It was January in Kansas. The snowstorm hit, cutting off our power. So, though it was around noon, we were put into darkness. No television, no heat, no light. No nothing. This was back in the days when people had only radios to listen to.
Granddad Charlie gathered up his winter coat, scarf, and gloves, and disappeared into the snow. A few minutes later, he returned, with wood under his arms. Looking at my brother and me, he said, “Come on, boys. Time to build a fire.”
But the curiosity for the fire wasn't enough to keep the attention of a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy, and we were soon badgering Grandpa repeatedly as to what was next. “There's no TV, Grandpa,” I complained, “What are we going to do ”
“Let's go camping.” Grandpa answered.
We ran upstairs to get our sleeping bags, pillows, and stuffed animals back. When we returned, Grandpa had rearranged the furniture, clearing an open space in front of the fire. In short order, we had a fine campground.
“Now then,” Grandpa began, opening a strange-looking game board, “who's up for a little game of checkers ”
For the next hour or so, Grandpa taught us on the fine art of playing checkers. I became a fair player after losing four games in a row. Then, surprisingly, I beat Grandpa. When I asked him if he had let me win, he merely smiled.
Checkers was soon followed up with hangman. Afterward, Grandpa found his old, weathered guitar and sang us some campfire songs, the words to which my brother and I did not know but to which we sang along.
And right then, something terrible happened. The power came back on.

On September 7, 1930, Yuan Longping was born in Beijing. Fluent in English, his mother often read Friedrich Nietzsche's works to him. Influenced by his mother, Yuan Longping liked English, geography and chemistry at school. After graduating from university, he became a teacher in the countryside of Hunan in 1953.
With lots of crop failures, nationwide hunger hit China in the 1960s, making many people live a bad life. Yuan was sad and felt he must do something. Since the climate in Hunan was not friendly to growing wheat, he decided to devote himself to studying how to increase the production of rice, a basic food for over 60 percent of Chinese people. From then on, he began a lifelong connection with rice.
Yuan Longping succeeded in growing the world's first high production hybrid rice (杂交水稻) variety in 1973, which could reach a yield of over 500 kg per more than 200 kg than before. For the next four decades, he continued to work on the research of hybrid rice. In 2020, hybrid rice developed by his team achieved 1,500 kg per mu in two growing seasons, a new world record.
Nowadays, the hybrid rice is grown in almost half of China's rice fields and its production accounts for 60 percent of the total rice production in China. The hybrid rice production is 20 percent more than the common kinds, the yearly increase of which feeds up to 100 million people.
In 2019, Yuan Longping, known as the “Father of hybrid rice”, was awarded with Medal of the Republic, China's highest honor.

It's common that a Japanese-American bows on the phone—but only in Japanese. Behaviors and manners can become so routine that they appear even when there's no need for them. Those who are bilingual (双语的) and bicultural know first-hand that how we behave can depend on what language we are speaking. Scientists have shown that who you are in the moment can depend on the language you are using at that time.
This is because when you have an experience, the language you are using becomes associated with it. For bilingual people, this means certain memories are more closely associated with one language than the other—a phenomenon called “language-dependent memory”. For example, a childhood memory is more likely to be remembered when the language spoken during that childhood event is spoken again.
How we think and feel can thus change depending on what language we are using. For example, people who are bilingual have an intensified(增强的)stress response when listening to the words of scolding in a native language. This may be, in part, because our early memories associated with learning a “bad” word or being scolded by our parents happened in our native language.
Because emotions play a key role in how we make decisions, people are often more sensible when making choices in the less emotional foreign language. Language can even influence our decisions. When asked whether they would be willing to give one person's life to save a group, people who speak more than one language are much more likely to say “yes” when answering in a foreign language. The unpleasant feelings that can prevent us from making difficult choices are reduced when we're using a non-native language.
The language we speak has an influence on how we think, feel, and even behave. In a way, knowing different languages can provide people with a variety of views through which to see the world.
12. Why is the example of the Japanese-American mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To show Japanese people are polite. B. To show bowing is good manners.
C. To show culture affects a person greatly D. To show language affects a person's behavior.
13. Why is a “language-dependent memory” so called
A. Memories are greatly influenced by a certain language.
B. A childhood memory can be recalled in a certain language.
C. A good memory can help you learn a language well.
D. A language can determine a person's memory.
14. When can a person who is bilingual make a wise decision
A. When speaking a native language. B. When speaking a foreign language.
C. When making a random choice. D. When feeling very delighted.
15. What does the text mainly tell us
A. The language you are speaking determines your character.
B. You can be influenced by the language you are speaking.
C. A new language can bring out a new self.
D. The more languages we learn, the better future we will have.

How many times have you shrunk(缩) yourself because you fear being judged
There is a term in social psychology called the 'spotlight effect'. 16 The reality is that everyone is so concerned about their own life that they rarely spend much time thinking about ours.
I have a folder in my laptop where I keep encouraging messages for myself. I want to share one I come back to often: Don't let others stand in the way of your success. 17 These people are everywhere, and they may feel impactful in the present moment, but they will not matter soon enough as you progress in your journey. This is your life so stop letting other people decide it for you.
18 We tell ourselves “I can't do this” or “I am not good enough” or “there is too much competition”. I think it's a sign of courage and confidence to go for something that is scary, uncertain, and difficult. So, If your heart is set on doing something that you truly believe in-go for it. If it doesn't work, at least you tried. Find the strength to really believe that you belong in every room you walk into. What you have to say is just as important as anyone else in that room. Most importantly, remind yourself that confidence doesn't happen in leaps. 19 . Consciously(有意识地) do the work every day until you truly believe that you belong in every room you walk into.
Do the same for yourself as you do for others—reflect on your best qualities, celebrate your strengths, make yourself laugh, treat yourself to things, nurture your own happiness. 20 Just remember to serve yourself from time to time the same way you serve others. To truly give the world your best, you must also treat yourself as your best self.
A. They keep me grounded and focused.
B. It is slowly learned in small baby steps.
C. If you're not ready to step out, it's fine.
D. A lot of us tend to play it safe because we fear failing.
E. Your positive light helps those around you feel cared for.
F. It refers to our tendency to overestimate others' attention to us.

How important is homework According to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), it's not that important! The district has made a big change for the 2011-2012 school year. It started on July 1. Homework accounts for only 10% of a student's grade. The district, the second largest in the country, says its new way can provide a fairer assessment(评定) of students' homework and achievements.
The district hopes students only need to spend less time on homework and more time on hobbies and with their families. By reducing the weight of homework toward a student's grade, a truer picture of the student's knowledge will be shown in the achievement grade.
However, it doesn't mean the students can throw out homework. It says that homework is a chance for students to practice their skills and a tool for students to prepare for coming lessons. Still, LAUSD is joining a growing list of schools that have controlled the amount of homework.
How much time children should spend on homework is a hot topic . Harris Cooper, a professor at a university, says that the proper amount of homework time is ten minutes a day multiplied by(乘以) the student's grade. This means a third grader should spend 30 minutes a day on homework. And a sixth grader would spend 60 minutes. “Good homework in the proper amount will have better effects on them,” he said. “Bad homework or too much homework will have worse effects.”
But some people think homework is an important part of learning. They say many children just won't try their best if homework doesn't count toward their grade. Some teachers also think homework is important. They argue that students who do their homework perform better on tests and in school than those who do not. They are afraid that the new way will encourage students to pay less attention to homework.

范文(参考)
Dear Mr Jackson,
How is it going Since I entered high school, I've found that leaning English is more difficult. Stressed and worried, I am writing to seek for your help.
As the reading materials have expanded, I am constantly struggling, having trouble understanding long and complex passages quickly. What makes the things worse is that I often get confused by new vocabulary and different sentence structures. Hard as I try, I still find it hard to improve, which even makes me sleepless.
Therefore, what should I do to improve my English study I would be grateful if you could give me some advice. Looking forward to your earliest reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

(Text 1) M: Sixty-five tables are arriving before lunch.
W: I'll ask Sam and David if they'll give us a hand.
M: Good idea. They can bring in the furniture and we'll unpack it.
(Text 2) W: Excuse me, can you tell me where the English teachers are meeting
M: They were supposed to meet in the teachers' office, but they changed to the meeting room for more space. You know, it is on the second floor, next to the reading room.
(Text 3) M: The latest Transformer movie will be on tonight. Will you go with me
W: Sorry, I have no time for movies or dinner out. I'm really stressing out about the upcoming final exam.
(Text 4) W: It's terrible that there are too many breaks to show advertisements on TV.
M: But scientists say these breaks will do you good.
W: Why
M: To give your eyes a rest.
(Text 5) W: Wow. You've changed your hair. It does match your glasses. I like it.
M: Oh, thanks... and you look really well, too. You've lost weight, haven't you
W: Well, yes, a bit. I've been on a diet for about three months.
(Text 6) W: My dad said he'd drive me over to Middle High this Saturday.
M: Mine too, but the coach is right, I agree it's important that everyone stay together as a group.
W: Doesn't he think we'll get there on time
M: If everyone takes their own transportation, it's certain somebody will be late. And it's important that the whole team stay together for any last-minute instruction from the coach.
W: Besides, we can all get excited and prepared to win the big football game!
(Text 7) W: Aren't you ready yet
M: Just give me a second. I have to take this paper up to the manager's office before we leave. I'll meet you in the hall in five minutes.
W: All right. But hurry up, please. This is our first meeting with Mr. Rowe. We must arrive at his office in time. The rush hour will make it difficult to drive there, and it's too far to walk there.
M: Don't worry. We still have plenty of time. Besides, we are going to take the subway, so you don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic.
(Text 8) M: Congratulations on winning the race, Susan. Can you tell us something about yourself
W: I'm twenty-two and I'm a bus conductor. Cycling is my favorite activity.
M: Ah, bus conductor. So you're used to collecting money. Good! Tell me who taught you cycling
W: Nobody. I taught myself. I've been cycling since I was five.
M: Oh, you started at an early age. And who bought you that beautiful racing bike you have
W: I bought it myself. Actually, my parents tried to talk me out of cycling, so I had to take a part-time job to earn enough money for the bike.
M: And what are you going to do now
W: Now If you mean this minute, I'm going to have a long hot bath.
M: Well, you must need to have a rest. Again, congratulations! That was Susan James, winner of this year's London-to-Brighton Cycle Race.
(Text 9) M: Hey Linda. What's up
W: I can't spare enough money for food.
M: I had that problem when I first started here at the university. Have you thought about picking up a part-time job
W: Yeah, but I don't really want to, what with my course load, dance and yoga classes. I do work over the summer.
M: Well, do you have the University Meal Plan or the Flexi Card
W: I have the Flexi, but I only have a hundred dollars a month on it; my dad puts in fifty and I put in the other fifty from my summer savings. And, it just isn't enough.
M: Well, you could use the saving from your summer job to buy the UMP — it provides two meals a day at any cafeteria for up to six dollars each.
W: Hmm. That's a possibility.
M: Or, of course, you could cook at the dorm.
W: But I don't have a car for the groceries.
M: Use the university store — there are only a few things, but you can make some simple food.
W: I think I prefer the first choice. Thanks very much.
M: No problem.
(Text 10) M: The fear of flying has risen in the past few years. Millions of people get the news of air crash when it happens. What the media doesn't show the world is other automobile accidents. This causes many Americans to drive rather than fly, but is driving really a safer way to travel than flying Research over the past several years has shown that flying is in fact the safest method of transportation. A study in the Newsweek magazine testing deaths per 100 million miles for different forms of transportation, found that cars have 0.94 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, while trains have 0.04 deaths and planes and buses each come out the same with 0.01 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.
When you look at the data, you see that there are hundreds of automobile accidents daily across the United States, but only a small percent of these crashes involve deaths. On the other hand, there are very few aircraft crashes in the United States per year, but when there is a crash, there is usually a fairly large loss of life involved. And nearly every large plane that crashes anywhere makes the front page headline in nearly every newspaper across the world.

M: Hello, everyone. Welcome aboard the Sunshine Express. I'm the train manager and I hope you'll all enjoy the trip.
Before we leave, I'd like to tell you a bit about the train. We have an entertainment center. There are some game machines, a television and so on. If you've brought a notebook computer with you, you can also get onto the Internet here. There's also a small bar where you can get tea and coffee. For lunch and dinner, you'll use the restaurant car, which is at the front of the train. You'll have breakfast in your cars, which will be brought to you by the trainman.
The two cars behind the restaurant are where you'll find the second-class cars. Each car has seats which are changed into beds at night. You'll also find a small fold-down table. First-class passengers, your cars are at the back of the train. To get to them, you'll need to pass through the public sitting room. This can be used by everyone during the day but is available only to first-class passengers after 6 p.m. Right at the back of the train, basically as far as you can go, is my office. If anyone needs to see me, though, please use the phone in your car rather than coming to the office. Just press one and you'll get me. If I'm not there, you can tell the trainman.

Mickey Mouse is not Walt Disney's first successful cartoon creation, but it is certainly his most famous one. Supposedly, Disney took his inspiration of drawing Mickey from the field mice that used to run into his old studio in Kansas City. No one is quite sure why he dressed the mouse in the now-familiar shorts with two buttons and gave it the yellow shoes. But we do know that Disney had intended to call it Mortimer until his wife Lillian started to call it Mickey Mouse.
Disney planned Mickey's first show in the short cartoon Plane Crazy. By the 1930s Mickey's image had circled the world. It won the heart of everyone and became a superstar. Although it has received a few little changes throughout its lifetime, it has remained true to its nature since those first cartoons. Mickey is appealing because it is nice. It is both good-natured and smart.
Perhaps that was Disney's own image of himself. Why else would he have insisted on doing Mickey's voice in all the cartoons for twenty years When interviewed, he would say, "There's a lot of the mouse in me." We will address the other images later, but that mouse has continued to be one of the most recognizable symbols in American popular culture.
