The life of a premature(早产的)baby born during the winter storm in Texas was saved thanks to a team of medical professionals, including a doctor and two nurses who travelled from East Austin to Marble Falls in an effort to save a newborn baby’s life.
When Arias began experiencing pains, she and her parents headed to the closest hospital, Baylor Scott & White. Arias gave birth to her daughter, Zaylynn, who weighed just over one pound and was in need of advanced special care. However, the hospital does not offer the specialized care premature babies require.
“We had five or six people out at the nurses’ station calling hospital networks all over the state of Texas,” said Meredith Schubert, the labor and delivery nurse on duty when Arias arrived. “Nobody could answer our cry for help.”
They finally reached Dr. John Loyd through a patient, division neonatologist(新生儿学专家)chief at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Around5p. m., after already having worked a full shift, Loyd packed his SUV with equipment and he and two nurses set out for Marble Falls, about55miles away. The drive took Loyd and the nurses about two hours as they drove in the night through ice and snow.
After safely arriving at the medical center in Marble Falls around 8 p. m., the Dell Children’s crew set up a temporary newborn ICU. Together, the Dell Children’s and Baylor Scott& White teams worked around the clock to care for the mother and daughter.
Once the weather cleared enough to allow for a helicopter to safely land. Zaylynn was transferred(转移)to Dell Children’s, where there is a Level IV newborn intensive care unit(重症监护室).
Schubert said, “It was a huge relief and a sense of accomplishment and joy that Zaylynn finally got to the place where she needed to be.”

Believe it or not, humans have been in debt to Earth Overshoot Day this month. Earth Overshoot Day fell on August8th. As of that day, we had used as much from nature in 2016 as our planet can provide in a whole year. In other words, we have run out of(用光)this year’s “ecological budget”, and for the rest of the year we’ll be eating into our “savings”.
Global Footprint Network has been watching Earth Overshoot Day since 1971.This year, the day came five days earlier than it did last year(Aug.13th), 11 days earlier than the year before last year(Aug.19th)and is the earliest date yet.
Global Footprint Network said that humans now use 1.6 Earths’ worth of crops, forest, livestock, energy and other resources every year. By the 2030s we will be using more than two Earths’ worth of resources every year. The situation is more and more serious and the world needs to find a better balance in how to use the Earth’s resources.
Overshoot Day is a red light warning of trouble ahead. “That is, we’ re using up what our planet does for us, so year after year, there is less for us to use,” Stuart Pimm, an American professor of ecology, explained. “Less forest, fewer fish in the ocean, and less productive land.” Two of the main causes are over-population and pollution.
Small actions make a big difference and all of us play an important role in creating a better world where we live. Even a few simple changes around our home can reduce waste, from taking a shower instead of a bath to using our own reusable bags at a store instead of ones that are made of plastics. In this way we can reduce waste and pollution. Let’s start today to live greener in no time.
28.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A.Earth Overshoot Day falls on Aug.19th.
B.Earth Overshoot Day is coming earlier and earlier.
C.Humans will have to spend more money for the rest of the year.
D.Humans have used as many resources this year as we did last year.
29.According to Global Footprint Network, which of the following is TRUE
A.By the 2030s there will be no resources left on Earth.
B.Humans use more than 1.6 Earths’ worth of resources every year.
C.Humans need to find better ways to use resources properly.
D.Aug. 13th is the earliest date of Earth Overshoot Day since 1971.
30.Which one can’t help us reduce waste
A.Taking a shower. B.Using reusable bags.
C.Taking a bath. D.Recycling waste water.
31.Which can be the best title for the passage
A.Eating up Our Planet B.Aug.8th— an Important Day
C.Small Actions Make a Big Difference D.Living a Saving Life
D
If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.
Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress. Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that
Let’s not forget about peer(同龄人)pressure. All high school students meet with it at some point in their lives. High school can be a place where students are made fun of, singled out and pointed at.
My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.
I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious. That’s exactly why I know that the focus I give to my future is important in leading me to a career that will allow me to contribute(贡献)to society.
32.What is the author’s attitude to high school students’ working part-time
A.He is against it. B.He feels proud of it.
C.He considers it worth a try. D.He thinks it does them good.
33.What does the author think of today’s adults
A.They are proud of high school students.
B.They expect too much of high school students.
C.They are more stressed than high school students.
D.They don’t fully understand high school students.
34.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Stress. B.Schoolwork. C.Part-time job. D.School life.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The roles of the youth in today’s society.
B.The stressful life of high school students.
C.The way to deal with stress in school life.
D.The differences between parents and high school students.

A few other tips
· 40 . That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
·Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.

A.Kids have to be on-line.
B.There are search engines designed just for kids.
C.Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.
D.Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things.
E.For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children.

【原文】 While in the first photo, there’s a group of children, five boys and six girls, playing football together in the park. They seem to be enjoying themselves and it seems that they won’t mind what the score will be at all. I think they benefit from this activity in several ways. First, they’re getting some exercise, which is always good for them because it’s great for their health and helps to relax. At the same time, they’re having fun together, which is important because it builds up their social relationships and their friendship. Also, it is good for boys and girls to do a bit of sports together because I think playing sports is about having fun with everyone and winning is not the only thing. In the second photo, there are four girls talking together in a cafe and laughing. They aren’t so active as the children in the first photo because they’re not doing a sport. But they are communicating more and sharing their ideas and experiences. I think they also benefit because they can talk about their problems, relax, and also enjoy their friendships. All in all, I think they get a lot from both activities.

What good is that
