Friday and Saturday were full of surprises for Chinese,as two places in China were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The first,a World Natural Heritage,is made up of a series of migratory bird sanctuaries(候鸟保护地) along the coast of the Yellow Sea in Yancheng,East China’s Jiangsu Province. The second, the Liangzhu Archaeological Site in Hangzhou,East China’s Zhejiang Province, was listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
China began the application process for the bird sanctuaries in 2017.It only took two years to successfully complete the process. The migratory bird sanctuaries are the central point of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and many endangered species, especially threatened migratory birds including red-crowned cranes and flamingos,go there to hunt for food during the migration season. The birds usually take a month to finish their migration. At about 10 days into their migration, they must stop and find food in order to have the energy to continue their journey.
Compared to the short period for the World Natural Heritage’s application, the Liangzhu application was far more challenging. The application team spent six years making their dream a reality. The site in Liangzhu is evidence of the existence of an early regional state in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the late Neolithic(新石器时代的) period in China, which helps fill in the gaps in the history of the rice-cultivating(种植) civilizations of China and East Asia more than 5,000 years ago.The site was one of the 20th century’s most important archaeological discoveries in China.
China now has 57 World Heritage Sites, ranking second in the world. The successful application means greater responsibility and duties.Protecting these places is much more important and is our future work.

It’s reported that about 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest has disappeared during the past 50 years.Deforestation is not only threatening the millions of unique plant and animal species native to the Amazon River area,it’s affecting humans worldwide. When it comes to the protection of the Amazon,it’s hard for many people to relate because they don’t feel connected to the area. There are actually a lot of direct connections,no matter how far away we are.
A connection that affects everyone on the planet is climate(气候) change.Planting new trees in the forest is basically a way of removing CO2 from the air.Rainforests have a carbon(碳) reduction nearly equal to half of what is in the air.About half of that is in the Amazon.Another case in point is a big snake called the bushmaster that lives in the Amazon.Today, millions of people use medicines made from its venom(毒液) to treat high blood pressure. So they have longer, fuller, and more productive lives.
In the 1960s,there was only one highway in the entire Amazon. That’s an area as large as the continental United States with one highway and three million people.Today, there are between 30 million to 40 million people, countless roads, and about 20 percent forests have been cut down. But on the plus side,50 years ago there were only two national parks and a national forest and a reserve in Brazil.Today, more than 50 percent of the Amazon is under some form of protection.
“There’s been a lot of damage done and forest lost, but nothing is gone until it’s gone”,noted National Geographic explorer Dr.Thomas Lovejoy.“We want to see more shared planning between the departments of transportation, energy, agriculture, and the other industries in the area.We think Amazon cities can have higher quality of life and keep people in existing cities so there’s less reason to deforest.”
5.Which can replace the underlined word “Deforestation” in paragraph 1
A.Planting more trees. B.Destroying the forests.
C.Protecting the species. D.Polluting the rivers.
6.What might the partial loss of the Amazon rainforest lead to
A.The increase of plant and animal species. B.The removal of CO2.
C.More people with high blood pressure. D.The overgrowth of the bushmaster.
7.How does paragraph 3 mainly develop
A.By making comparisons. B.By listing reasons.
C.By explaining a definition. D.By making a summary.
8.What is Dr.Thomas’ attitude towards the future of the Amazon rainforest
A.Doubtful. B.Worried. C.Uncaring. D.Positive.

In the busy and crowded Mexico City,an excellent woman has managed to build a shelter for one of nature’s most beautiful creatures—the hummingbird(蜂鸟).Meet 73-year-old Catia Lattouf,an eager bird lover who has turned her apartment into a home for these tiny, lively birds.
In a city where green spaces are not enough, and city wildlife is often pushed to the edges,Lattouf’s love for hummingbirds began in 2011,just a year after recovering from a deadly illness, when she began caring for a hummingbird that had an eye injured by another bird. She named the bird Gucci after the brand(品牌) of the eyeglasses case where she kept it and soon they became the best of friends. The tiny hummingbird rested on Lattouf’s computer screen while she worked.
“It was a good medicine for my spirit,” Lattouf said of Gucci, adding,“It gave me a new life.” Gucci was the first, but many hummingbirds came to be cared for by Lattouf.
For years Lattouf’s home had been a bird shelter, but she was concerned about whether she would be able to meet the requirements of hummingbirds. However, since then,Lattouf has worked to make the public realize the importance of hummingbirds and has saved and freed hundreds of them.
Hummingbirds are an important part of the American food web. They help control the population of insects.Although they’re small in size, their diet includes the mosquitoes, spiders and fruit flies.Hummingbirds also pollinate(授粉) a wide variety of flowering plants from Alaska to the southernmost point of South America, which is especially important for native plant species. In fact, some plants depend almost completely on hummingbirds for pollination.
Through her effort,Lattouf has shown that even in the heart of a big city,it is possible to coexist with and protect the natural world. In a city that can sometimes feel disconnected from nature,Lattouf’s apartment is a wonder that can be found when we make space for the wild in our everyday lives.
1.Where did the bird’s name come from
A.The shape of the eyeglasses case. B.The place where Lattouf put it.
C.The park where Lattouf found it. D.The picture on Lattouf’s computer screen.
2.What can we learn about Gucci
A.It was hard to care for. B.It nearly died of its serious injury.
C.It brought some trouble to Lattouf’s work. D.It benefited Lattouf’s health greatly.
3.What does Lattouf keep doing
A.Making good use of hummingbirds.
B.Protecting hummingbirds from injury.
C.Calling on people to protect hummingbirds.
D.Improving the living environment of hummingbirds.
4.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 5

For more than 140 years, fishers in Laguna,Brazil have formed an unusual partnership with local dolphins. As soon as the fishers spot a dolphin waving its tail, lifting its head, and diving deeply, they race into the water with their nets. Now,a new study suggests the dolphins are willing partners in this cooperation and that the animals may be guiding the people. They pay close attention to the humans, timing their actions to maximize their catch.Over the years, dolphins have been showing the fishers “where to stand and when to get ready to throw their nets” in the dark waters. It’s almost as if the dolphins are training the humans.
As much as the fishers were watching the dolphins, the dolphins were also watching the fishers, the study found. Both species must time their actions correctly to catch fish. The people wait with their nets at the ready for a dolphin to approach closely. When a dolphin sees a ready fisher, the animal will give a tip, usually that deep dive, which tells the fisher the mullet(鲻鱼) are right there and it’s time to cast their net.Sometimes, either dolphin or fisher will respond incorrectly, and neither catches fish.Yet,the scientists reported that of nearly 3,000 recorded fishing attempts, nearly 46% were successful. To ensure this accuracy, fishers must understand the dolphins’ tips, learning them over time.Even it can say,“The dolphins are almost like teachers.”
Other populations of dolphins have also been known to cooperate with human fishers, rushing fish toward shore or into nets off eastern Australia,Mauritania, and Southeast Asia. But these practices have either disappeared or are in decline.
The same fate likely faces the Laguna dolphins if the mullet numbers, which have dropped over the past decade because of overfishing, continue to decline. The practice may escape such a fate,if Brazil regards this dolphin-fisher relationship a cultural heritage,as the scientists propose.“Without mullet,” the expert says,“this partnership will end.”
5.How do the dolphins guide the fishers to catch the fish
A.They constantly attack fish. B.They use body languages.
C.They make strange voices. D.They pull the nets.
6.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A.Introduce a new topic for discussion. B.Provide suggestions for the readers.
C.Share some interesting facts about dolphins. D.Conclude the previous paragraphs.
7.What can we learn about the dolphin-fisher relationship in Laguna
A.It has completely disappeared. B.It develops fast.
C.It needs to be protected. D.It becomes useless and meaningless.
8.In which column of the newspaper can we read the passage
A.Art. B.Health. C.Sports. D.Animals.

Once, the rainforests of Kauai were filled with the akikiki,a small songbird. But when humans set foot on the Hawaiian islands, they brought mosquitoes(蚊子) that carry a disease, which led to the akikiki and other native songbirds beginning to die off.The bird’s population fell in the early 2000s,and today scientists guess just five akikikis exist in the wild on Kauai.
Now,on a nearby island, the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC) is fighting to keep the birds alive by housing about 40 akikikis and encouraging them to reproduce in captivity(圈养繁殖).There, they follow the birds’ natural habitat—placing nest-building materials, creating Kauai’s rain patterns and raising the birds’ favorite insects. They also try to maintain the birds’ natural behavior by putting insects at any time and encouraging them to search for food.
But in earlier August, they faced an unexpected challenge: wildfire. While the captive akikiki escaped unhurt with the help of on-site staff, their caretakers still have a long road ahead of them. For one thing, climate change appears to be reducing the amount of rain that falls on Maui. For another, rising temperatures are allowing mosquitoes and the disease they may carry to expand(扩大) their range.
Wildlife officials have a plan for solving the insects. They want to raise male mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia,a type of bacteria(细菌) and then put them into the wild.Wolbachia cannot make humans or pets sick, but mosquitoes with the bacteria will have difficulty producing eggs.In turn, this will lead to an eventual reduction in the mosquito population in Hawaii and reduce the spread of the disease mosquitoes carry. But some argue the efforts could have unexpected results that might further destroy Hawaii’s ecosystem.
For now, many are uncertain about the condition of the akikiki and other endangered Hawaiian species.Bird experts think even if the mosquito control plan moves forward, these tiny birds may have a faint chance of recovering outside of captivity. As Dino Grandoni writes for The Washington Post,“Even the most positive bird researchers are certain the akikiki only has months left to live in the wild.”

Each year, the discovery of new shark species underlines how little we know about ocean biodiversity. In a recent report conducted by Sibert and Rubin, they reported an unexpected finding: a large-scale extinction of sharks in the pelagic ocean, the largest ecosystem on Earth, about 19 million years ago.Their discovery suggests that some extinctions in the open sea of the past may have been mysterious.
The study of Sibert and Rubin takes advantage of a system by using tiny, hard bits of shark skin and bony fish teeth that naturally fall from their bodies to the seafloor. These extremely small fossils provide a rich record of ancient oceanic sharks and their abundance for thousands of years.By studying fossils from many regions, the diversity patterns can give major insights into evolution(进化) of the open sea that would be otherwise unknown.
Sibert and Rubin quantified(量化) a past extinction of sharks, reporting a 90% decline in number and >70% drop in diversity. They found that nearer-shore sharks appear to survive, but migratory ones go extinct. The finding of this study is that sharks had undergone a widespread extinction that reorganized their communities from 16 million to 20 million years ago.
Sibert and Rubin narrowed the disappearance of sharks to a window of time under 100,000 years around 19 million years ago,but the causes of this event remain unclear.Because this time period does not stand out as a period of major climatic change, the authors do not attribute(归因于) environmental factors as an extinction driver. As for other causes, the loss of shark diversity is directly linked to overfishing.
The loss of sharks from the oceans has profound, complex, and unavoidable ecological consequences because their presence reflects the stability of marine ecosystems.Yet,one-quarter of the global diversity of sharks is currently threatened with extinction.Despite recent improvements in conservation actions, shark communities never recovered from a mysterious extinction event 19 million years ago; the ecological fate of what remains is now in our hands.
5.What did Sibert and Rubin find
A.The negative impact of the extinction of sharks.
B.The mysterious reasons behind the disappearance of sharks.
C.The most recent advances in the study of the largest ecosystem.
D.The large-scale decline in the number of sharks about 19 million years ago.
6.How did Sibert and Rubin conduct their study
A.By collecting and analyzing shark fossils worldwide.
B.By quantifying the movement of near-shore sharks.
C.By using a system to study the naturally fallen bits from sharks.
D.By keeping track of ancient oceanic sharks and their activities.
7.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE

In late spring and early summer each year, tens of millions of butterflies come out of their chrysalises(蛹) in the butterfly valley in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. For butterfly expert Yang Zhenwen,it is the busiest time of the year, but he greets it with great enthusiasm.
Before the break of dawn,Yang has already arrived at the observation point, busily tending to the needs of the awakening butterflies.“Due to warmer temperatures, the ‘butterfly explosion’ this year occurred slightly earlier than usual, and the size of the butterflies is larger than that in previous years,” said 46-year-old Yang, curator(馆长) of the butterfly valley museum.“We expect that there will be about 80 million to 100 million butterflies in the valley during this year’s ‘butterfly explosion’.That seems so crazy,” said Yang.According to Yang,in the valley, more than 320 butterfly species have been identified in specimens(标本) or photographs, including the rarest, most primitive, largest and smallest butterflies in China.
Besides Yang, many local villages have also assumed the role of butterfly guardians. However, the journey toward achieving human-butterfly harmony was far from easy. Some two decades ago,the villagers had little awareness of butterfly protection, believing wrongly that butterflies could endanger their food crops. They viewed them as pests that should be removed.
In 1998,Yang began his journey at the agricultural science station in Ma’an’di Township, the very place where the butterfly valley lies.“It was there that I got into a frequent dilemma—the local villagers, seeking to protect their crops, would often turn to pesticides to kill the butterflies,” he said.“However,my sincere love for these creatures forced me to prevent them from harming the delicate insects.”
Now,the development of ecotourism relying on butterfly resources has successfully changed the once extremely poor township.More villagers have started reproducing butterflies. He describes the butterfly valley as a “dream-making machine”,which extends the “butterfly dream” of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
1.What made Yang’s aim to reach human-butterfly harmony hard in the beginning
A.Warm temperatures in local villages.
B.The number and size of the butterflies.
C.Improper location of the butterfly valley.
D.Lack of awareness of butterfly protection.
2.What does the underlined word “dilemma” in paragraph 4 mean
A.A choice difficult to make. B.A fact obvious to understand.

You may be attracted by pictures of animals in the wild. You might have imagined yourself taking pictures of animals that are seldom seen in the city.If you do get that chance, you may want to consider the following tips or rules.
First of all,a lot of professional photographers give respect(尊重) to these animals and the environment they are in.Just remember that you should respect the animals and the environment in case these animals bite or attack you.
Keep in mind that you are taking pictures of real, live, wild animals.A wild animal may bite to protect itself. You must be aware while taking their pictures and be gentle in all your movements.Do not feed the animals,or interact(互动) with animals that are sleeping or caring for their young.

Now if those rules are clear,it is time for planning.Consider the weather; some animals do not go out when it is raining while some animals love the rain. Therefore,a little research on the weather will not hurt. You should consider taking pictures after sunrise and before sunset. Now if the animal is active at night, then you should prepare to fight against not only the wild but also the darkness.
An adventure in the wild will make you very excited. However, you should be well prepared, have experts to back you up,and also a permit(许可证) for doing the photo shoot. If you do not have any of these, then maybe you should consider visiting the zoo instead.
5.What should you do to show respect to the wildlife
