Edward Tian, a 22-year-old senior at Princeton University, has built an app to detect whether text is written by ChatGPT, the viral chatbot that’s caused fears over its potential for unethical (不道德的) uses in academia. Tian, a computer science major who is minoring in journalism, spent part of his winter break creating GPTZero, which he said can quickly and efficiently figure out whether a human or ChatGPT authored an essay. His motivation to create the bot was to fight what he sees as an increase in AI plagiarism (剽窃).
To determine whether an article is written by a bot, GPTZero uses two indicators. Perplexity (困惑度) measures the complexity of text; if GPTZero is perplexed by the text, then it has high complexity and it’s more likely to be human-written. However, if the text is more familiar to the bot — because it’s been trained on such data — then it will have low complexity and therefore is more likely to be AI-generated. Besides, humans tend to write with greater burstiness, for example, with some longer or complex sentences alongside shorter ones. AI sentences tend to be more uniform.
The college senior isn’t alone in the race to fight AI plagiarism. Last month, Scott Aaronson, a researcher focusing on AI safety at OpenAI — the developer of ChatGPT, revealed that the company has been working on a way to watermark GPT-generated text with an unnoticeable secret signal to identify its source. The open-source AI community Hugging Face has put out a tool to detect whether text was created by GPT-2, an earlier version of the AI model used to make ChatGPT.
Tian is not opposed to the use of AI tools like ChatGPT. “GPTZero is not meant to be a tool to stop these technologies from being used,” he said. “But with any new technologies, we need to be able to adopt them responsibly and we need to have safeguards.”
4. What is the main purpose of Tian’s app
A. To help perfect human-written essays.
B. To monitor potential risks of chatbots.
C. To outperform the viral chatbot, ChatGPT.
D. To fight against unethical uses of AI in academia.
5. Which is a feature of human-written text according to GPTZero
A. Complexity and uniformity in sentence patterns.
B. Richness and variability of sentence structures.
C. Accuracy and precision of word choices.
D. Simplicity and clarity of language.
6. What can we say about Tian
A. He’s creative and inclusive. B. He’s tough and generous.
C. He’s reserved and disciplined. D. He is enthusiastic and ambitious
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. Restrictions on the use of AI.
B. Say no to the abuse of ChatGPT.
C. Who is the author, ChatGPT or humans
D. GPTZero — an upgrated version of ChatGPT.

In the jungles of Madagascar, lemurs (狐猴) that rarely came out of the trees before are coming out of the trees. On the banks of the Amazon, the bearded sakis (僧面猴) are swinging down from their branches to get cool. In Mexico, spider monkeys are exploring the shady forest floor.
As the world warms and as tropical forests are thinned out, a study has found the world’s primates (灵长目动物) are more likely to leave their trees - spending more time in the relative cool of the ground.
The findings involve an analysis of 47 different lemur and New World· monkey species. Over the course of 150, 000 hours of observation at 68 different sites, scientists found that among tree-living species the hotter it got the longer they spent on the ground. The same was true in more deforested areas.
The study was international cooperation among dozens of scientists, but it came about because of a few subjective observations. Dr Giuseppe Donati, from Oxford Brookes University, had noticed that the lemurs he was observing were behaving differently. “They were coming out of the forest to eat crops on the ground, which was very unusual.”
Across the world, colleagues reported similar trends. They decided to conduct a global study of the relationship between time spent on the ground and different variables.
“The idea was, if they start to spend more than a minimal part of their time on the ground, that means something has happened, and that climate change or deforestation is causing a shift,” Donati said.
Moving to spend longer on the ground can be seen as a sensible adaptation to changes in habitat. However, the scientists’ data showed that not all species were able to make the shift. In particular, those more likely to eat fruit and move in smaller packs - with fewer eyes to watch out for predators (捕食者) - suffered.
“This could be important,” Dr Timothy Eppley, from San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said. “It’s possible that spending more time on the ground may ease some primates from the effects of deforestation and climate change; however, for the less-adaptable species, effective conservation strategies will be necessary to ensure their survival.”
8. Why are tree-living species moving to the ground according to the study
A. To search for food sources. B. To deal with the loss of their habitat.
C. To seek relief from the heat. D. To escape from their predators.
9. How did the scientists draw their findings
A. By observing the animals. B. By surveying deforested areas.
C. By comparing different monkey species. D. By analyzing the changes of different sites.
10. What does Donati think of the study
A. It is globally recognized. B. It is poorly designed.
C. It calls for wider cooperation. D. It needs further checks.
11. What does the underlined word “This” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Hunting in big packs. B. The shift in eating habits.
C. Watching out for other species. D. The adaptation to the natural environment.

Six years before her husband was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease, Joy Milne detected a change in his scent (气味), which she later linked to the disease when she joined the charity Parkinson’s UK and met others with the same distinct smell. Being one of the most common age-related disorders, Parkinson’s affects an estimated seven to ten million people worldwide.
Milne, a super-smeller from Perth, Scotland, wanted to share her ability with researchers. So when Tilo Kunath, a neuroscientist who specializes in the disease, gave a talk during a Parkinson’s UK event in 2012, she raised her hand during the Q&A session and claimed she was able to smell the disease. “To be honest, initially I didn’t take her seriously,” says Kunath. “I said, ‘No, I’ve never heard of that. Next question, please.’” But months later he tried to contact her.
Once Kunath and other researchers found Milne, they tested her claim by having her smell 12 T-shirts: six that belonged to people with Parkinson’s and six from healthy individuals. Milne correctly identified 11 out of 12, but miscategorized one of the non-Parkinson’s T-shirts in the disease category. It turned out, however, she was not wrong at all — that person would be diagnosed with Parkinson’s less than a year later. Milne may not be the only person with this ability. Since her story was reported last week Kunath and his co-worker, Perdita Barran, have received e-mails from around 20 people who claimed they also have this ability.
When asked about where the smell comes from, Milne pointed to the shirt collars. Sebaceous glands (皮脂腺), which produce an oily substance called sebum, are concentrated around your neck and T-zone area — the forehead, nose and chin. So it may be sebum that causes the smell. Other studies have found that alpha-synuclein, the masses of protein that appear in the brains of those with Parkinson’s, also gather on the skin. This may also be a potential cause of the change in scent. Researchers hope that further study on what is behind the smell changes in Parkinson’s patients’ skin will lead to a new, effective diagnostic tool.
12. What did Milne think of the smell from her husband
A. It might disappear six years later.
B. It might be a sign of Parkinson’s disease.
C It might differ from other Parkinson’s patients’.
D. It might be the cause of some age-related disorders.
13. What was Kunath’s attitude to Milne’s ability at first
A. He kept silent about it. B. He considered it a trick.
C. He had little interest in it. D. He admired it very much.
14. Which of the following best describes the T-shirt test
A. Seven T-shirts belonged to healthy people.
B. Milne categorized all the T-shirts accurately.
C. It was designed to test a treatment for Parkinson’s.
D. It compared Milne with twenty other super-smellers.
15. What will Kunath and Barran most probably do next
A. Figure out the function of sebum. B. Develop drugs for Parkinson’s.
C. Try to locate alpha-synuclein. D. Find the source of the smell.

When NY state trooper (州警) Brian Hotchkiss received a missing child report from South Bristol he prepared for the worst. As a trooper for six years and even longer in law enforcement, Hotchkiss knew that missing child cases could turn out badly.
The trooper was about to follow up on an assignment on March 27 when the report came in at the office in Farmington. The case became a priority, so Hotchkiss and another trooper drove as fast as possible to South Bristol, where the 2-year-old child was reported missing from her home in County Road 33.
It was 5:18 pm when the 911 center received the call about the child who had wandered from her home. The temperature was dropping and there was little daylight left, so the responders knew they had to act fast. Hotchkiss joined a growing search team of other troopers. It was a nice day then, but the temperature was dropping, which worried Hotchkiss the most.
The group first searched in and around the house, thinking that children sometimes hide there. They didn’t find her there, so they knocked on neighbors’ doors, asking if they had seen the little girl. Hotchkiss said they got an overwhelming (强烈的) response, with many people wanting to help. The neighbors reached out to others to join in locating the child.
The sun was beginning to set but they still hadn’t found the child. Although it seemed unlikely for a young child to walk up a steep (陡峭的) hill, Hotchkiss and two other troopers decided to go up the mountain. They each took different paths. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if I didn’t check everywhere I could. I kept climbing and climbing. After about 45 minutes into the climb, I looked up to the top of the mountain and all I could see were trees and dirt,” Hotchkiss said. But there, he spotted something that didn’t belong: a “pink dot (小圆点).”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt.

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt. His heart pounded in his chest as he realized the pink dot he saw from afar might be the missing child. With renewed urgency he fastened his pace up the steep hill, his eyes locked on the tiny spot of color. As he walked closer, he found it was her — the little girl they had been searching for.
Hotchkiss quickly wrapped the freezing child in his uniform and informed the other searchers. Relief washed over him as he felt her small body warmth against him. She was scared but unharmed, her eyes wide with confusion. He radioed down to the base, his voice filled with a mix of exhaustion and excitement, “I find her, and she’s safe.” The response was immediate, a wave of cheers echoing through the communication device. Back at the base, as doctors checked the child, Hotchkiss stood aside, watching. The day that had started with fear ended with a community’s collective sigh of relief and the reminder that hope can sometimes be found in the most unlikely of places — like a pink dot on a vast, cold mountain.
