Jordan knew he wanted to do something unique with his farmland. He wanted to win the local garden club’s “Yard of the Month” award. But he didn’t have the money to buy new trees,so he began by using bushes and shrubs(矮树苗) that a local nursery had thrown away—that looked dead to most people.
Because he worked days at a can factory,Jordan often tended his garden at night.Neighbors got used to seeing one little headlight as Jordan stood on a ladder, cutting and shaping his steadily growing bushes.Gradually, the shrubs took on different shapes.Jordan then began planting trees and using zip ties, coat hangers,PVC pipe, and even his wife’s old stockings to achieve the forms he wanted.“He has a way of manipulating plants to do things he wants them to do by training, bending, wiring, and clipping,” says a neighbor.“And the plants seem to bend to his will.”
Many professional gardeners are amazed by what Jordan has been able to achieve.“The garden itself was created from lack of knowledge,” says Jordan in his booming bass voice,“because I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to do this with plants. For one time in my life, ignorance paid off.”
Jordan’s attention to detail and his willingness to work hard have made him a local hero.He was the first African American to win “Yard of the Month” honor from the local garden club. And more recognition followed: articles in major newspapers and appearances on well-known TV shows.
Jordan’s garden now includes about 400 species of plants and 150 shrubs in different shapes. On his front yard,four-foot-tall letters filled with bright red begonias(秋海棠) spell Love,Peace, and Goodwill. These are the principles Jordan lives by.A box for donations can be found on the property, but giving is optional.Jordan welcomes people who can’t afford to pay.He understands; he’s been there.

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is moving digital.
To reflect this tendency, many mobile budgeting(预算) apps for children have sprung up worldwide:GoHenry,Osper, and Gimi,to name but a few. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents.Parents can add money to children’s accounts, set limits and monitor transactions(交易).Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts(概念),such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For instance, the Swedish app Gimi—with 1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can store money.Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing household tasks. The account is attached to a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe in 2020.
Haglund,CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits.“You don’t become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says.
But Catherine Winter, managing director of financial capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns that while digital tools can help, there needs to be a more structured approach to financial education. The area should “have regular classroom time and ideally should be taught as a standalone subject,” she said.“Children would then have the right context and foundation to get the most out of both the apps and their money.”

A.Digital money.
B.The increase of pocket money.
C.Children’s preference.
D.The inconvenience of piggy banks.

C.It pays children for doing housework.
D.It can teach children concepts related to money.
30.What is Winter’s attitude towards digital tools
A.Doubtful. B.Objective.
C.Appreciative. D.Uncaring.
31.What’s the passage mainly about
A.The importance of financial education.
B.The tendency towards a cashless society.

High-resolution(高分辨率) satellite imagery has been used to map every single tree in Africa, showing a technique that could help improve the monitoring of deforestation(森林砍伐) across the world.Florian Reiner at the University of Copenhagen,Denmark, and his colleagues used images from satellites to map canopy(树冠) across the entire African continent.
Modern satellites usually catch tree canopies at a resolution of 30 meters—fine for measuring the size of forests, but less good at mapping individual trees. The satellite data Reiner and his colleagues used had a resolution of 3 meters, enabling the study to map all trees, including those not part of a forest.
The results suggest that 30 percent of all trees in Africa aren’t in a forest and instead are across farmland, savannah and urban areas.“Many countries in Africa lack thick forests, but have a lot of trees,” says Reiner.“These trees are extremely important to the local ecosystems, the people and the economy.By tracking every single tree, researchers can start to monitor how these trees are coping with climate change or whether they are sensitive to deforestation.” It could also improve the monitoring of reforestation efforts, which are growing in popularity as a way of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
“At a local level, being able to consistently monitor when and where trees are disappearing or reappearing can lead to more actionable insights,” says John Francis at the Alan Turing Institute in London.
“The study is a proof of concept rather than a map ready for immediate commercial use,” says Reiner.“It’s research work. It’s showing what could be done,” he says. But he is already working with colleagues to scale up the tracking approach to cover the entire global canopy: “We’re hoping that this will be seen as a way forward in monitoring tree resources.”
32.Why is high-resolution satellite imagery used to map every single tree
A.To help monitor the deforestation.
B.To have a clear picture of the canopy.
C.To know the exact height of the tree.
D.To improve the satellite technology.
33.What is John Francis’ attitude towards the map
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable.
C.Indifferent. D.Disapproving.
34.What do Reiner and his colleagues expect to do
A.Protect the trees only in Africa.
B.Put the map into commercial use.
C.Track the entire global canopy.
D.Improve the imagery technology.
35.What is probably the best title for the passage
A.Ways to Measure the Size of Forests in Africa
B.Coping with Climate Change by Tracking Every Single Tree
C.A Map from the Satellite Ready for Immediate Commercial Use
D.High-Resolution Satellite Imagery Used in Monitoring Deforestation

I live in San Francisco, where it pretty much never snows. But if you get in a car and drive too far, you’ll arrive at these beautiful,snow-covered mountains.Last week,my friend Ollie and his grandmother Abuela decided to go skiing in the mountains.
They invited me to go with them.I was so excited that I jumped up and down. However,it was colder than I’d expected.Trembling in the cold air,I was afraid to be frozen to death there.Luckily,Abuela, who is probably the kindest human on the planet, offered to let me wear her scarf. It was the softest, warmest, most awesome scarf and more importantly,Abuela had knit(编织) it herself. So moved was I that I couldn’t say anything to express my thanks. With the scarf warming me up,I enjoyed skiing in high spirits together with them.
“These old knees need a rest!” Abuela said after a couple of hours of skiing, pointing at her knees.“You two go ahead and take another run.I’ll be in the lodge, reading by the fire.”
So Ollie and I took one more ride on the ski lift up the mountain. As we looked around at the trees and watched people zipping down the slopes,I felt that one piece of yarn(纱线) on Abuela’s scarf kept tickling(使……发痒) my neck.I said to Ollie,“It’s uncomfortable.Maybe something is wrong with the scarf.”
“Oh yeah,I see it,” Ollie said.
I pulled on the end of the yarn, thinking it was just a loose piece that had separated from the scarf. But the more I pulled, the longer the piece became.
“Jeff,” Ollie said.“You’d better stop. The scarf is unravelling(散开)!”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
When I took off the scarf to see what he meant,I was frightened.
His silly ideas weren’t making me feel better, and I decided to tell Abuela the bad news.

During the winter vacation,my parents took me to Sanya, where I had an unforgettable experience of underwater diving.
After changing into my diving suit,I put on my oxygen tank and went to the sea. With the help of the coach,I started to dive.I saw a colorful underwater world! All kinds of fish were wearing beautiful clothes. There were also some strange shapes of large stones, some like rolling mountains, and some like triangular roofs of houses.I just found that the diving was not so terrible, but full of fun.It was not until this diving that I could see such an interesting underwater world.
This diving trip is so unforgettable. Not only did it let me see the wonderful underwater world, but also let me experience the vast sea.
第二节 参考范文
When I took off the scarf to see what he meant,I was frightened.Oh no! I just turned Abuela’s special scarf into half a special scarf and half a big pile of yarn! It was a one-of-a-kind thing that I would never be able to replace! What could I do I was burning with anxiety, not knowing how to explain the whole thing to Abuela.“Um,you could say a bird suddenly flew down out of nowhere and pulled the scarf right off your neck!” Ollie suggested. How ridiculous! I gave him a dirty look.Ollie then smiled and continued,“You could throw it from this ski lift, and say you accidentally dropped it.”
His silly ideas weren’t making me feel better, and I decided to tell Abuela the bad news. After all,I believed that honesty was more important to Abuela than the scarf itself.Overwhelmed by the feelings of guilt,I started to walk towards Abuela the moment I arrived at the lodge. However, when I finally told Abuela the truth, she was really nice and understanding. She appreciated my honesty and comforted me,telling me that she could knit many more scarves with a great big basket of yarn at home.Breathing a sigh of relief,I hugged her and thanked her from the bottom of my heart. It’s an unforgettable and splendid skiing trip, one where I enjoyed both the pleasure of skiing and warmth from Abuela.
