It was about 10 years ago that Sandy noticed her mother,Pearl, had become quiet after she moved into a nursing home for patients of Alzheimer’s disease.
“We tried everything—photos, old stories—but nothing worked,” she said.“It was really hard for everyone to see how she had changed.” Then one day while Sandy was in a toy store, she had an idea: Why not give Pearl a baby doll so she could feel as if she were caring for something again And why not give one to all the elderly in the care center
As soon as Sandy gave Pearl the doll, her mother’s face lit up.“She started talking again and she never went anywhere without that baby,” Sandy said.“She took the ‘baby’ to the dining room with her and slept with her in her arms every night. The doll brightened her last years indeed.”
In the following 10 years,Sandy and her husband,Wayne, continued to buy dolls and hand them out to the elderly of care centers near their home every New Year. Now Pearl’s Memory Babies is a nonprofit organization that has contributed more than 300 to old people with Alzheimer’s disease at nursing homes since February 2018.
Last year,Sandy posted New Year’s photos on Facebook, all of which are about seniors reacted to dolls that she and Wayne sent to a local nursing home. The post was shared more than 210,000 times overnight.People gave almost $15,000 online. That helped the group buy many dolls.

Every time your fingers touch your cell phone, they leave behind trace of amounts of chemicals. And each chemical offers clues to you and your activities.By analyzing them, scientists might be able to piece together a story about your recent life,a new study finds.
A molecule(分子) is a group of atoms. It represents the smallest amount of some chemical.Your skin is covered in molecules picked up by everything you’ve touched. With each new thing your skin contacts, you leave behind some small share of what it’d touched earlier.
Researchers at the University of California,San Diego (UCSD) recently analyzed such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers. The study was led by biochemist Amina Bouslimani. To explore those residues, the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer’s phone with a cotton swab. The scientists also swabbed each person’s right hand. Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each cell phone.
The scientists discovered as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared these to a database of chemicals.Pieter Dorrestein,a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earlier, which contains various substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces of anywhere from hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules reflected what had been in the body, and what each person had handled before touching the phone. From all these molecules,Bouslimani says,“We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics, dyes her hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer over wine or likes spicy food.”
Police already use molecular analyses to look for traces of explosives or illegal drugs. To date,Dorrestein says,he’s never heard of police using phone residues to narrow down behavioral clues to search for a suspect. But detectives might one day use such data to track down someone who left a phone behind at a crime scene.
28.What aspect of the user can we conclude by analyzing the leftovers on the phone
A.Personality. B.Intelligence. C.Appearance. D.Lifestyle.
29.What was the first thing the researchers had to do for the study
A.Comparing different chemicals.
B.Hiring volunteers with cell phones.
C.Building a database containing chemicals.
D.Collecting the chemicals from phones.
30.What does the underlined word “residues” in the third paragraph probably mean
A.Data. B.Remains. C.Substances. D.Clues.
31.What’s Dorrestein’s attitude towards the application of the research finding
A.Uninterested. B.Disappointed. C.Doubtful. D.Positive.

Drones(无人机) equipped with hyperspectral and thermal sensors will be applied in Italy to spot trees infected with Xylella fastidiosa,a deadly bacterium that has been destroying the country’s olive crops for almost a decade.
The sensors will be able to detect signs of early infection that cannot be noticed easily, such as slight changes in the color of leaves, allowing farmers to select affected trees and prevent outbreaks.More than 300,000 trees will be examined using the new drone technology in the next few months.
“This technology has the potential to give the Italian government a major advantage in the fight against Xylella,” says Manuela,a researcher of the project.“We tend to realize far too late if a plant is infected—these drone sensors will allow us to spot and prevent outbreaks rather than just react to them.”
Early detection strategies like this are key for controlling Xylella, which is spread by spittlebugs that feed on infected plants, taking in bacteria and passing them to healthy plants nearby.Once the bacteria have infected a plant, they block the xylem vessels that transport water through the plant, cutting off its ability to absorb water and, eventually, killing it.
“Xylella is particularly dangerous because it has many different natural hosts through which it can spread,” says Andrea Maiorano,a plant health expert at the European Food Safety Authority in Italy.“There are hundreds of different plant species that can host it.”
According to the law,as soon as a tree is found to be infected with Xylella,it must immediately be cut down—along with all species easily affected within a 50-metre radius(半径).A 2.5-kilometre zone around the infected plant is then closely monitored to prevent spread to surrounding trees. The remote-detection drones will ensure that any infected tree in these areas is diagnosed and recognized quicker than ever before.
The hope is that this containment strategy in infected regions can buy time for the rest of the country’s olive plantations until a cure can be found.
32.What is the problem with the olive crops in Italy
A.Lack of water. B.Bacteria infection.
C.Soil pollution. D.Backward technology.
33.How do drones help the farmers
A.By curing the affected trees.
B.By changing the color of leaves.
C.By monitoring the quality of trees.
D.By discovering the unnoticed infection.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The danger of Xylella. B.The key of the strategies.
C.The cause of the bacteria. D.The feature of the drones.
35.What can we expect of the drones in the future
A.They will prevent trees from being infected.
B.They will ensure the recognition of the plants.
C.They can speed up the diagnosis of diseased trees.
D.They might help increase country’s olive plantations.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”,wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck.“I’d like to play a role in the show,” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess.Another leading role was an evil witch(女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever.Immediately,Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess.Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well.So an audition(试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess,Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes,a little.And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by,Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last.Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment.Nervous though Molly was,she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced.During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out.Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person.Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting,“Maye is the princess!” What was worse,Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!
