Greg Elder is a sleep researcher at Northumbria University in New Castle, Britain. He was surprised
about the findings that sleeping longer than 6.5 hours was linkedwith cognitive decline. Elder wrote in The
Conversation, "Each person's sleep needs are individual. If people feel rested, there is no need to change
how they sleep.”He also noted that it suggests that sleep quality may be the key, as opposed to simply total
sleep time.

When we encounter a troublesome problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm. However, clear
evidence has shown that when we create ideas together, we fail to maximize(使 最大化) collective
intelligence.
To find the hidden potential in teams, it's better to try a method called “brainwriting” You start by
asking group members to write down their thoughts independently. Next, they sit together and share them
among the group without telling who came up with each idea. Then, each member evaluates them on his or
her own, only after which do the team members come together to select and improve the most promising
options. By developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing and expanding on them, the team
can find and improve ideas that might not get attention otherwise.
An example of great brainwriting was in 2010 when 33 miners were trapped underground in Chile.
Due to the emergency of the situation, the rescue team didn't have time for brainstorming. Rather, they
established a global brainwriting system to gather individual ideas.A24-year-old engineer came up with a
tiny plastic telephone. This specialized tool ended up becoming the only means of communicating with the
miners, making it possible to save them.
Research by organizational behavior scholar Anita Woolley and her colleagues helps to explain why
this method works. They find that the key to collective intelligence is balanced involvement(参与). In
brainstorming meetings, it's too easy for participation to become one-sided in favor of the loudest voices.
The brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table and all voices are brought into
conversation. The goal isn't to be the smartest person in the room. It's to make the room smarter
Collective intelligence begins with individual creativity, but it doesn't end there. Individuals produce a
larger number and broader range of novel ideas when they work alone. That means they not only come up
with more smart ideas than groups, but also more terrible ideas. Therefore, it takes collective judgment to
find the signal in the noise and bring out the best ideas.

M: When I was twenty-five, I decided to leave England and travel to Africa. I went with my best friend, the
biologist David Attenborough. We had both spent five years at university, and we had just graduated. The plan
was simple. Since I was a writer and he was a biologist, I would write about our experiences, and he would study
the different animals we saw along the way. First, we stopped in Egypt. We visited the famous pyramids, rode
camels, and saw crocodiles in the Nile River. After that, we went to Kenya, where we had a chance to feed
giraffes from the tallest trees. Then we went to Tanzania and camped in a small village. The locals there took us to
see some rare animals. Last, we ended our trip in Madagascar. There, we saw an animal that I'd never seen before
I bet my friend $50 that it was a monkey, but after a quick Internet search, I learned I was wrong. Never make a
bet about animals with a biologist! When we arrived back home, I went to see David's publisher. I showed him
everything I had written about our journey. He said that he would publish it in the next National Geographic
magazine!
