Dr. Joseph Needham (1900-1995) was an excellent biochemist and social
activist who dedicated most of his life to the history of science and technology in
China.
He was bom in London on December 9th, 1900. He entered Cambridge
University in 1918. Soon he was attracted to the evolving modem science of
biochemistry, and received a Ph.D. in Chemical Embryology (胚胎学)in 1924. His
research on this subject was so widely acknowledged that it earned him recognition
as the ^father of chemical embryology^^.
In 1937, he met Lu Gwei-Dien, a young graduate from China, at Cambridge,
which completely changed his life. She challenged him to explore the great
contributions of ancient Chinese science and technology to the rise of modem
science. He started to study Chinese and later mastered it so well that he could easily
read classical Chinese texts.
Joseph Needham was the first Western scholar to conduct a comprehensive and
comparative (对比的)study of the history of Chinese science and technology related
to the rise of modem science. By citing many modem scientific and technological
advances that originated in ancient China, he powerfully dispelled a long-held view
in the West that China neither had science nor made any contribution to modem
science.
He, together with his many distinguished co-workers, demonstrated that China
and the Near East had made many outstanding contributions in the transformation of
ancient to modem science. His monumental work Science and Civilisation in China
has been characterized as “perhaps the greatest single act of historical synthesis (整
合)and inter-cultural communication ever attempted..
In one of his poems he describes himself as:
Having written much, whether well or ill. I know not,
But with devout (虔诚的)intention for the healing of the nations.
This intention makes his work not simply impressive but important. As a
scholar, he will always be remembered as a bridge-builder between the East and the
West.
24. What can we learn about Joseph's personal background
A. He earned a Ph.D. at the age of 37.
B. He moved to London after graduation.
C. He received high praise for his research.
D. He was devoted to studying British history.

Restricting your eating window to just 8 hours a day - a popular type of
intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食)一has been linked to a higher risk of dying from
heart disease, a new study indicates.
Time-restricted eating has previously been associated with improved health
conditions, but its long-term effects are xinclear. To learn more, Wenze Zhong at
Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and his teammates studied about 20,000
adults, roughly half men and half women, who took part in the US National Health
and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Every year from 2003 to 2018, the survey's participants self-reported dietary
(饮食的)infbrmation. The researchers matched this against death records between
2003 to 2019. Participants were only included if they were aged 20 or older and had
completed two diet questionnaires (问卷)in their first year of the survey.
Over an average fbllow-up period of eight years, the researchers found that
those who ate during an 8-hour daily window didn't live longer than those with a
more traditional eating schedule of 12 to 16 hours, despite intermittent fasting often
being praised for its benefits to longevity (长寿).The researchers also found that
people who followed an 8-hour eating schedule were 91% more likely to die from
heart disease than those who ate over 12 to 16 hours.
For people with heart conditions, eating during an 8 to 10-hour window was
linked to a 66% higher risk of death from heart disease than it was for those eating
over 12 to 16 hours. Among people with cancer, eating over a window of more than
16 hours was associated with a lower risk of death from cancer than a more
restricted eating schedule.
高三英语试题 第5页 共12页
However, the study doesn't prove that time-restricted eating caused any of
these deaths. ''Actually, unhealthy lifestyles may lead to heart disease. We also don't
know how healthy the foods people ate were J says Zhong.
28. What is the purpose ofWenze Zhong's research
A. To explore the secrets of people's longevity.
B. To study the benefits of time-restricted eating.
C. To investigate the dietary habits among people.
D. To find long-term effects of intermittent fasting.
29. How did Wenze Zhong and his team conduct the study
A. By interviewing participants of all ages.
B. By linking dietary data to death records.
C. By collecting data from different regions.
D. By reporting participants5 health conditions.
30. What did Wenze Zhong and his team find
A. Intermittent fasting can help people live longer.
B. An 8-hour eating window is best for heart health.
C. Heart patients should avoid a 16-hour eating window.
D. Longer eating windows can be good for some patients.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The limitations of the study. B. The prospect of the study.
C. The applications of the study. D, The significance of the study.

A giant dome (圆顶状物)filled with 1000 tons of CO2 could be the answer to
the growing headache for the electricity department.
Huge growth in wind and solar energy has provided a source of plentiful green
power, but during sunny, windy days across Europe, there is often more electricity
than the grid (电网)needs. Many renewable plant owners are racing to find a cheap
way to store this extra power so it can be used when energy demand peaks in the
evening, or when the wind drops and the sun doesn't shine.
An Italian company called Energy Dome has the answer: a giant gasholder filled
with CO2. When green power is plentiful, the CO2 is pumped into a compressor (压
缩机),where the gas is heated and compressed into a liquid, then kept in
carbon-steel tanks. When power is required, the liquid CO2 is run through an
evaporator (蒸发器)to turn it back into a pressurised (加压的)gas, which is reheated
and used to generate electricity.
高三英语试题 第6页 共12页
“Tbe plant can store power for 8 to 24 hours at a time/5 says Energy Dome's
Spadacini. uWhat we provide is a technology intended to be in the daily storage
market. It means to switch energy from day to night, from today to tomorrow.”
Backed by funding from the European Investment Bank, Energy Dome will
open its first commercial plant in Sardinia later this year. Energy Dome says it has
“received a lot of requests55 from other wind and solar plant developers.
However, Mark Barrett at University College London says the CO2 dome will
struggle to compete against traditional batteries for storage, partly because batteries
are already being produced at scale. uAt present, you can5t put CO2 domes into mass
production. Besides, ifs not easy to wheel a dome out of a factory/5 he says. uIf I
was betting, I wouldn't put my money on the CO2 dome.”
32. What is the growing headache for the electricity department
A. How to improve grid services.
B. How to reduce electricity bills.
C. How to store extra renewable energy.
D. How to increase power plant efficiency.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The changes of the CO2 dome.
B. The advantages of the CO2 dome.
C. The working principle of the CO2 dome.
D. The production process of the CO2 dome.
34. Which word best describes Mark Barretfs attitude to the CO2 dome
A. Favorable. B. Cautious.
C. Indifferent. D. Neutral.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. CO2 could generate electricity
B. CO2-filled dome could store power
C. Energy Dome solved the energy crisis
D. Energy Dome opened a commercial plant

Are you as good at things as you think you are How good are you at managing -clir
money Are you better than average at grammar Psychological research suggests dvic
that we're not very good at evaluating ourselves accurately. 36 This _;
phenomenon is called the Dunning-Kruger effect.
37 On average, people tend to rate themselves better than most in vi
health, leadership skills, and beyond. What's particularly interesting is that those qu
with the least ability often overrate their skills to the greatest extent.
When psychologists Dunning and Kruger first described the effect in 1999, 即
they argued that people lacking knowledge and skill in particular areas suffer a
double curse (祸根).They make mistakes and reach poor decisions. 38 In
other words, poor performers lack the knowledge needed to recognize how badly
they're doing.
The effect shows people usually do admit their weaknesses once they can spot
them. This may be why people with average knowledge or skill often have less
confidence in their abilities. 39
Meanwhile, experts tend to be aware of just how knowledgeable they are. But
they often make a different mistake: they assume that everyone else is
knowledgeable, too. 40 When they're unskilled, they can't see their own
faults. When they're extremely competent, they don't perceive how unusual their
abilities are.
So what can we do First, ask for feedback from others. Second, keep learning.
The more knowledgeable we become, the less likely we are to have invisible holes
in our competence.
A. Actually, we often overestimate our own abilities.
B. They all have incompetence they don't recognize.
C. In short, people are often caught in inaccurate self-perception.
D. They know enough to know that there's a lot they don't know.
E. This effect explains why people display imaginary superiority.
F. Knowing how competent we are is more than a self confidence boost.
G. But those knowledge gaps also prevent them from catching their errors.

My sister, Norma, has always been a hard worker, earning the title "my big girl”
from our mother, while I was always labeled "lazy Joan”. Norma began to work
part-time when she was barely twelve years old, doing weekly cleaning for an
elderly neighbor lady. But Norma didn't keep the money she earned. It went directly
to Mother to help with the household expenses.
When the final bell rang for the day, Norma would race to catch the bus to
make it to work on time while I leisurely wandered in the hallway with new friends.
As October brought fall rains and cold air down from the north, Mother kept telling
me to put on my winter coat. The coat from the previous winter was ugly. The
sleeves were too short, and since I had grown through the summer months, the waist
of the coat was nearly under my armpits (腋下).
Norma was having the same problem, with her coat being too small. Mother
kept telling me that she didn't have the money for a new coat, and I kept refusing to
wear the little girFs coat to school. I shouted; I cried; I begged. It didn't do any good.
Some of my classmates were wearing their new coats with the fashionable short
A-line style. How I envied those girls!
One day, Mother was planning our annual family Thanksgiving dinner when I
asked her the wrong question. uHow is it that you can buy all those groceries to feed
everyone but not buy me a new winter coat ”
“Young lady, it isn5t always about you and what you think you need,“ Mother
blamed and immediately sent me to my room upstairs for my selfish attitude. I
stayed in my room, feeling angry and disappointed.
At eleven o'clock that evening, Norma finally came home from work. I could
hear her excited voice in the living room below. Mother called to me, “Come down
and see what Norma has bought with her paycheck!”

Good morning, everyone.
As we know, good vision plays a crucial role in our daily life, so it's important to take
effective measures to protect our eyes.
Firstly, we should keep screens and books at a safe distance from our eyes. Secondly, ensure
proper lighting when we read and give our eyes regular breaks. Finally, more outdoor activities are
strongly recommended.
I hope we can raise our awareness of protecting our eyes and remind each other when we see
someone using eyes improperly. (80 words)

I came down and saw Norma wearing a new coat. Incredibly, it was the very coat that I had
been dreaming of, the fashionable short A-line style. Norma turned round and round happily,
showing off her new coat. Bitter tears welled up in my eyes. How I wished I had owned the same
new coat! Seeing that I was in low spirits, Norma stopped and ran into Mother's bedroom. She
then returned with a big box and handed it to me, her eyes sparkling with expectation.
I took the box from Norma and opened it. Inside was another new coat with the same style. I
looked up at Norma, confused. A big smile covering her face, she explained that she had been
saving money until it was enough for two new coats. L held the coat close, brushing it gently with
my hands. I couldn't hold back my tears. I*ve had many new coats since then, but none is as
special as the one my sister bought for me. (150 words)
