Welcome to the Chinese mountain city of Dali, also sometimes known as Dalifornia, an oasis for China’s disaffected, drifting or just plain curious.
The area has long been a hub for backpackers and artists, who were attracted by its cheap rents and idyllic old town, where ancient city gates and white-walled courtyard homes point to the history of the Bai ethnic minority, who have lived there for thousands of years.
But recently, Dali has been filled with a different crop of wandering souls: young people from China’s large cities, fleeing the intense lifestyles that many of them once longed for. Worn out by the high cost of living, cut-throat competition, stressful jobs, and record youth unemployment, they have turned Dali into China’s destination of the moment.
A seemingly inescapable buzzword in Dali is healing. Healing yoga, healing camping trips, even healing coffee shops. The therapeutic atmosphere was especially thick at Veggie Ark, a complex north of the old town that houses the vegan canteen, yoga studios, gong lessons and a dye workshop. Eventually, it would also include a “self-sufficiency lab” that Tang Guanhua, 34, was building in the courtyard: a wooden dome, constructed by hand, that when completed would be powered by solar energy, and serve as an exhibition space for handicrafts made with local materials. “I wanted the lab to encourage visitors to try out more sustainable lifestyles,” said Tang.
Some of the new arrivals say they want to stay forever; others acknowledge they are looking just to try out an alternative lifestyle before returning to the city grind(苦差事). Still, even the most cynical(愤世嫉俗的)observer would admit that the city feels more open and relaxing than most other places in China.
“People here won’t deliberately try to assign you labels. You can just be yourself and be seen,” said Joey Chen, a 22-year-old freelance writer who had dropped out of college and moved to Dall a month earlier from Jiangxi province. Chen was sitting in the attic reading corner of a bookstore, devouring the Simone de Beauvoir novel All Men Are Mortal. Downstairs, the walls were decorated with photos of Franz Kafka and Che Guevara.
The question is how long Dali can remain such a harbor.
24. Which factor does NOT contribute to young people’s fleeing to Dali
A. High living expenses. B. Heavy job stress.
C. Tight job markets. D. Declining salaries.
25. What does the underlined word “therapeutic” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Silent. B. Comforting.
C. Dynamic. D. Mysterious.
26. What can we learn from the passage
A. Some visitors consider Dali as a shelter from heavy workload.
B. Dali is enthusiastic about pursuing sustainable development in tourism.
C. Dali is known as the most inclusive and comfortable place in China.
D. Visitors are likely to be defined unintentionally in Dali.
27. What might be discussed after the last paragraph
A. Recommended tourist spots in Dali.
B. Existing problems of Dali’s tourism.
C. Visitors’ impressive encounters in Dali.
D. Detailed plans for Dali’s future development.

The transportation of goods forms the basis of today’s globally distributed supply chains, and long-distance trucking is a critical link in this complex system. To meet climate goals around the world, hydrogen-based options have becomea promising strategy.
However, hydrogen has significant limitations when it comes to delivery and refueling. These roadblocks, combined with hydrogen’s convincing potential of reducing CO2 emissions, motivated a team of researchers led by William H. Green. They intended to explore a way to transport and store hydrogen using liquid organic hydrogen carriers(LOHCs), which are organic substances that can absorb and release hydrogen through chemical reactions. The team is developing a new technology that allows LOHCs to not only deliver hydrogen to the trucks but also store hydrogen onboard.
Currently, LOHCs, which work within the existing system of fuel distribution, are used to deliver hydrogen to refueling stations, where it is then processed and delivered onto trucks equipped with hydrogen fuel cells.
“The current approach causes significant energy loss at the refueling station,” says Green. “To address this, our work is exploring a more efficient application, with LOHCs-powered trucks featuring onboard dehydrogenation(脱氢).”
To carry out such a design, the team aims to adjust the truck’s powertrain(传动系统)to allow onboard hydrogen release from the LOHCs, using waste heat from the engine exhaust pipe(排气管). The dehydrogenation process happens within a high-temperature reactor, which continually receives hydrogen-rich LOHCs from the fuel storage tank. Hydrogen released from the reactor is fed to the engine. On its way to the engine, some of the hydrogen is redirected to a burner to heat the reactor, which helps increase the reactor heating.
Regardless of technical improvements, these existing options remain quite expensive due to the high cost of hydrogen delivery. “Using hydrogen is an option that is globally accessible, and could be extended to countries like the one where I’m from,” says Moreno Sader, who is from Colombia. “Since it works well with existing supporting facilities, large investments in advance are unnecessary. The global applicability is huge. There is also an enormous potential to improve delivery and refueling to further reduce the cost, and our system is working to do that,” says Sader.
28. What has kept hydrogen from being widely used
A. Its potential threat to the environment.
B. Its complex process of power generation.
C. Its restrictions on shipment and refueling.
D. Its inconvenience in production.
29. What can we know about the team’s new technology
A. It enhances trucks’ carrying capacity.
B. It is intended to carry dangerous gases.
C. It helps design a new type of transport truck.
D. It makes innovations based on present LOHCs.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly focus on
A. Added information about LOHCs.
B. Challenges of redesigning the truck’s powertrain.
C. An explanation of the onboard dehydrogenation process.
D. Advantages of using hydrogen in long-distance transportation.
31. What does Moreno Sader imply about the application of hydrogen
A. It is a double-edged sword.
B. It requires huge investments.
C. It is worth promoting worldwide.
D. It facilitates technical improvements.

Picture this: you are running late to drop your kids off at school in the morning. On top of this, it is pouring rain outside. While you are driving down the highway, another car cuts you off. You begin to think he must be a rude person who is also a terrible driver. A couple of minutes later, you, yourself accidentally cut off someone. You inform yourself your action is a result of the fact that you are late for your children’s drop-off and you cannot see well because of the rain. Why is it that we automatically assume others’ negative actions are a result of who they are as a person while giving ourselves excuses The actor- observer bias is an explanation for this confusing phenomenon.
When you explain someone’s behavior based on internal factors, like assuming the person who cuts you off is a rude person, but attribute(把……归因于)your own behavior to external situational factors, you are engaging in the actor-observer bias.
So why does the actor-observer effect occur The general explanation is that it occurs as a defense mechanism for maintaining high personal dignity. We would rather believe that our faults come from factors we cannot control because then we cannot change them and it is easier for us to accept the outcome.
The actor-observer bias is the cause of many arguments between the actor and the observer as a result of a misunderstanding of the effect of external and internal factors. How can we stop thinking this way and become more sympathetic to the people around us This is where it gets tricky because the observer’s internal attributions are an automatic process which means they occur almost immediately and unconsciously.
In order to become more sympathetic towards surrounding people in situations, we must make the attributions a controlled process. A controlled process is when the observer purposely focuses attention on something and is consciously aware of the process, unlike an automatic process. Knowing what the actor-observer effect is and how it can influence your own attributions is a good step toward becoming more sympathetic and kinder to people you interact with.
32. How would we define the other driver’s behavior according to paragraph 1
A. An emotional outburst. B. A display of bad manners.
C. A moment of carelessness. D. An unavoidable circumstance.
33. Why do we fall for the actor-observer bias
A. To safeguard our self-image.
B. To avoid arguments with others.
C. To promote sympathy towards others.
D. To ensure fairness in interpersonal interactions.
34. How might an observer be more considerate to an actor’s actions
A. By concentrating on the situational factors.
B. By making the attribution process automatic.
C. By attributing these actions to internal factors.
D. By imagining themselves in the same situations.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Why we repeat our mistakes
B. How we can stop blaming others
C. Why we always ignore our own faults
D. What is the science of being sympathetic

The game of baseball has long been woven into the fabric of American life. It is no surprise then that the baseball glove is associated with fond memories. 36 It is also an example of a product that has been perfected over time.
Originally, baseball was played without gloves because the balls were home-made and soft. Made from string covered with leather or cotton sacks stuffed with rags, the balls were easier on the hand. The late 19th century saw baseballs made by machine and standardized across the United States to be tighter and harder, and they were capable of hurting a catcher’s hands. 37 Baseball gloves were initially just leather work gloves adapted to suit the player’s needs.
38 However, the simple padded work gloves could not prevent knuckles(指关节)from bursting, fingers from splitting and bones from breaking. The solution More padding was added to the glove.
39 This design changed little until the late1930s, when an extra flap web that looked like a fishing net was added between the thumb and the fingers. This made it possible for first basemen to catch thrown balls more easily, revolutionizing the function of the glove.
During the first half of the 20th century, fielders’ gloves evolved steadily to improve their catch. Field glove designs were adapted with longer fingers, deeper pockets and larger webs between the thumb and the fingers. New designs also added lace between the fingers, making it easier for players to catch the ball. Even more significantly, a new glove design was introduced in 1957, with a special feature in the heel of the glove’s palm, which allowed the glove to completely fold around the ball. 40 This characteristic has become the standard for glove design to this day. Catchers’ and first basemen’s gloves also adopted this style.
From fingerless work gloves to flashy gloves designed for each position, the evolution of the baseball glove since the early days of professional baseball is as fascinating as the game itself. Due to technological advances, we may look forward to even newer designs for baseball gloves.
A. Behind every glove is a great glove story.
B. If a glove is well cared for, it can last decades.
C. This led to gloves being designed to soften the catch.
D. However, the baseball glove is more than an item of emotional value.
E. Thanks to this new design, fielders could easily snatch(一下夺过)the ball with only one hand.
F. Early first baseball glove designs were specialized from the padded fielders’ glove to an open glove design.
G. For example, catchers’ gloves were work gloves without fingers to allow the player to better handle the ball.

During the recent National Day holiday, the Ailao Mountains, located in Southwest China’ s Yunnan Province, became 56 unexpected sensation online.
A viral video from a content creator, who 57 (adventure)into the Ailao Mountains alone to gather materials, showcased the range’s mist-covered peaks, tranquil waters, and untamed wilderness. Attracted by the mystique, many tourists flocked to this once relatively unknown destination during the holiday. What was once a thinly 58 (populate)“forbidden zone” quickly turned into a crowded “tourist spot”.
Contrary to 59 some may think, the Ailao Mountains are a vast range instead of a single peak. 60 (stretch)about 400 kilometers, it runs through central Yunnan, forming a natural boundary between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains. While some parts have been developed into scenic areas, much of the Ailao Mountains remain untouched.
According to veteran geologist Wang Yu, the mountain’s terrain is rugged(崎岖的), with steep vertical 61 (drop)and six different climate zones. “The complex climate, which ranges from tropical to alpine, makes it easy for weather 62 (change)suddenly. Once you enter the dense forest, it’s easy to lose your way and encounter dangers like venomous snakes, leeches, and wild animals,” Wang warned.
In 2021, the dangers of the region became 63 (tragic)evident when four professional geologists from the Kunming Natural Resources Comprehensive Survey Center of China Geological Survey went missing and were later found dead in the Ailao Mountains, the youngest of 64 was 25, and the oldest 32.
While the allure of the Ailao Mountains’ wild beauty is undeniable, it’s crucial not to embark 65 such adventures without preparation!

I stood in the door of our flower shop, watching the staff work on arrangements and talk with customers. Among the employees was Emily, my25-year-old daughter. Together, my friend Colleen and I had truly created an amazing space.
I first met Colleen 15 years ago, at an event for the Chester County Down Syndrome(唐氏综合症)Interest Group, right after her daughter, Katie, was born. The group helped other families like ours navigate the life of having a child with Down Syndrome. “It’s such a challenge to help our daughters find jobs,” I said to Colleen one day. She agreed. When we learned that only 20 percent of adults with special needs have jobs that pay a typical wage, we were determined to make a difference. And not just for Emily and Katie.
In January 2021, we were approached by an organization that owned a flower shop, hoping we could use it to further our goal. It was a dream come true. We created the Kati Mac Education Foundation and reopened the shop as a nonprofit. Ten out of our 14 employees have special needs. Colleen and I spent days planning, ensuring that our shop was a learning space for our employees. We provided them with the training they needed, not just in floristry(花艺)but in essential life skills— communication, money management, and customer service. Our dream was slowly turning into reality, with Emily and Katie leading the charge.
As I watched the busy flower shop around me, I listened to the spirit-lifting playlist Emily had picked out herself. She greeted customers and answered their questions, while Katie worked with her mom to create a wonderful arrangement for a customer’s special occasion. The aroma(芳香)of roses, peonies and lilies was heavenly, but it was our employees who made the flower shop a place for angels.

第三段中的“Worn out by the high cost of living, cut-throat competition, stressful jobs, and record youth unemployment, they have turned Dali into China’s destination of the moment.(由于高昂的生活成本、激烈的竞争、紧张的工作和创纪录的青年失业率,他们已经把大理变成了中
说明大理的环境气氛是宜人的、治愈的,故选B(comforting,令人安慰的)。
26. A。 根据第五段中的“… others acknowledge they are looking just to try out an alternative lifestyle lifestyle before returning to the city grind.(……还有一些人承认,他们只是想在回到城市之前尝试一种另类的生活方式。)”可知,部分来到大理的人只是将其当做短暂逃离压力的避难所,故选A。
27. B。推理判断题。第七段中的“The question is how long Dali can remain such a harbor.(问题是大理这样的’港湾’状态还能保持多久。)”
根据第二段中的“The team … allows LOHCs to not only deliver hydrogen … store hydrogen onboard.”
根据最后一段 Moreno Sader 提到“Using hydrogen is an option that is globally accessible … applicability is huge.”
根据第一段中的“You begin to think he must be a rude person who is also a terrible driver.”
33. A。 第三段中的“it occurs as a defense mechanism for maintaining high personal dignity”解释了“行动者—观察者效应”之所以会出现的原因;“We would rather believe that our faults come from factors we cannot control because then we cannot change them and it is easier for us to accept the outcome.(我们宁愿相信我们的错误来自于我们无法控制的因素,因为这样我们便无法改变它们,更容易接受结果。)”
36. D。根据文章开头提到的“The game of baseball has long been woven into the fabric of American life. It is no surprise then that the baseball glove is associated with fond memories. (棒球运动早已融入美国人的生活。因此,棒球手套与美好的回忆联系在一起也就不足为奇了。)”以及第一段最后一句中“It is also an example of a product that has been perfected over time.”来看,D项“However, the baseball glove is more than an item of emotional value.(然而 ,棒球手套不仅仅是一件具有情感价值的物品。)”
37. C。根据“The late 19th century saw baseballs made by machine and standardized across the United States to be tighter and harder, and they were capable of hurting a catcher’s hands.(19世纪后期,棒球由机器制造,并在美国标准化,变得更紧、更硬,而且能伤到接球手的手。)” C项“This led to gloves being designed to soften the catch.”
39. F。F项“… an open glove design.”与空后句“This design changed little until the late 1930s(这种设计直到20世纪30年代末才发生了点变化)”相匹配,所以F项符合语境。
40. E。空前的句子“Even more significantly, a new glove design was introduced in 1957 …”

Dear fellow students,
My name is Li Hua. It is a great honor to be here to share our experience.
During the planning stages, with the theme “Save Food, Save the World”, our group focused on the background knowledge of World Food Day. After dividing our task, we first collected a lot of information about world hunger and food waste. Then, we designed the layout and chose some impressive pictures. Finally, we added some eye- catching slogans to call on everyone to cherish food.
It is teamwork that helped us take first place. Through this activity, we not only learned how to work together but also realized the importance of saving food. Let’s all take action to make the world a better place.
Thank you!
Suddenly, the bell above the door rang, announcing a new arrival. A woman stepped in, holding a small piece of paper in her hand. Emily approached her with a welcoming smile. “How can I help you ” she asked. The woman looked around, her eyes widening slightly, before she handed Emily the paper. It was a list of flowers. She explained that she wanted to create a bouquet for her daughter, who was graduating and moving to a new city. Touched, Emily, with her natural compassion, suggested flowers that symbolized new beginnings and good luck.
Watching them talk, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought us here. This moment proved what Colleen and I aimed for — not only to provide employment but also to cultivate an environment where our employees could make meaningful contributions, connecting with customers on a personal level. The woman left the shop with a custom bouquet, her face beaming with gratitude. Watching her leave, a sense of pride swelled within me. Our little flower shop served not just as a commercial venture but also as a guiding light for the community, symbolizing the remarkable outcomes achievable through determination and sympathy.
