As a newcomer to the United States in 2017, I quickly realized that I needed more education to live a better life in this country. “When I was young, I had so much energy and I loved building things. If I had an idea, I had to build it right now using what I could find around me,” says Danish artist Thomas Dambo. When Dambo was seven years old, he bought a mountain of cushions (垫子) from a nearby market to build a game room in his parents’ house. As a teenager, he built a “crazy” castle in his backyard.
Years later, 42-year-old Dambo is proudly showing his latest work: a giant (巨人) called Little Lui. Five meters tall, Little Lui is one of the six giants placed in the corners of Peel Region of Western Australia, which will be on show for at least a year. This work makes Dambo’s giants up to 99 around the world. His gentle giants have found homes in many different countries, as far as the United States, Belgium, China, Denmark, South Korea and now in Australia.
“For me, giants represent (代表) the voice of nature,” Dambo says. This deep respect for nature is the focus of Dambo’s building works. Dambo’s giants are made almost from local recycled wood: their faces from second-hand furniture and their hair from tree branches and leaves. Taking about 750 hours to complete, each giant is built out in nature.
“I hope by visiting the giants, people will think of rubbish as a resource. I think it’s really important that next generations are connected to nature,” Dambo says. “That’s why I tried to build the giants to attract young people. I want people to be inspired and to realize they don’t need a lot to create something big and beautiful.”

A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well. Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University, tried the service and found it amusing and uplifting. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes from popular songs. Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often associated with things happening on the Internet. “At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our heart to praise and support others, ”one member said. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), six red wolf pups (幼崽) were found in North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge last week. That’s great news for endangered red wolves, and marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2020.
Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.
In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed, which was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.14 of those wolves were caught and fed by researchers to protect them. Then, the FWS conducted a program called the Red Wolf Recovery Program. But by 1980, red wolves were believed to have been extinct in the wild.
Luckily, the wolves did well under people’s care, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the FWS began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Those wolves with tracking collars spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild. The program’s success led to many other programs aimed at bringing animals back from the edge of extinction.
Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell. the number of pups being born also began to drop. In 2020, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2021, 2022 and 2023, no wild pups were born at all.
So the news that six pups hatched in the wild this year is a huge boost. But the good news isn’t an accident.
