My high school experience was an exercise in frustration for everyone involved. I was in a lot of high-level classes because my test scores were superb, especially in languages. I never got less than an A on any language test-English, Spanish or French. Even a score under 95% was very rare.
However, most of my language teachers found this irritating rather than encouraging because I didn’t pay attention in class. I drew during lectures and my homework grades were far from satisfaction due to me almost never handing anything in. As an adult, I think many of them believed I had to be cheating, especially the one who refused to give me a bonus point on a test that would have raised my average score to an A for the quarter because I was not an A student on account of my study habits in her eyes.
My mom tended to force me to complete my piles of missing assignments during the last week of each quarter, so that I didn’t completely destroy my otherwise good grades. I had exactly one Spanish teacher who I was able to convince that I really was learning in class, regardless of what my pencil was doing at the moment. And it was completely by accident.
One day, she asked a general question in class. I was the only one to raise the hand to answer. I did so, and she replied in a somewhat stunned tone that I was correct. Why so surprised Because at no point in this process did I look up from the drawing I was working on with my other hand. I didn’t think she figured out that the drawing was actually helping me pay attention, but she at least realized it wasn’t damaging anything and stopped blaming me when she caught me drawing instead of taking notes.

26. How did the author’s mother treat him
A. She convinced the teacher of his genuine learning.
B. She reminded him to be concentrated in class.
C. She was indifferent to his behaviour.
D. She pushed him to finish the missing homework.
27. Which words best describe the Spanish teacher
A. Tolerant and responsible. B. Strict and humorous.

It is hard to imagine life without a smartphone these days. Leave yours home and you may find yourself lost, moneyless and severed from social contact. Nine in ten American adults own one, according to Pew Research Centre. They spend 3 hours and 45 minutes on them a day, on average, estimates GWI, a firm of analysts. New versions souped up with artificial intelligence may be even harder to put down.
Yet a market is also emerging for phones that are deliberately stupid. These dumb phones—confusingly called “feature phones”—account for just 2% of phone sales in America. But demand is growing. In 2016 HMD, a Finnish firm, bought the rights to relaunch the devices of Nokia, whose basic phones once dominated the market. It says it is now selling “tens of thousands” of flip-phones a month in America. In May it re-released the Nokia 3210, a mainstay of many millennials’ teenage years, in Europe. It even has Snake, a classic mobile game.
What explains the return of the dumb phone One factor is anxiety over the impact of smartphones-—and social-media apps in particular—on young people’s mental health. That is why Eton, a luxurious British school, announced in July that it would bar its future prime ministers from bringing smartphones to school, and would provide them with Nokia phones instead.
But plenty of grownups are also choosing dumb phones of their own accord. Jose Briones, who moderates a forum dedicated to dumb phones on Reddit, a social-media site, switched to the Light Phone after growing alarmed at his soaring screen-time record. Like many new hands, he still keeps a smartphone for situations such as travelling abroad. Other smartphone addicts are instead opting to dumb down their devices, either by deleting apps or downloading ones that control screen time, of which there are a growing number.
28. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A. People’s increasing reliance on smartphones.
B. Inconvenience of not keeping phones at hand.
C. People’s preference for new versions.
D. A growing number of smartphone addicts.
29. Paragraph 2 is written to .
A. Define and describe the functions of dumb phones.
B. Outline the history and evolution of Nokia phones.
C. Show the popularity and sales of dumb phones in Europe.
D. Illustrate the state of the present dumb phone market.
30. Why does Eton forbid its students to bring smartphones to school
A. To provide them with Nokia phones.
B. To relieve the anxiety caused by social media apps.
C. To reduce potential effect on their psychological health.
D. To make its future prime ministers concentrate more on study.
31. What can we learn from the passage
A. Global demand for dumb phones is decreasing.
B. Apps to limit phone use are gaining in popularity.
C. Nokia 3210 is reintroduced just for millennials.
D. Jose Briones needs a smartphone for forum oversight.
D
For many people, the cruelest part of daily life is the transition between wakefulness and sleep. When you should be sleeping, you want to be awake; when you should be awake, you want to stay asleep. It is easy to regard sleep as a torment: hard to attain and then hard to give up, day after day after day.
It is no fresh news to most people that adequate sleep improves well-being. One recent study of more than 30,000 U. K. residents found that people who increased their quantity of sleep over a four-year period got about the same happiness benefits as they would have from eight weeks of therapy, or from winning up to $280,000 in a lottery. Well-rested people are more social and have more positive emotional experiences with co-workers and romantic partners. Sleep insufficiency, however, lowers happiness by weakening emotional-memory recall and encouraging a scarcity mindset, pitting people against others.
If all of this seems obvious, why don’t we sleep more Physical conditions, poor sleep hygiene, work, stress, and young kids are all common barriers t proper sleep. However, another barrier comes purely from within, when we simply put off going to bed because we are doing other things that seem more important at night, but that we regret when it’s time to get up. It is what scholars call “bedtime procrastination”.
Revenge(报复)bedtime procrastination seems illogical, but the explanation is fairly straightforward. It happens when a person harbors some deep resistance to being “told” what to do in an area as personal and fundamental as when to go to bed, likely because she hates being told what to do in other parts of her life. So she fights back by exercising her own authority and staying up.
Personal control over our environment—or even the illusion of control—is deeply connected to our emotional balance. A 2019 study in the journal Emotion showed that when we perceive a loss of control over our environment, our positive emotions decline; having more control lowers negative emotions. Given that sleep is something we can directly control, we may ignore common-sense rules about getting to bed, because we are unconsciously seeking a better emotional state until the morning, when the evil alarm clock fills us with disgust and regret.
32. What does the underlined word “torment” mean
A. Consciousness. B. Suffering. C. Refreshment. D. Amusement.
33. What benefits can people get from improved sleep quality
A. Increased physical strength and endurance.
B. Improved cognitive abilities and memory recall.
C. More personal control over environment.
D. More positive emotion with people.
34. What is the inner barrier to proper sleep
A. Physical discomfort and health issues.
B. Poor management of sleep-related routines.
C. Tendency to delay bedtime due to distractions.
D. Stress and pressure from family responsibilities.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Why can’t people sleep well
B. Why can’t people sleep early
C. Why is sleep so important
D. Why can’t people get up early

Are you a social media addict Are you always checking your smartphone to see how many “likes” you’ve received for your latest post 36 Most of us check our phones an average of 150 times a day. Around 30% of the total time spent online is dedicated to social media. The occasional post on Twitter or a few minutes scrolling through our Facebook feed can be a relaxing addition to our day. 37
This is something particularly making young adults painful, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. 38 In tests, those people who check social media frequently are 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to those who spend most of their time generally surfing the Internet, who have just 1. 7 times the risk.
Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. 39 A clinical psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, “It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships and you will even feel depressed.” However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to make pre-existing issues worse than directly cause them.
40 Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.
A. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
B. But depression is a more serious condition.
C. In fact, phones are increasingly useful to us.
D. It takes a lot of self-discipline to get rid of such a bad habit.
E. Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health.
F. Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking
G. It finds the more they use social media, the more likely they are to be depressed.

The first day Mohamed went to a fine food store in his new neighborhood, he realized that he really wasn’t in Tunisia anymore. He looked up at the menu board, which had nothing but sandwiches on it, and wondered how he was going to figure out what all of these strange names meant. Mohamed decided that he would just get dessert instead and asked the woman at the counter for ice cream in a cup. She smiled broadly and disappeared behind the big glass display case to fill his order.
While Mohamed waited, he looked at the baked goods in the case. There were sixteen kinds of bagels (百吉饼) and a few different types of cookies that Mohamed didn’t recognize, but there were no pies and definitely nothing from home. Mohamed had been so excited when his parents told him they were immigrating to the United States, but now, his bravery and excitement felt a little out of place.
The woman came back to the counter with a tall paper cup. It contained a long straw and some kind of frothy (有泡沫的)drink. Mohamed, completely confused, took the cup and thanked her, considering the possibility that he had used the wrong word.
“It’s the soda you ordered,” she said, “an ice cream drink in a cup.”
He smiled at the woman again, pointed at one of the bagels, and said, “That one, too, please,” which seemed to work better.
Mohamed took the bagel and his mystery soda to a table and sat down to eat. Why was it that English had been so easy for him in his classes in Tunisia, but when it came down to actually speaking, he couldn’t even get what he wanted to eat
Later, he might find it funny that his English was so hard to figure out that he got a soda instead of the ice cream he wanted. Right now, it just felt depressing that his English was, he thought, disappointing. One mistake seemed to put everything Mohamed wanted or knew about himself impossible to reach.

第二节 范文
The next day, Mohamed made a plan to engage deeply in English. He started by watching American TV shows and listening to English music. At first, he struggled to understand the fast-paced dialogue and lyrics, but he didn’t give up. Instead, he used subtitles and lyrics websites to help him follow along. Mohamed also joined a local English language class, where he met other immigrants who were facing similar challenges. They became close friends and studied together, supporting each other through the ups and downs of learning a new language. Over time, Mohamed’s English skills improved dramatically. He was able to hold conversations with strangers, order food al restaurants, and even understand complicated lectures at school.
One day, he decided to return to the store where he had his first frustrating experience. This time, he confidently ordered a chocolate ice cream in a cup, without any mistakes. The woman at the counter smiled and handed him his dessert, and for a moment, Mohamed felt a sense of accomplishment. He realized that making mistakes was an essential part of learning and growing. And even though he had faced challenges, he had never given up. Mohamed knew that there were still many more adventures waiting for him in America. But he was ready for them, armed with his newfound confidence and skills. And as he looked out the window of the store, he felt excited about the possibilities that lay ahead.

Text 9
W: Eason, could you tell us how you got started as a living statue performer
M: Well... it is not actually something I planned to do. It was a fun job I took on while I was at university to earn a bit of extra money and when I did it actually, it turned out that I was quite good at it.
W: What do you have to do as a living statue
M: Firstly, you should come up with a creative idea and then you have to practice and find the right clothes and stuff and do the full body make-up.
W: You won the World Living Statue Championships recently. Could you tell us something about that
M: Um, for the World Championships I was a stone statue and I painted in those tiny marks so that I looked like a kind of old, almost falling apart statue, and I think the judges really appreciated that.
W: Yep, I get it. So what is the point of doing this job
M: The point really is the connection you make with your audience. When you make a tiny movement they tend to explode with laughter. And it’s that interaction between the audience and the performer that’s really what it’s all about.
W: And what is the secret of being a good living statue
M: Firstly, never try and perform on an empty stomach. If you get hungry, you can start to feel light-headed, so you always need to eat something first. Well, good stomach muscles are key, too. You need to have them to hold those positions.
Text 10
W: Here’s your new library card. It will run out one year later from today and allow you to borrow up to 15 books per month. The library is open from 9 a. m. to 7 p. m. every day except Sundays and public holidays. On the first floor, you’ll find fiction, literature, biography, travel and lifestyle books, gardening books, and cookbooks. There’s also a photocopier for public use. Copies cost twenty cents each, but I recommend you buy a monthly copier card for $ 10, which gives you 60 copies per month at a reduced price.
On the second floor, you’ll find technology, geography, science books, and children’s books. There’s a small children’s recreation area there as well, and on Saturdays, we hold a story reading morning for young kids.
The third floor has history, maps, newspapers, journals, and arts and humanities books.
We have computers with Internet access on the fourth floor. The computers are free to use, but there’s a two-hour limit. It’s first-come, first-served. Just put your name down on the list if you want to use one. If you want to use your own computer in the library, we have free wireless access as well.
That’s about it. Do you have any questions
