A Love Charity Sale
Last Saturday witnessed a love charity sale of our school which was held at People Square at 9 am. All the students interested presented their well-prepared items.
At every stand lay a wide range of books, school supplies, sports equipment, or whatever. The whole school wandered from stand to stand, listening to the passionate owners’ introduction and choosing their favorites. Within an hour and a half, all the items were sold out. The money raised for charity was donated to the needy children in the nearby poverty-stricken area.
Not only did this sale enhance the awareness of all teachers and students to give love, it also cultivated the students’ good quality of caring for others as well as helping others.

Paragraph 1: However, without warning, my strength was running out. My legs felt like lead, each step draining the little energy left. My vision blurred, the sunlight stabbing into my eyes. I could barely keep my breath steady. Doubt clawed its way into my mind, and the finish line felt miles away. Just then, from the crowd came my Dad’s familiar encouragement. His eyes met mine, with pure faith in me, which suddenly awoke me: I couldn’t let him down! Gathering every bit of my remaining strength, I sprinted towards the finish line, only to realize that I failed to make it to the top fifteen. My heart sank as I approached my Dad.
Paragraph 2: I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” Reflecting on our countless days of tough practice together, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Surprisingly, he didn’t scold me. Instead, wrapping me into his chest and gently stroking my hair, he said, “I’m so proud of you!” Seeing my confusion, he shared with me his own story as a runner who also faced countless failures but never gave up. It suddenly dawned on me that being a true runner was more than just victory: it was in pushing forward even when it felt impossible. His words rekindled my resolution and echoed within me to push me onwards and upwards whenever challenges knocked.

A Break in Llandudno, Wales
A Victorian favourite once billed as the “Queen of Welsh resorts”, Llandudno has kept much of the charm (魅力) that made it so popular. The walking path around Llandudno Bay, the smell of fish and chips moving in the air, and old-fashioned amusements all combine to deliver a typical British seaside break. And a stay in Llandudno can be combined with a trip to Conwy, which has an impressive castle and Britain’s smallest house.
Where to eat
Dylan’s, on Llandudno’s East Parade, is set in a Grade Ⅱ-listed building and offers sea views plus a menu starring local produce. Dishes might include Welsh lamb tacos and Conwy pork. Its attached shop has a range of award-winning Welsh sauces and preserves to take home.
Where to stay
Set in a Grade I-listed 17th-century country house, Bodysgallen Hall is one of only three National Trust-owned hotels. It has views of Conwy Castle. Guests can tour the grounds with the head gardener. From 260 per night.
What we like
A half-hour drive or train ride away, the picture-perfect market town of Llanrwst has an impressive three-arched (拱形的) bridge across the River Conwy. Take a walk and drop by a wine shop and restaurant Amser Da. Highlights include Welsh cheeses and Anglesey sea salt.
Don’t miss
A 20-minute drive from Llandudno, the National Bodnant Garden has Italian-style rose terraces (梯田). The step-free Rose Walk takes in key parts of the garden, such as Waterfall Bridge and Old Mill, set against the backdrop of the Eryri foothills.
21. What can you see in Conwy

C. A queen’s residence. D. Italian-style rose terraces.
22. Which of the following highlights Dylan’s
A. A snack bar. B. Local produce. C. A kind waiter. D. Tasty seafood.

“I see you’ve got a bit of water on your coat,” said the man at the petrol station. “Is it raining out there ” “No, it’s pretty nice,” I replied, checking my sleeve. “Oh, right. A pony (马驹) bit me earlier.”
As it happened, the bite was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite you might get from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some ice cream in the car park near Haytor, and perhaps thought I’d jumped in ahead of him.
The reason why the ponies here are naughty is that Haytor is a tourist-heavy area and tourists are constantly feeding the ponies foods, despite signs asking them not to. By feeding the ponies, tourists increase the risk of them getting hit by a car, and make them harder to gather during the area’s annual pony drift (迁移).
The purpose of a pony drift is to gather them up so their health can be checked, the baby ones can be stopped from feeding on their mother’s milk, and those who’ve gone beyond their limited area can be returned to their correct area. Some of them are also later sold, in order to limit the number of ponies according to the rules set by Natural England.
Three weeks ago, I witnessed a small near-disaster a few miles west of here. While walking, I noticed a pony roll over on his back. “Hello!” I said to him, assuming he was just rolling for fun, but he was very still and, as I got closer, I saw him kicking his legs in the air and breathing heavily. I began to properly worry about him. Fortunately, I managed to get in touch with a Dartmoor’s Livestock Protection officer and send her a photo. The officer immediately sent a local farmer out to check on the pony. The pony had actually been trapped between two rocks. The farmer freed him, and he began to run happily around again.
Dartmoor has 1,000 or so ponies, who play a critical role in creating the diversity of species in this area. Many people are working hard to preserve these ponies, and trying to come up with plans to find a sustainable future for one of Dartmoor’s most financially-troubled elements.
24. Why are tourists asked not to feed the ponies
A. To protect the tourists from being bitten. B. To keep the ponies off the petrol station.
C. To avoid putting the ponies in danger. D. To prevent the ponies from fighting.
25. One of the purposes of the annual pony drift is _______.
A. to feed baby ponies on milk B. to control the number of ponies
C. to expand the habitat for ponies D. to sell the ponies at a good price
26. What was the author’s first reaction when he saw a pony roll on its back
A. He freed it from the trap . B. He called a protection officer.
C. He worried about it very much. D. He thought of it as being naughty.
27. What does the author imply about the preservation of Dartmoor’s ponies
A. It lacks people’s involvement. B. It costs a large amount of money.
C. It will affect tourism in Dartmoor. D. It has caused an imbalance of species.

Five years ago, French navy officer Jér me Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.
This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frédéric Jiguet from NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge animal tracking technology. The team members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sent the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear. Researchers believe it is most likely that signal birds would use the sound to sense storms and tsunamis. In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.
The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami. “I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system.”
28. Which of the following best explains the word “treacherous” underlined in paragraph 1
A. Strange. B. Risky. C. Unknown. D. Frequent.
29. What is the function of the tags
A. Reporting the birds’ situations. B. Distinguishing bird species.
C. Tracking natural disasters. D. Guiding researchers to islands.
30. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To explain a concept. B. To prove an assumption.
C. To present a new topic. D. To make comparisons.
31. What might be the best title for the text
A. How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters B. How Does a Warning System Function
C. Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters D. Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research
D
I get that parents worry about screen time. But speaking as a researcher studying the effects of screen-based experiences, screens can be a great tool for reading. Digital books give children unique opportunities to learn and improve skills through literacy apps. To that end, I am one of many researchers in this field who believe that digital reading should not be considered screen time in the traditional sense.
With the large number of educational technological (ed-tech) products that lack research and good design, the million-dollar question is: What makes a digital story good for children’s learning Over the past 20 years, researchers have identified specific design features and reading situations that make some digital books more educational than others. First, it’s crucial that digital books offer high-quality personalized reading experiences. With books that have AI-based text generators and a more open-ended design, children become multimedia creators, co-writers and co-illustrators of their own story universe. Second, digital books can significantly enhance the parent-child reading experience. The questions embedded (嵌入的) in digital books should model and expand what the parent might ask, and through this modeling, enhance the quality of parents’ talk around the book.
But as much as I support digital reading, the commercial turn in the development of ed-tech worries me, particularly in relation to profit-driven design and misuse of children’s data. Like some social media, subscription libraries turn kids’ attention into a commodity (商品) through automatic book recommendations. These books are often tied to advertising clicks and exhibit low literary quality in their stories. Furthermore, there’s often no content oversight, allowing anyone to become a publisher, which can lead to the creation of biased or data-gathering materials targeting children. Generative AI has expanded content creation possibilities but also raised concerns about quality. In this regard, digital books, like all ed-tech, need strict quality checks and improved collaboration between researchers and developers.
Anyway, the digital reading format has opened an exciting new research frontier. This includes using real-time data that teachers and other professionals can use to individualize how children learn to read. AI can be a good partner in supporting adults’ choice of texts, prompts and reading activities for children, provided it is trained with diverse data and valid reading models. As researchers’ calls for evidence-based children’s ed-tech are being heard by governments and funders, I hope the past two decades of e-book research can deliver the advantages of digital books to all children. Like it or not, I hope you’ll see that, at least for reading, screens can be an amazing tool to teach your child to read.
32. What is the author’s attitude towards counting digital reading as screen time
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Cautious. D. Disapproving.
33. According to the passage, digital books contribute to ______.
A. more open-ended questions B. quality parent-child interaction
C. personalized design features D. changes in kids’ reading habits
34. What are the major threats to digital reading
A. Profit-driven design and data misuse. B. The strict checks on the content.
C. The great number of advertisements. D. Low literary quality but high prices.
35. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To highlight the risks of screen time. B. To introduce some advances in ed-tech.
C. To offer another view on digital reading. D. To present the benefits of reading online.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people lead busy lives and think they barely have time to work out every day. 36 They are short workouts that often involve high-intensity exercises. Here we explore some reasons to do micro- workouts.
Require Less of a Time Commitment
Committing to exercising for a certain amount of time per week can be difficult, especially when you do not have the time or motivation to work out for an extended period. Micro-workouts are good alternatives. They take up only 10 to 30 minutes of your day. Many people spend much longer scrolling through social media each day. 37
Make Scheduling Workouts Easier
It can be challenging to commit the time needed to exercise every day, but it can also be hard to fit a workout into a tight schedule. However, a study suggests that it may be possible. 38 For example, walking your dog, using the stairs, parking farther away from a destination, or walking during your lunch break are all ways you can try.
Need No Equipment
Investing in expensive home gym equipment can be a real burden. When you decide to do micro- workouts, though, you don’t need a bunch of equipment. 39 For example, you may choose to do steps on your stairs, run on the spot, or even do some star jumps. Since you can choose what type of workout you’d prefer to do, it means that you can exercise whenever you please.
40 Now that you know all about micro-workouts, you can add them to your day. Get as creative as you please and think about the types of movements that suit you. You never know it might just boost your health and wellness.
A. Ready to get moving
B. You just fit it into your routine.
C. Fitness should be simple and convenient.
D. So it should be a relatively easy time commitment.
E. If you feel this way, you may be interested in micro-workouts.
F. Can micro-workouts give the same benefits as longer workout sessions
G. Instead, you can use things around your home to empower your workout.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal — too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd: dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched (刻印) across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching (酷热的) sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.
