It’s easy to think “that will never happen to me,” but natural disasters (灾难) are becoming both more common and serious. Millions of families face floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters every year. In Australia, for example, its wildfires from 2019 to 2020 were caused by the high temperature and a drought (干旱), taking away the lives of hundreds of people and billions (十亿) of animals.
While you can’t stop disasters from happening, you can stay safe during one if you know what to do.
Flood
Floods can happen very suddenly. Flood water can be deeper than it looks. It can carry you away, so stay away! Glass, snakes, and dirty things can be in flood water. They can make you sick, so don’t drink it even if you are thirsty.
Tornado
A tornado happens during some storms. If there’s a tornado warning, go someplace, such as a small and sturdy (结实的) bathroom, which is safe from the wind and flying things. Remember to keep away from windows or anything heavy that might fall on1 you. Get down low and cover your head with your arms.
Earthquake
You can stay safe during an earthquake by moving away from things that might fall. Get down under something that's strong if you can't rush out of the building right away. Protect your neck and head with your arm. If you're outside, go to an open space. Stay away from trees or anything that might fall over and hurt you.
Bushfire
Bushfires, also known as wildfires, are common across the world during the hotter months. It is important that you try to stay calm in a bushfire. Some fires can start so quickly that they threaten (威胁) homes and lives within minutes, so your safest choice is always to leave early. You'd better prepare an emergency survival kit and have it handy at all times.
No one wants to be caught in a dangerous and extreme situation. If the unthinkable does take place, having a plan and knowing what to do could make all the difference for you and your loved ones.

It’s said that cats are not just pets to us all these years. They are, in fact, learning from their owners and taking them as models. Scary, huh
A new study from the University of Messina shows that indoor cats who live closely to their owners copy the lives of their owners. For example, they sleep at the same time and eat at the same time. Just like a parent for a child, the same is true for a cat owner and his cat.
Many owners think their cats are as family members, so they spend much time with cats, hoping to give the best care and love for their cats. This is one of reasons the cats learn from their owner’s actions.
Another reason is that cats are clever animals with a long memory. Jane Brunt, director of the Catalyst Council, told Discovery News. “Cats watch us and notice our actions, knowing where their food is and what time to eat meals, where the washing areas are and how to open the cupboard door that’s closed.”
A new study also shows that cats understand 25—35 basic men’s words, such as food, eat, sit, no, stay, and stand. If owners train a cat to learn these words, cats will got closer to them. But in fact, cats can’t understand our ‘meows’.
So try to do better when you are in front of cats. If you spend a lot of time searching the kitchen, your cat will copy you and take food to its bowl for the night meal, too. That’s why cat owners and cats overweight rates often seem to synchronize.
Next time you reach for your kitchen, think twice. If your cat is watching, maybe she will overeat as well.

The elephant is another animal that lives in groups. An elephant herd (群) usually has from twenty to forty members. The elephants in the herd usually depend on each other for help when they are in trouble.
The leader (头领) of the group is usually a clever and strong female (雌性的). She travels at the head of the herd and is followed by the other females and their young. The male elephants follow last. When the danger comes, the male (雄性) elephants make a circle (圈) around the weaker (更虚弱的) animals and protect them. A sick elephant is not left behind to die. If an elephant is sick, the whole herd stops traveling until it gets well. When an elephant is hurt, two others walk on both sides of it and support it with their bodies. A member of the herd may be caught in a trap (陷阱). Then the others try to help it. An elephant herd is just like a human’s family.
Elephants love the young in the group and give them special care and love. For example, they help young animals stay afloat (漂浮着) when the herd crosses a river. They work together to help a baby elephant to get to the safety when it goes to a dangerous place. The way elephants love and care the youngsters is like ours.
When a female elephant gives birth to her young baby, she will go out of the herd and she usually leaves the herd for a short time. However, she takes another female along to act as an “aunt”. The aunt stands beside and helps the mother with her new-born baby. In this way, the whole herd protects its newest member.

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s completely dark. Most of us go about our business in the daytime. We hardly ever see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much.
Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there are always some types of artwork or story about an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s book, etc. So, what is it about owls that makes them so popular
Some bird researchers believe owls popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. Their eyes have developed into large ones, and they use such big eyes to see clearly in the dark. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical. So, owls cannot roll their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost entirely around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided-the left ear is a bit higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s entire face acts like a satellite dish for sound waves. Their mouths are tiny so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as mysterious (神秘的) animals. Over the centuries, lots of myths (神话) about them have been created. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some have seen them as witches. These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made these birds become more popular.

Thousands of people living in Los Angeles have been told to evacuate (疏散)because of a fast-moving wildfire that began in the early hours of Monday morning.
The Getty Fire is close to some of the city’s most expensive homes. It’s reported that wildfires are continuing to rage in many other areas. Some 3300 homes are in the evacuation area. The wildfire is putting LA’ wealthy Brentwood neighborhood in danger, and a local man told the LA Times he was thinking about which of his two cars should be left behind. “I have to decided what I am going to do with my Ferrari(法拉利),” the 47-year-old man said.

I’ll be perfectly honest: I’m not a fan of The Teen Cops. To me, it’s very much like watching a silly comedy show on television. But, let me first say that not everything in the movie is bad.
The main characters are funny and lovable. Linda is cute, Sam is funny and Mr. Timmy, the dog, is a perfect partner to the two teenage crime fighters. The producers have also come up with exciting new music.
While the characters in the movie are fine, the plot is too simple. “They look for the bad guys, they find the bad guys, and then they catch the bad guys.” Boring! No difference from so many television programmes that we have seen before.
Here’s another reason why I don’t like the plot. Two teenagers and a little dog act like they are smarter than experienced policemen and criminals. This may be a comedy, but it isn’t funny.
It seems that Director James Ma has made this comedy for people of all ages to enjoy. But, in my opinion, he has failed and it is not worth seeing.
46.What you have read is a ________.
A.review B.report C.guide D.notice
47.What kind of movie is The Teen Cops

If you’ve ever seen an alpaca (羊驼), you might just think they’re fuzzy and cute. Now, it looks like these animals might be able to help scientists find a vaccine (疫苗) for COVID-19.
Australian scientists are studying alpacas. These animals have a unique immune response (免疫反应). Scientists used to use them to do research on viruses (病毒) like HIV. Now they have found that when alpacas are infected (感染) with COVID-19, their bodies react in a special way.
“Alpacas and animals like them (such as camels) actually create two different types of antibodies (抗体). One is similar to the type we (humans) make, but they also create these things called nanobodies (纳米抗体),” said Michael James, a researcher who took part in the study.
The alpacas produced these nanobodies after researchers put a COVID-19 viral spike protein (棘突蛋白) into their bodies. It is this protein that allows COVID-19 to infect our cells (细胞). The nanobodies, however, stop infection from happening by blocking (阻隔) the protein.
You can think of our cells as “locks”— and the viral spike protein as a “key”. James said the nanobodies plug up the “lock” so that the “key” cannot get in.
Although the results look good so far, it will take some time to produce a vaccine based on the findings. The nanobodies require far more research to make sure they are both effective and safe. Since the nanobodies are new, they must be tested very strictly in a laboratory before they can be tried on humans, according to James.
51.Why are scientists studying alpacas
A.To help with research on HIV. B.To develop a vaccine for COVID-19.
C.To invent effective medicines for HIV. D.To test new medicines for COVID-19.

The Exploding Lakes of Cameroon
What comes to mind when you think of a lake You probably imagine a pretty scene with blue water, birds, and fish. For the people in the northwestern Cameroon, however, the image is very different. For them, lakes may mean terrible disasters. In 1984, poisonous gases exploded out of Lake Monoun and came down into the nearby villages, killing thirty-seven people. Two years later, Lake Nyos erupted a cloud of gases rolled down the hills and into the valleys and killed 1,700 people.
Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are crater (火山口) lakes. They were formed when water collected in the craters of old volcanoes. The volcanoes under Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are not active anymore. However, poisonous gases from the center of the earth continue to flow up through cracks in the bottom of the lake. This is normal in a crater lake. In most crater lakes, these gases are released often because the water “turns over” regularly. That is, the water from the bottom of the lake rises and mixes with the water at the top, allowing the gases to escape slowly.
However, in Lakes Nyos and Monoun, there is no regular turning over. No one knows the reason for this fact, but as a result, these lakes have more gases tapped at the bottom than other crater lakes. In fact, scientists who have studied Lakes Nyos and Monoun have found 16,000 times more gases. When a strong wind, cool weather, a storm, or a landslide (滑坡) causes the water to turn over suddenly, the gases escape in a violent explosion.
In the past, no one knew when the gases might explode, so there was no way for the villagers to escape disaster. Now scientists from the United States, France, and Cameroon have found a way to reduce the gas pressure at the bottom of Lake Nyos. They stood a 672-foot plastic pipe in the middle of the lake, with one end of the pipe near the bottom and the other end in the air. Near the top of the pipe, the team put several holes that could be opened or closed by a computer. Now, when the gas pressure gets too high, the holes are opened and some of the gas-filled water shoots up through the pipe into the air like a fountain. With less pressure, a disastrous explosion is much less likely. However, the scientists are not sure that one pipe will be enough to prevent explosions. They hope to put in others soon and they plan to install a similar pipe and a computer system at Lake Monoun as well.
To protect people nearby until all of the pipes are in place, the scientists have installed early warning systems at both lakes. If the gas pressure rises to a dangerous level, computers will set off loud sirens (警报) and bright lights to warn the people in the villages. That way, they will have time to escape from the dangerous gases.

There are desert plants which survive the dry season in the form of inactive seeds. There are also desert insects which survive as inactive larvae(幼虫). In addition, difficult as it is to believe, there are desert fish which can survive through years of drought in the form of inactive eggs. These are the shrimps(虾) that live in the Mojave Desert, an intensely dry region in the south-west of the United State where shade temperatures of over 50℃ are often recorded.
The eggs of the Mojave shrimps are the size and have the appearance of grains of sand. When sufficient spring rain falls to form a lake, once every two to five years, these eggs hatch. Then the water is soon filled with millions of tiny shrimps about a millimeter long which feed on tiny plant and animal organisms which also grow in the temporary desert lake. Within a week, the shrimps grow from their original 1 millimeter to a length of about 1.5 centimeters.
Throughout the time when the shrimps are rapidly maturing, the water in the lake equally rapidly evaporates. Therefore, for the shrimps it is a race against time. By the 12th day, however, when they are about 3 centimeters long, hundreds of tiny eggs form on the underbodies of the females. Usually by this time, all that remains of the lake is a large, muddy patch of wet soil. On the 13th day and the next, during the final hours of their brief lives, the shrimps lay their eggs in the mud. Then, having ensured that their species will survive, the shrimps die as the last of the water evaporates.
If sufficient rain falls the next year to form another lake, the eggs hatch, and once again the shrimps pass rapidly through their cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-laying, and death. Some years there is insufficient rain to form a lake; in this case, the eggs will remain dormant for another year, or even longer if necessary. Very, very occasionally, perhaps twice in a hundred years, sufficient rain falls to form a deep lake that lasts a month or more. In this case, the species passes through two cycles of growth, egg-laying, and death. Thus, on such occasions, the species multiplies considerably, which further ensures its survival.
61.Which of the following is the most distinctive feature of Mojave shrimps

B.A species must be able to multiply quickly in order to survive in the desert.
C.For some species one life cycle in a year is enough to survive the desert drought.
D.Some species develop a unique life pattern to survive in severe conditions.
64.Which of the following statements is NOT a fact
A.The eggs of Mojave shrimps are as small as the grains of seeds.
B.The whole cycle of growth of the shrimps is a race against time.
C.It is difficult to believe that these shrimps can survive droughts in the desert.
D.The amount of rain has a strong impact on the number of the shrimps.

A hunter (猎人) once lost his way deep inside the forest. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the forest, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search.
As he ate the first apple, he felt thankful for finding the tree. He thanked the forest. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less thankful while eating the second apple and even less thankful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became unhappier. He couldn’t enjoy his tenth apple at all.
Why He had already taken for granted (恩赐的) the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more. Economics (经济学) calls this diminishing marginal utility (边际效用递减), like to call it diminishing gratitude (感恩), or in simpler words, taking things for granted. Or let’s just call it the tenth apple effect.
The tenth apple did not lack (缺少) flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man’s hunger. The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the forest.

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

Scrooge and the Spirit of Christmas Present went on, invisible, into a small house where Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk, lived with his family. Bob’s family couldn’t see Scrooge and the Spirit, but Scrooge could see them clearly. In the house, Bob and his family enjoyed a wonderful Christmas dinner.
When everyone had finished eating, Bob poured a hot fruit drink into everyone’s cups. He held up his own and said, “ A merry Christmas to us all, my dears!” Everyone in the family repeated this and, “Merry Christmas, everyone!” said Tiny Tim, the last of all.

“To Mr. Scrooge!” said Bob. “A merry Christmas to Mr. Scrooge who gave us our wonderful meal.”
“Nonsense,” cried Mrs. Cratchit, with a red face. “I wish I had him here. I’d tell him what I think of him. He has given us nothing; you have worked all the hours of the day to earn the poor wage he pays you.”
Thinking about Scrooge made all the Cratchits feel unhappy. Even Tiny Tim stopped smiling. They all knew what a mean, unkind man he was. The memory of the old man did not last long, and soon, they were all happy and cheerful again.

As the novel corona-virus(新型冠状病毒)spreads throughout China and the rest of the world, an important question has yet to be answered:where did the virus come from
The latest study showed that pangolins(穿山甲)may be an intermediate(中间的)host of virus, according to Xinhua. However, some people thought bats may be the original(起初的)cause.
“We don’t know the source(来源)yet, but it’s possible that this is a bat origin corona-virus, said Peter Dazsak, president of Eco-Health Alliance, an environmental nonprofit(非营利机构)”, according to The New York Times, “When you look at the genetic sequence(基因序列)of the virus, and you match it up with every known corona-virus, the closest ones are from bats.” Dazsak also told CNN.
So why are bats the source of so many deadly kinds of viruses and why don’t they suffer from any symptoms(症状) Bats can live long and live with millions of other bats in caves, where they can spread the virus far and wide. As the only flying mammal, their body temperature is high, similar to a fever. This fact may lead to bats’ special immune system(免疫系统)in protecting them from the ill effects of viruses.
It’s surprising to notice that the virus outbreak was traced(追溯)to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan. People could buy no bats in the market. How could this be “It seems that another animal host is acting as an intermediate host between bats and humans,” said Wu Guizhen, of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Live Science.
But are bats truly to blame(责怪)for the virus or should we be blaming ourselves It’s the fault(错误)of humans for decreasing(减少)the distance between us and virus-carrying bats. Bats are an important animal in our ecosystem(生态系统)when it comes to pollinating(授粉)many fruits such as mangoes, bananas and avocados. We need to allow them to continue pollination and keep them away from our markets and mouths.
80.What can we learn about the origin of the novel corona-virus

B.Pangolins are now considered the most likely source.
C.It’s confirmed by comparing sources of several different viruses.
D.Bats have been discovered to be its original cause.
81.Why don’t bats suffer from the corona-virus

B.Bats have a special immune system.
C.Bats are the only flying mammal to live in groups.
D.Living in caves helps bats fight against viruses.
82.Which of the following is not true
A.The intermediate host spreading the virus remains unknown.
B.Bats are the only flying mammal with high body temperature.
C.It’s wrong for us humans to get close to virus-carrying bats and eat them.
D.Bats are the source of deadly kinds of viruses, so we avoid them continuing pollination.
83.What is the main point the author makes in the last paragraph
A.Virus-carrying bats should be killed. B.Humans should stay away from bats.
C.Bats benefit but also harm our ecosystem. D.Bats could spread viruses during pollination.

Because of the outbreak (疫情), many people look for fun online. Watching livestreaming (直播的) shows has become part of their lives. At the same time, traditional culture has found a bigger stage (舞台) online. Many traditional artists are starting to livestream, like Douyin and Bilibili. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some show their folk handcrafts(民间手工艺), while others perform Chinese classical music. A growing number of young people are starting to become more interested in traditional culture because of livestreaming.
Li Ju is a Peking Opera performer with the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. After the outbreak, the 59-year-old took up his smartphone and started livestreaming. Do you think of white when someone talks about a polar bear(北极熊) In fact, the polar bear does not have white fur. It just appears to be white. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them to find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer, because they are able to find their food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2-3 babies at a time. They live with their mothers until they are about two-and-a-half years old.
However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are only 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in the world. The polar bears are trying to survive today. The number of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice— polar bears mostly inhabit (居住于) the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming (全球气候变暖), pollution, hunting and so on.
Ordinary people don't care, but great people have the power and want to save tigers, fight for giant pandas and save polar bears. Ordinary people will wait, but great people will find a new world. Scientists say they have had a “conversation” with a humpback whale (座头鲸). The scientists are from the University of California, the Alaska Whale Foundation and the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute 搜寻地球外文明研究所). They teamed up and spoke to a humpback whale named Twain. They spoke to her in “humpback language” for 20 minutes. Their conversation took place after the scientists sent a “contact call” into the ocean off the coast of Alaska. Twain heard the call and responded (回应). She swam to the research boat, circled it and chatted. The SETI Institute said it was the first ever communication between humans and a humpback whale.
The scientists said their conversation with Twain was not a deep one. Professor Brenda Mc Cowan said it was more like a series of greetings. Whales use contact calls to let other whales know where they are. The scientists made the same call 36 times over a 20-minute period. Each time, Twain responded by calling back. She even matched the intervals (间隔) between each call that the researchers made, which greatly surprised the scientists.
Professor Brenda Mc Cowan told the Business Insider website that this research could make it easier to talk to aliens (外星人). She said, “There are many kinds of intelligent beings on this planet. By studying them, we can better understand what aliens might be like.” Based on this research, scientists may identify calls from space and make first contact with aliens in the future.

China and Westen countries have something different in cultures about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, we have the same idea—pigs are ugly (丑陋的), lazy and stupid (愚蠢的).
Just look at some Chinese sayings such as “Boiling a dead pig.” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig.”And in English, there are some sayings like “Eating like a pig.” and “Pigs might fly.” None of them are complimentary.
However, pigs have some good qualities (品质). They are even as smart as dogs and elephants. They have good memories. And they know whether people treat them well or not.
A UK cartoon, Peppa Pig is a most popular cartoon. The four members in the pig family teach children from all around the world about love, friendship and the value of family, And a Chinese cartoon film, the Adventures of Mcdull, is also very famous. In the cartoon, the little pig, Mcdull, has a heart of gold and always works hard for his dreams. In the town of Lampang in northern Thailand, there is an unusual group of musicians. They play many different kinds of music — from traditional Thai songs to music by Beethoven. Both children and adults love this group. What makes them so popular Is it their music Their looks Yes, it’s both of these things, but it’s also something else: they’re elephants.
These musical elephants are from the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and care for these huge, but gentle animals. And, like many zoos around the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint.
Richard Lair works with the TECC. He knew that elephants hear better than they see. So he had an idea: if elephants are intelligent and they have good hearing, maybe they can play music. To test his idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra. During a performance, the elephants play many kinds of instruments, such as the drums and the xylophone. The animals also use their voices and trunks to make sounds.
But can elephants really make music properly Yes, says Lair. They’re very creative. Humans may encourage the animals to play instruments, but the elephants make their own songs; they don’t just copy their trainers or other people. There are now CDs of the group’s music, which make money for the TECC. And the music these artists create is pretty amazing.
