Jeff Steele was born in Texas and grew up in Mississippi. A gifted singer, Jeff began writing songs when he was in high school. “I was going to be the next Lionel Richie,” he recalls with a smile. In time, however, Jeff began to write songs, and in the early 1980s formed a group called The Steeles. Within a decade, not only had the group signed a recording contract with Daywind Records, but Jeff became a staff writer for the label and moved his family to Nashville, Tennessee.
Throughout the 1990s, Jeff penned a string of hits for Daywind, including four No.1 songs for The Steeles. Not only does Jeff write for his group, but he also has his songs recorded by other artists that include Greater Vision, The Florida Boys, The Perrys, The Gaither Vocal Band and others. Jeff’s efforts have collected four BMI Awards for radio singles by Karen Peck & New River, The Inspirations, and Legacy Five, along with a popular song by The Steeles. That song also received a Dove Awards nomination (提名), as did “Not One Word” by The Collingsworth Family.
What has changed for Jeff regarding songwriting over the last three decades “I used to write everything alone, but now I enjoy co-writing, especially with my son, Brad.” The Steeles’ latest StowTown Records release, Be the Reason, contains multiple songs penned by the father and son, with each having an unusual feel. Perhaps this is because Brad–at age 30–is writing as a young man from the point of looking forward, and Jeff–at age 63–is writing from a pen of wisdom and experience. This may also be part of the reason that their songs are connecting with all of us: because we, as listeners, can benefit from both generations.
24. Who might Lionel Richie be
A. A staff writer. B. A friend of Jeff’s.
C. A well-known singer. D. A member of The Steeles.
25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A. Jeff’s essential role in his group. B. Jeff’s influence on other artists.
C. Jeff’s secret to success as a singer. D. Jeff’s extraordinary achievements.
26. What is special about Be the Reason
A. It was completed by Bra d himself. B. It shows intergenerational interaction.
C. It displays people from all walks of life. D. It received a Dove Awards nomination.
27. Which of the following can best describe Jeff
A. Talented and devoted. B. Tough and generous.
C. Academic and friendly. D. Ambitious and imaginative.

The Summer Olympics in Paris is always impressive, but 2024 promised something extraordinary even before the games began–the seats you are sitting on! Made from locally recycled plastic, these seats are sustainability champions in their own right.
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics made history in terms of sustainability, as 11,000 stadium seats made entirely of recycled plastic are used during the water sports. The plastic used for the seats was collected from recycling bins in the Seine-Saint-Denis neighborhood, and 80% of the 100 metric tons needed for the seats came from this area. The collected plastic was cut and torn into small pieces, processed and turned into new material by a local recycling firm called Le Pavé.
After the base materials are produced into plastic seats with different colors, the seats have gone through numerous tests, including mechanical resistance, fire resistance, as well as UV resistance. The recycled plastic chairs proved to be strong and durable, with producers reporting no problems in the production process.
The use of recycled plastic seats is part of Paris and France’s commitment to sustainability, with the goal of reducing downstream emissions (排放) by 50% compared to the 2012 and 2016 games. Additionally, the city is working to fight against environment worsening by making the Seine River swimmable for the first time in decades, in an effort to host the triathlon (铁人三项) there.
The recycled plastic seats not only promote sustainability but also raise awareness about waste recycling, with children being encouraged to throw their plastic bottles into appropriate bins. The Paris Olympics’ use of recycled plastic seats demonstrates the potential of a circular economy, where waste is repurposed and reused, ultimately reducing the amount of plastic waste in landfills and oceans.
28. What is special about the seats for the 2024 Paris Olympics
A. They won the championship in a competition.
B. They are made with a mix of plastic types.
C. They are made from recyclable plastic.
D. They are produced from local raw materials.
29. Where was the plastic for the seats mostly collected from
A. Recycling firms. B. Local recycling bins.
C. All over France. D. International suppliers.
30. What does the numerous tests mainly show in paragraph 3
A. The advantages of the seats.
B. The production process of the seats.
C. The difficulty of producing the seats.
D. The significance of the plastic seats.
31. What is one of the goals of using recycled plastic seats at the Paris Olympics
A. To create continued economic growth.
B. To reduce energy consumption.
C. To attract more attention to the games.
D. To contribute to environmental efforts.
D
Waves of innovation often create giants. Artificial intelligence (AI) may well be the next big technological shift, transforming the way of businesses. Firms selling the software and hardware that support AI will gain a lot of profit. But none is better positioned than Nvidia, an American firm that makes specialist AI chips. Its market value briefly passed $1,000 billion this week. Will Nvidia always be a tech-giant in this field
The hype (炒作) around AI makes the question hard to answer. Excitement about Nvidia began to mount in November, after the release of ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot. Since then many kinds of firms have launched AI products.
Nvidia is in an enviable (令人羡慕的) position. Its core business is designing high-performance chips. At first it sold these to video-game lovers. The chips were also highly efficient at training AI models, and a new, booming market emerged.
Nvidia also had the forethought to invest in two areas that helped strengthen its dominance (支配地位). One is advanced networking. Because training AI models requires vast amounts of processing power, many chips–sometimes thousands–are used at the same time. These chips exchange data along a high-performance, AI-tailored network.
Nvidia’s other strength is its software. CUDA, its AI platform, is popular with programmers and runs only on the company’s chips. For instance, by giving free access to its chips and software to some AI researchers, the firm focused on encouraging developers to use its software long before its competitors set out to woo them.
Despite all these advantages, however, Nvidia’s lasting dominance is not assured. New companies and big chipmakers want a share of Nvidia’s network and chip businesses. The biggest challenge, though, may come from Nvidia’s own customers. The cloud-computing arms of both Amazon and Alphabet are designing their own AI-tailored chips. Both have the potential to become fearsome competitors.
32. Which of the following makes Nvidia enviable according to the passage
A. The hype around artificial intelligence. B. The release of ChatGPT.
C. The availability of its chips. D. The high performance of its chips.
33. What does the underlined word “woo” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Hunt for. B. Attend to. C. Approve of. D. Guard against.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Nvidia will lose its dominance definitely. B. Nvidia should further improve its chips.
C. Alphabet has weakened Nvidia’s market. D. Amazon will defeat Nvidia soon.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A. Nvidia Leads AI’s Future. B.Nvidia Faces Challenges.
C. AI Market Flourishes Post-ChatGPT. D. Nvidia’s Value Over 100 Billion.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading (恳求的) words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to drive the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she screamed, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished (消失). Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots (揪得紧紧的).
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences of losing the phone. She could imagine her parents’ disappointed faces and strict words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and went home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence
AI has brought great changes in many aspects of our life. However, it is also a double-edged sword, which comes with both advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, super-advanced AI can help us with our daily routines, such as analyzing data, collecting information, and providing solutions to various problems. Assistance offered by AI is making it easier for us to live a better and more comfortable life. On the other hand, if misused, AI can also cause us problems concerning information and financial security. Besides, seniors and poorly educated people may be left behind by AI advancement, resulting in the decline in their quality of life.
In my opinion, we should welcome the development of AI. Meanwhile, we should keep learning and improving ourselves in case of being replaced by AI, and then live a happier life with it.
读后续写:
The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie Or could it have… ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.

W: Okay, let’s start with the reception counter. I think it should be close to the entrance if it’s far away from the entrance, it’ll be very inconvenient to the participants.
M: I agree. Shall we set the reception counter on the right side of the entrance
W: Good idea. What about the left side of the entrance
M: What about a large Christmas tree I think we’ll give our participants a very good first impression if we place it there.

M: It doesn’t happen overnight. There is always “I want, I want” in advertisements, so over time they gradually change his attitude towards food.
W: Well, what shall we do now, stop him watching TV
M: No, that won’t work. But I think we’d better tell Dick what the doctor said.

W: Haven’t decided yet Oh, you’re never going to get a flight out of here. I’m sure all the seats have been reserved by now. It’s the holiday season after all.
M: Well, it’s not such a big deal from me. My family only lives about one hundred and fifty miles away from here. I usually drive or take the train. It’s a short trip.
W: You don’t sound very excited about it.
M: Well, we’re not really a very close knit family. I have three brothers and they spread all over the place. Tom lives on the east coast and David on the west coast. I even have a brother in Montreal.
W: Oh, wow! What does he do
M: Translation work. It’s kind of strange, but we rarely get together as a family anymore.
W: Well, I try to get home as much as possible. We’re a big family, there are six of us children, so it’s always a lot of fun.

The headmaster thought that it was wrong of a boy to kiss the girl, even though they were only six years old. “It is stated clearly in the student handbook. It is unwelcome behavior.” The headmaster said.
