Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are a very important part of Mexico's ecosystem, but because of the ever-spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. That's where 73-year-old Catia Lattouf de Arida comes in. As a self-taught hummingbird care-taker, she devotes most of her free time and resources to nursing the tiny birds back to health. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital.
Catia's story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression (抑郁). She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life.
Word of her success spread among Catia's friends, and before long some of them began bringing her injured hummingbirds. She didn't repulse them at all. She began to study the bird and their habits in order to better take care of them, and after 11 years of experience, the 73-year-old woman is considered an expert on hummingbirds.
In order to raise awareness of the difficult situation of hummingbirds in Mexico, Catia Lattouf de Arida started posting videos of the patients in her Mexico City apartment on social media, and many of them became popular. That's when the need for her nursing services really blew up. She has cared for hundreds of hummingbirds in her 11-year career, when she has had as many as 50 of them in her apartment at any one time. She spends pretty much all her time looking after the tiny birds.

It was meant to connect us, make us smarter and our lives easier. And it has. But there's at least one corner of life where the Internet has made things so much more difficult: gift giving.
Once upon a time, if you were struggling to find a present for a loved one, there were easy options to fall back on—DVDs, CDs, video games and other physical media. This wasn't even that long ago, but now it's been snatched from our grasp by the Internet which offers us the chance, at a relatively low cost, to watch, listen to or read whatever we want, whenever we want. With everything already watched, listened to, or read, buying a present has become near impossible.
Therefore, we all have to work at becoming perfect gift givers, taking all factors into consideration and searching high and low to seek out the ideal present. If we go the extra mile, there's less chance that the person we have in mind has already bought what we're considering online.
But as I now consider this exact plan of action, I'm thinking perhaps it's not all that bad. Maybe the Internet is delivering us a lesson, firm but fair: the era of half-baked present purchasing is over and it's time to go hard or go home.
In this era of immediate satisfaction, if you want to give someone a useful present, you do have to actually go to the effort of sourcing something nice for them. Perhaps that's making for a more rewarding gift experience for all involved. And perhaps it also means fewer gifts that are given as an excuse and end up being unused.
How is the topic of gift giving introduced in Paragraph 1
By demonstrating the future of the Internet.
By pointing out the shortcoming of the Internet.
By showing the difficulty in using the Internet.
By arguing about the possible benefits of the Internet.
29. What might be a reason for gift giving being difficult according to Paragraph 2
A. Numerous gift options. B. Relative high cost for presents.
C. Limited offer from digital giants. D. Easy access to the Internet media.
30. What does the author suggest readers do
A. Purchase unused gifts. B. Pick out a satisfactory present.
C. Buy fewer gifts as an excuse. D. Make more valuable presents.
31. What's the main idea of the passage
A. The Internet has greatly improved our lives in every aspect.
B. The Internet has made gift giving a more rewarding experience.
C. The Internet has made the process of finding the perfect gift difficult.
D. The Internet has reduced the need for physical media in entertainment.
D
Close your eyes and picture yourself walking in the town. You can probably imagine the turns you'd need to take and the landmarks you'd encounter. This ability to imagine such situations in our minds is thought to be crucial to humans' ability to plan ahead and has long been considered as a feature that separates humans from animals. But a new study has found that rats can think about objects and places that are not right in front of them.
Like humans, when rats experience places and events, specific neural (神经系统的) activity patterns are activated in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain responsible for spatial (空间的) memory. In the study, the researchers developed a brain-machine interface (BMI), which allows them to test whether a rat can activate hippocampal activity to imagine going to a location.
First, some rats were placed into a virtual reality environment and were rewarded when they traveled through this environment towards their goals by running on a treadmill (跑步机). At the same time, the BMI system recorded the rat's hippocampal activity. The researchers could see which neurons were activated when the rat navigated the environment to reach each goal. Next, researchers disconnected the treadmill so that the rats could still see the virtual reality environment, but their running had no impact. By reappearing the brain activity they'd shown during the former activities, the rats could go to reward locations using just their thoughts.
“Although it's still unclear what the rat is experiencing while it's traveling, the team has done a wonderful job of showing rats can voluntarily reactivate mental maps of familiar places,” said Shayna, a cognitive neuroscientist.
The research also shows that the BMI can be used to explore hippocampal activity, providing a new system for studying this important brain region. Because the BMI is increasingly used in prosthetics (假肢), this new work also opens up the possibility of designing new prosthetic devices based on the same principles.
What is the purpose of the new study
A.To explore whether rats have the ability to imagine.
B.To compare how humans and rats process spatial memory.
C.To record how rats navigate in an unfamiliar environment.
D.To prove the hippocampus is associated with spatial memory in rats.
33. What happened to the rats after the treadmill was disconnected
A.They had difficulty running freely.
B.They showed abnormal brain activity.
C.They could reach reward places using mental maps.
D.They were at a loss in the virtual reality environment.
34. What's Shayna's attitude towards the new study
A.Concerned. B. Positive.
C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
35. What does the author stress about the BMI in the last paragraph
A.Its design concept. B. Its research limitation.
C. Its operating rules. D. Its future application.

W: There's a place in Venezuela where lightning strikes about 200 days a year.
M: Are you serious
W: Yep. Locals call it "the Never-Ending Storm of Catatumbo" because the area is near the Catatumbo River. Scientists found that most of the lightning strikes between April and November. NASA named the area "the Lightning Capital of the World".
M: Why does the area get so many storms
W: The Andes Mountains are on one side of the river, and the Cabben Sea is on the other side. Cool mountain winds move into the valley and hit warm sea air, creating the perfect conditions for lightning.
M: Are the people there afraid of getting hit
W: Most people stay inside at night, but they don't really worry about it. The chances of being struck by lightning are pretty slim. In the US, about one in every 12, 000 people get hit in their lifetime.
M: Yeah, but we're talking about an area that gets struck by lightning about 50% of the time.
W: True. This article says that near the Catatumbo River, one in three people get struck every year.
M: Wow. That's really scary! I would never go outside if I lived there.
Text 10
Hello, everyone. My name is Alicia, and I live in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. Today, I'd like to tell something about my hometown and people here. Here in Guanajuato, music and dancing are a big part of life. There are a lot of festivals here, and many kinds of music. Many young people like rock or pop music but my favorite is traditional Mexican music, which is the kind of music my grandparents and great grandparents listened to. I don't know why but I'm just crazy about it. I'm a folk dancer, and I love to perform at special events, which gives me chances to enjoy myself. To be a folk dancer, you have to love the culture and the music here. That's the most important thing, but we also need to work hard and practice a lot. We dance in groups, and every person has to know the steps. And we can't buy traditional folk dance dresses at the store, so we have to make our own. We wear traditional dresses that only come from this part of Mexico.
