One possible version:
Dear chief editor,
I’m Li Hua, a freshman at our school. Interested in the position of English News Reporter for the school newspaper, I’m
writing to share a bit about myself and my qualifications.
As an outgoing and curious student with a strong passion for storytelling and writing, I have always been crazy about
the power of words and how they shape views and inform people. Besides, I enjoy reading all kinds of English books, which
develops my keen sense of language as well as enriches my vocabulary. What’s more, I took part in a regional writing
competition last year and was awarded first place for my English news report on youth volunteering.
I’m looking forward to being a part of the team that brings news and stories to life. Thank you for considering my
application.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节
One possible version:
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled under water. Unwilling to give up, I pulled the sea grass
with such great efforts that it finally broke! I swam back to the surface to take a deep breath, where I saw the two men in
canoes racing each other. Though exhausted, I shouted for help with all my might. Luckily, the two men saw me and raced
toward me. By the time they reached me, I had been already unconscious.
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I realized that
I was in hospital. Jimmy and Bobby told me the two men brought me to the shore and sent me to the hospital. After a few
minutes, my parents with half angry and half worried faces walked in. They criticized me for my running out of the house
secretly but were also glad that I was not seriously injured. Neither will I forget that terrifying experience nor show off again.

(Text 1)
M: Can I register for any course I like
W: Not exactly. There are plenty of openings in our evening program, but there are no places left in the morning or afternoon
I’m afraid.
(Text 2)
M: I’m going to go visit my parents in Brighton this weekend.
W: Really I’m going to Brighton myself. How are you getting there
M: My car broke down, so I have to go by bus or train.
W: Well, there’s plenty of room in my car!
(Text 3)
W: You know, this room needs a new paint job. Do you think you can handle it
M: Let me see what my schedule is like this weekend.
(Text 4)
M: So, what are you going to wear tonight You know you can’t get away with jeans. It’s a formal dinner party.
W: Ugh, I know and I hate wearing dresses.
M: You could just wear a skirt or something.
W: Yeah, I guess I have no choice.
(Text 5)
M: Jane’s always singing when she works.

W: Yeah, and it’s a habit that gets on everyone’s nerves.
M: I guess she thinks she has a nice voice.
W: If she thinks that then she’s the only one.

(Text 6)
M: Our new assistant starts on July 7th, but I don’t have a computer for him. I placed an order today.
W: Oh, that’s a problem. Today is already June 30th. It usually takes three weeks for orders to be filled.
M: Three weeks That won’t do.
W: Why not talk to the IT manager He might have an extra computer the assistant could use.
M: I should. But he is out at lunch right now. I’ll have to talk to him when he gets back.
(Text 7)
W: Hello, well, there’s something I need to talk to you about.
M: Oh yeah
W: I have an exam coming up and I’m studying, and ... well, the problem is there’s a lot of noise coming from your flat at
night.
M: Oh, you mean last weekend
W: Yeah, well, kind of every night. I mean last weekend but also during weekdays.
M: Really I had a party with my friends on Saturday.
W: Yeah, the thing is, I can’t study because of the noise.
M: Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize, to be honest. I can turn the music down.
(Text 8)
W: Thank you for staying at the Rattleton Suites Hotel. Here’s a copy of your bill.
M: Thank you … Oh, I believe you’ve made a mistake. I don’t think the discount was applied to my bill. When I booked, it
said that if you attend the Education Expo and stay four nights, one night is free. Everything else looks correct.
W: Oh, let me check. You checked in on March 3rd and today is the 7th. You’re right. I’m sorry about that. I’ll process
that right away. There has been something wrong with our system recently, so it didn’t apply some discounts. I’ll return
$500 to you.
M: That’s OK. Also, could you tell me where I can catch the hotel bus to the airport
W: It’s just outside the main doors here. A bus leaves every half hour. You can catch one in about ten minutes.
M: Thanks very much.

W: Good morning Mr. Wood. What’s brought you here today
M: I’ve got this terrible leg pain.
W: Would you like me to give you some painkillers before we go on
M: Yes, please.
W: Can you show me exactly where the pain is
M: I’ve been getting it right here.
W: Right. I see. And how long have you had it
M: For the past hour.
W: And when did the pain start
M: It came on when I was working out in the garden about two weeks ago. And then I got this pain. Sometimes it hurts,
sometimes it doesn’t.
W: Have you had this pain before
M: Not the pain in the leg, no. I had a pain in my left shoulder and arm when I was walking to work one morning about a
month ago, but it recovered soon.
W: OK. I’d like to ask you some questions …
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. I’m Mr. Brown and I’m the Social Organizer. It’s my job to make sure you have some fun while you’re
here! Now I’m glad to talk to you about today’s arrangements. This afternoon we’ll go together on a walking tour of the
city, exploring its sights and sounds. Then on Wednesday afternoon, we’re off to the local sports center, where you can take
part in various activities such as volleyball, basketball, gym workouts to keep yourselves fit and active! And there is also a
pool and a football field being built. On Friday afternoons, we have a Film Club — this week’s movie is Spiderman. On
Saturday we’re heading out for a day trip to Oxford, leaving here at 8:30 in the morning. Please don’t be late or we’ll leave
without you! And finally, on Sunday, we’re off to London, leaving at the same time, and you’d better arrive 10 minutes
early. If there are any other activities you’d like to do while you are here, then just ask me and I’ll see if I can help.

Many people love volcanoes, but few would love to face the extreme heat on their own. However, Kina and Martin, a
French couple, are different. Over the past few decades, they had followed volcanic eruptions, getting very close to dangerous
hot lava (岩浆) and gases, and taking their discoveries with amazing photos.
The couple met by chance at the University of Strasbourg in the 1960s, and soon they became close because of their
shared love for volcanoes. After graduating, they focused on studying volcanoes even though they didn’t have any extra
money to support their work. They traveled with limited money and a deep love for the beauty of volcanoes.
Their journey was filled with risk (风险) and excitement. To get valuable first-hand information, they put their lives in
danger by facing the heat and falling rocks, getting closer to danger than anyone else. As a result, they took close photos of
many volcanoes erupting, like the At Umari Volcano and the Cape Columbia Volcano. These wonderful photos caught the
attention of local governments, who later supported the couple with money to visit hundreds, or even thousands, of volcanoes
around the world.
In June 1991, along with 40 other people, the couple went to record the eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan. Sadly, Kina
and Martin lost their lives while researching volcanic activity to warn people in the area to evacuate. Later, it was found that
their bodies were nearest to the center of volcano.
In 2022, their story was turned into a film called Fire of Love by Sara Dosa, a prize-winning director. One viewer
commented, “I was amazed by the couple’s achievement. All of this was done before drones (无人机), which are used today
to study volcanoes, were created.”
24. What makes the French couple different from other volcano lovers
A. They were good at taking photos.
B. They were highly educated volcano experts.
C. They managed to stay safe from lava and gases.
D. They were not afraid of danger and ready to take risks.

A recent study has shown an interesting finding: more men, instead of women, are choosing to adopt (领养) adult cats.
This discovery goes against the common belief that cats are mainly loved by women, while dogs are seen as the loyal (忠诚
的) friends of men. The study shows a big difference between men and women when it comes to choosing pets to adopt. Over
the past four years, 1.5 million men have welcomed the joy of having adult cats as their family, while only 1 million women
have done so.
The strong relation between a man and his furry (毛茸茸的) friend is clear from the study’s findings. While little cats
may be cute and playful, there are good reasons why men might prefer adult cats, especially if they want a loyal and fun pet.
Unlike taking care of a little cat, which can be hard work, adult cats already have their own personalities. This means that
people can enjoy the company of a cat with clear behavior right away. Adopting an adult cat gives you company right away
without needing as much care as a little cat. This makes them a great choice for men who have busy schedules or don’t have
much time for pet training. Adult cats already know how to use the litter box and have basic feeding habits, which is perfect
for busy people.
Michael Bellingham, the head of UK Pet Food, said he was surprised by the growing number of men adopting older cats.
“This year’s research looks at how pets can have a big effect on our lives, from helping us feel less lonely to making us happier.
One-fifth of the people with mental (心理的) health problems we interviewed wanted pets to be included in prescriptions,
as they can help treat their problems.”
So, for men who are thinking about getting a furry friend, adopting an adult cat might be the best choice. It gives you a
pet that doesn’t need as much care and can also help with your mental health, making it a good deal for both the owner and
the pet.
28. What can be learned about the recent study in paragraph 1
A. Many families benefit from caring for pets.
B. Women enjoy being surrounded by cute cats.
C. Dogs have always been men’s most loyal friends.
D. Men prefer to adopt adult cats compared to women.
29. According to the study’s finding, why do men choose to adopt adult cats
A. They can cure serious diseases. B. They can take care of their owners.
C. They have fully developed personalities. D. They are cute and playful to their owners.
30. Which of the following can replace the word “prescription” in paragraph 3
A. Medical guidance. B. Job interview.
C. Personal preference. D. Travel brochure.
4

31. What’s the author’s attitude to adopting adult cats
A. Confused B. Supportive C. Doubtful D. Negative
D
Math is everywhere in our life, from working out the bill after dinner to your personal costs. While some people enjoy
solving math problems, many others are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and feel really anxious.
It might seem discouraging, but this “math anxiety” is quite common, and you’re far from being the only one who feels this
way. Besides, our worries and fears don’t always show how able we are.
The reason for this problem often begins to appear in our childhood at school. Studies have shown that math teachers
who feel nervous about teaching the subject can pass their anxiety to their students, and girls might be more affected by this
anxiety. According to the Program for International Student Assessment, around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds in 34 countries
said that they felt very nervous when solving math problems, 33% said they got nervous doing math homework, and nearly
60% worried that math classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business,
told the BBC that providing students, especially girls, with good role models “is important, especially at a young age.” She
believes the key is to have people, especially women who love teaching math, educate younger kids.
David Robson, writing for BBC Future, mentioned, “It’s unclear why math causes so much fear compared to other
subjects like geography. But knowing there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more anxious about not doing well.”
And if we believe that we’re not “math people”, we may question about ourselves and avoid solving problems that we could
deal with.
Researchers have been trying to work out why mental math can make us nervous. This fear might come from all kinds of
sources, but some suggest that openly expressing your fears can weaken their control on you and encourage children to see
math tests as challenges rather than threat (威胁). We need to have a positive view on math and give it another try.
32. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2
A. Girls are better at math than boys.
B. Math classes are difficult for everyone.
C. Students’ anxiety only comes from teachers.
D. Math anxiety in childhood affect students’ confidence.
33. What might happen if someone believes they’re not a “math person”
A. They will study math harder. B. They will doubt their abilities.
C. They will face challenges bravely. D. They won’t see math as a threat.
34. According to the last paragraph, what are children advised to do
A. Find the reasons of math fear positively.
B. Give up challenges to avoid anxiety actively.
C. Speak out their fears for improvement bravely.
D. Examine the reasons for math failure carefully.
35. What might be the best title of the passage
A. Math Anxiety: How to Fix It
B. Math Application: How to use Math
C. Math Learning: The Key to Success in All Fields.
D. Math Competition: Race between Boys and Girls.

Tips for Getting More Deep Sleep
Deep sleep is an important part that helps sleepers wake up feeling energetic. Most deep sleep happens in the first hour
or two of sleep. 36 Sleepers can follow scientific tips for healthy and deeper sleep and make simple changes on their
own.
Go to Bed on Time
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. While it may be attractive to stay up late or sleep in on weekends and
other days off, research has shown that an inconsistent (不一致的 ) sleep-wake schedule affects people’s body clock.
37 .
Relax and Manage Stress
Stress and anxiety can make sleeping difficult. Calming activities that reduce stress may help people sleep more deeply.
Relaxation exercises, deep breathing and yoga can naturally reduce anxiety and may improve sleep. 38 In addition
to relaxing activities, sleepers should try to avoid discussing or thinking about stressful topics before getting into bed.
39

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“If Mom finds out that I’m going to the beach, I’ll be in big trouble.” I thought to myself.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk in a relaxed way into the kitchen. As I was walking toward the back door,
Mom asked without looking up from her dish-washing, “Where are you going ” I answered back at once, “I am going to the
garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I let out a big sigh (长舒一口气). My plan had worked out fine so far. I climbed
the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running toward the bus stop at top speed.
After half an hour, I was at the beach looking around for my friends Jimmy and Bobby in the crowd. Some children were
running and laughing, while some were building sandcastles. In the sea water not far from the beach, a couple of young men
were racing in the canoes (独木舟), their shouts and cheers filling the air. A moment later, I found Jimmy and Bobby, who
were playing beach volleyball. I ran toward them and got into my swimming trunks (泳裤). For about an hour, we played
volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide
(潮水) came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore (岸). I wanted to show off my swimming skills,
so I offered to help get the ball for them.
I jumped into the water and started swimming at a steady (稳定的) speed. After swimming for about ten minutes, I
became tired. But when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I sped up. However, just as I was going to get
the ball, a very strong tide swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, my feet caught on some sea grass and I could
not swim properly.
I tried to keep afloat (漂浮的) but it was no use. “If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,” I
thought silently.
