Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to people can be tough. Fortunately, sign language interpreters step in to bridge this gap.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her first language, as her parents are deaf. “I pick up sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. From a young age, Hao has been helping her parents and other deaf individuals communicate. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law company in Chongqing, assisting deaf clients in legal matters.
Since sign language has a smaller vocabulary, Hao often encounters complex legal terms that have no direct match. In such cases, she patiently breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the phrase’ put out a fire’ is signed as’ a fire put out’ in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first,” Hao explained.
Besides hand gestures, facial expressions and mouth movements are essential components of sign language. They work together to accurately communicate messages and prevent misunderstandings. To ensure clarity in legal interpretations, Hao sometimes repeats a sentence two or three times for deaf individual. “I feel stressed at work because I worry about being misunderstood,” she admitted.
Part of Hao’s anxiety comes from the fact that sign language has regional “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word’ true’,” Hao explained. She believes that patience and compassion(同情) are essential to her work. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the challenges faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.
24. What can be learned about Hao Shuxin
A. She wants to learn more sign language dialects.
B. She hopes to be a successful lawyer in Chongqing.
C. She learned sign language when she was very small.
D. She communicates with others mainly by sign language.
25. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. The vocabulary of sign language is very large.
B. Sign language and Chinese have many similarities.
C. It is not easy to express legal terms in sign language.
D. It is hard for deaf people to understand the sign language.
26. What does the underlined word “clarity” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Clearness. B. Awareness. C. Kindness. D. Gentleness.
27. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Sign language is the first language of the deaf.
B. A sign language interpreter guards the silent world.
C. Sign language plays an important role in the legal field.
D. A sign language interpreter significantly changes other people’s life.
C
As time goes by, the days of traditional vacations have made way to vacations where resting and recharging is the key. And for many, that means getting a good night’s sleep. A recent survey of 1,095 participants found that over 94 percent want to participate in slow travel in the future and are choosing quiet and rest instead of adventure.
Getting a good night’s sleep is something that escapes from many people. More than one in three Americans are not getting the minimum of seven hours of sleep that is recommended by the Center for Disease Control. “We’ve said that sleep has caused a problem in this country,” said Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist. “In fact, sleep is really a medical necessity. Fortunately, sleep tourism can benefit those people who want to catch good sleep while on vacation.”
While many hotels have provided sleep amenities(设施) like masks, light blocking shades and comfortable pillows, sleep tourism is taking it many steps further. Several hotels in the Hilton chain now offer “power down” services including dim light settings. One Hilton property, The Rome Cavalieri, offers guests pillow menus and a sleep therapy(疗法) session.
Other sleep tourism hotels include Park Hyatt New York, which offers a restorative sleep suite with a smart bed powered by artificial intelligence to adjust pressure points on the mattress(床垫), as well as sleep-related books to read to better sleep. For people who want a sleep-dedicated wellness vacation, the Six Senses chain offers guests a sleep program that includes sleep meditation, a sleep tracker, and guidance from sleep doctors.
Travelers engaging in sleep tourism can take these extra steps and seek out unique experiences and environments that help you achieve your sleep and relaxation goals. Maybe a sleep vacation is just what the doctor has ordered especially if you use the sleep techniques you learned when you return home.
28. What did Rebecca Robbins want to stress
A. The necessity of medical help. B. The benefit of sleep tourism.
C. The desire for a comfortable trip. D. The common problem in America.

China’s athletes were congratulated for their achievements and sportsmanship at the Paris Olympic Games. China finished second in the overall medal table, marking the country’s best performance at an overseas Olympic Games.
The rapid development of sports at the grass-roots level(基层水平) has laid a solid foundation for Chinese athletes’ wonderful performances on the world stage. More and more people, especially the youth, are participating in sports, expanding the talent pool for competitive sports. Besides, a modern sports industry system has been formed, supporting scientific training and the development of sports.
In 2023, there were 4.59 million gyms in China. As a result, about 38.5% of the population regularly participate in physical exercise. The country aims to raise that level to above 45% by 2035. However, despite the per capita area(人均面积) of public gyms in China reaching 2.89 square meters in 2023, a 10% increase from 2022, it has a big gap with developed countries-16 square meters in the United States and 19 square meters in Japan. Moreover, gyms managed by schools and governments, which account for over 60% of the country, are not open to the public during holidays.
The lack of gyms has become a shortcoming on the further development of mass sports in China. It is necessary for us to increase public gyms, not only by building new ones, but also by making the most of existing sports facilities. Furthermore, the development of gyms should also seek a balance in the types of sports offered. The top three public gyms in China are basketball courts, fitness trails and table tennis courts. The number of places for football, swimming, tennis, ice and snow sports is still very limited.
It is hoped that relevant departments can work together to create more space and opportunities to improve public service and guidance for people to exercise, and make the national fitness campaign a success.
32. What leads to the great performances of Chinese players
A. The support of people. B. The progress of grass-roots sports.
C. The reward of competitions. D. The quality of athletes.
33. How does the writer explain the situation of sports facilities in China in Para.3
A. By listing data. B. By doing research.
C. By asking questions. D. By analyzing causes.
34. What is a disadvantage for sports development in China in the text
A. Lack of public promotion. B. Less funds invested in sports.
C. Shortage of professional guidance. D. Imbalance in the variety of sports provided.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To improve the sports atmosphere in China.
B. To show what sports Chinese are interested in.
C. To praise the achievements of Chinese athletes.
D. To give some advice to increase the number of gyms.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As we all know, it’s easy to get yourself into trouble in life. Even if you want to move forward with your life, you may not know where to start. 36 Once you understand this, you can start taking the first few steps towards a better tomorrow.
Let go of past failures and pain.
Always thinking painful things from the past will prevent you from moving forward in the future. 37 For example, a child may burn himself by touching a hot stove and thereby learn not to touch other hot stoves, but that experience does not need to prevent that child from touching and exploring other parts of his world.
Quit running away.
Many problems are unavoidable in your life. The more time you waste on running away, the less time you have for moving forward. If there are problems between you and someone else, try talking to that person. 38
Put down the excuses.
There are often excuses that may prevent you from achieving a specific goal. 39 If you have similar excuses that hinder(阻碍) you, you must tell yourself that it must stop.
40
Be honest with yourself when identifying the fear that holds you back. Many people are troubled by the fear of the unknown. Change is a terrible thing—a thing can become better or worse. But if you handle it properly, you will benefit greatly.
A. Realize and control your fears.
B. Release the need for explanations.
C. However, you can throw them away through effort.
D. Things often happen in life without reason or sense.
E. Perhaps your relationship will become stronger after that.
F. You can learn from past mistakes so that you won’t make the same ones.
G. So you need to know which behaviors you must give up before you move forward.

During a school talent show at a senior center, a high school student and classical pianist realized that music had the power to spread joy and create community connections.
Following that performance, Grace Sun felt inspired to organize more music events for seniors in her community. To that end, at age 16, she started a school service club to organize and arrange musical events for seniors in care centers, hospitals and senior living homes. In 2023, that club became a non-profit organization called Melodies for Remedies.
“That performance really touched me, and I decided to contact that senior home and many around San Diego County area, and we started online concerts with a few close friends,” she said.
Grace wanted to uplift the elders in her community who often experience loneliness and isolation. She first gathered a group of peers and persuaded them to perform for seniors in both virtual and in-person concerts. The concerts received so much positive feedback from the appreciative seniors and residential managers that Grace decided to continue the program.
Someone then shared a study with Grace about how music therapy could potentially improve cognitive(认知的) condition of people with Alzheimer’s disease, which motivated her to include additional performances for elders dealing with cognitive decline.
The new performances would get an adjustment in programming as well. In place of their usual classical songs, the young musicians played 1960s songs. The seniors with Alzheimer’s disease happily clapped and sang along with the familiar songs as the music brought back many good memories.
“Music is a way that we can tap into their memories,” said Uriel Perez, volunteer services coordinator for the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers. “We try to bring our participants to the era they are most comfortable with, where they have most of their memories. To have music from that era brings them joy and happiness. It also brings them memories. I think that is pretty magical.”

Text 10
W: According to research studies, having high emotional intelligence or EQ can help you to succeed, particularly at work. Someone with high emotional intelligence can build strong relationships, achieve their goals and manage their emotions-key areas for success in most jobs! During your career, you will need to work in a team. A 2020 Harvard study investigated social skills and team players. They did this by grouping volunteers and giving them a variety of difficult problems. They then compared the top individual performers. Results showed two main reasons why these individuals are excellent, both related to emotional intelligence. The first reason was that they were very good at recognizing the emotional state of their teammates. The second was that they helped to improve their team’s performance through motivation. When researching links between emotion-understanding ability and risk-taking, a 2012 Yale study found emotional intelligence plays an important role in making decisions. The results showed that participants with a good emotion-understanding ability managed to keep a clearer head and were less likely to take risks. So, if you’re trying to succeed, work on your emotional intelligence and it may just make a difference!

Dear David,
I present you with a Chinese knot in the shape of a diamond. It is made of red silk threads, cloth and other materials. The Chinese knot is a kind of traditional art, showing Chinese people’s love for life and beauty. People use Chinese knots to decorate their houses or their clothes.
The reason why I choose it as a gift is that in China, it stands for friendship, love and good luck. I hope that the gift can not only bring you good luck but also remind you of our friendship and the cultural exchange.
Wish you all the best!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
