Sleep is a very important part of our lives. After a long day, we all like the feeling of a soft bed. We know how good it will feel in the morning after we get some rest. Sleep is also very important to animals. They also need sleep after they work hard.
Some animals sleep in the sea. Fish have no eyelids (眼睑), so they sleep with their eyes open! Sea otters (海獭) sleep in seaweed (海草) on top of the sea. The seaweed keeps the otters from moving along. Most sharks keep swimming while they sleep. Some fish find a little hole in the coral (珊瑚) and hide so they can sleep. The clown fish turns on its side to sleep at the bottom of the sea.
Some animals sleep under the ground! When it’s hot, many frogs sleep in a hole because they want to avoid the heat. Some frogs spend the whole summer in their holes. Groundhogs (土拨鼠) live in holes in the ground, so they also sleep underground. Foxes sometimes steal a groundhog’s home and use it as their own home.
What about animals that live above the ground Birds sleep in their nests or in trees. The birds’ claws (爪子) close when they sleep. This helps them stay in the tree. Bats sleep upside down for twenty hours a day!

There is almost no water in the desert (沙漠), but many animals can live in it. How do these animals get water and stay alive
Everything is hot and dry in the daytime, but the night is cold. Plants often have dew (露珠) on them in the early morning. This is because cold air can’t hold as much water as hot air. Small insects can drink the dew, and bigger animals eat the plants with the dew on them.
Some small animals get water from the bodies of insects. Bigger animals get water from the bodies of small animals. This North American bird is called a roadrunner (走鹃). It runs fast and catches small snakes, lizards and scorpions.
Some animals can wait many years for water. When the rain falls, baby shrimps (虾) come out of their eggs. They grow quickly and lay new eggs. Then the water dries up, and the shrimps die. But the new eggs do not die. They wait in the ground for the next rain. They can wait for 50 years.
Most big animals can’t live in the desert because they need a few litres (公升) of water every day. They can’t keep water in their bodies for a long time. But camels are different. They can drink 90 litres of water in ten minutes, and then drink nothing for a week.

Scientists in Australia have shown that bees seem to understand the idea of zero. This is surprising since bees have very small brains. So far, only humans and a few animals, such as monkeys and some birds, have shown that they understand zero. And humans don’t usually understand it until they’re around four years old. But bees are smarter than they look. Scientists already knew that bees could count up to four. They also knew that bees could “talk to” each other. By dancing in some ways, bees can tell other bees how far away food is and in what direction.
Scientists at RMIT University in Australia have come up with a smart way to test whether bees understood the concept (概念) of “zero”. They prepared some cards with different numbers of shapes on them. First they had to train the bees by giving them sugar water to make them choose the cards with fewer shapes on them. They put something sour (酸的) under the cards with more shapes on them. Soon the bees knew there was sugar water under the cards with fewer shapes.
After about 40 tests, the bees learned to choose the cards with different numbers of shapes. Then came the interesting part. The scientists put out a card with nothing on it—zero shape. Even though they had never seen it, the trained bees chose the blank (空白的) card. This showed that they knew that zero, or “none”, meant less than “some”.
Bees’ brains are about 86,000 times smaller than the brains of humans. How are they able to do so much with such a small brain Scientists want to study more bees to find out more. Many are now trying to create machines that can “think” like bees. By learning how the bees’ brains work, they may be able to use some of those ideas to teach computers and robots some new tricks.
66.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.Bees are smarter than monkeys. B.Most animals can count up to four.
C.Humans can understand zero since birth. D.Dancing is a form of bees’ communication.
67.What did the scientists use sugar water for
A.To train the bees to choose shapes.
B.To check if bees can tell sweet from sour.
C.To test if bees understand the meaning of numbers.
D.To encourage the bees to choose cards with fewer shapes.
68.The interesting result of the test is that ________.
A.the bees picked up the blank card B.the bees parked on the sugar water
C.the bees flew towards the sour water D.the bees chose the cards with some shapes
