Four Places Named after Scientists in Antarctica
There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in the Antarctic. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they’re named after.
Jones Terrace(梯田)
The ice-free terrace in eastern Antarctica’s Victoria Land bears Jones’ name.In 1969,geochemist Lois M.Jones led the first all-female research team from the U.S.to work in Antarctica.Jones and her team studied chemical weathering in the McMurdo Dry Valleys,an ice-free area of Antarctica.Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected,Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley’s ice-covered lakes.
Mount Fiennes
8,202-foot-high Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica’s largest island—Alexander Island—is named after Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic. In 1985,Fiennes became the first female who was invited to join the Antarctic Club,a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
Francis Peak
The 3,727-foot-tall peak on Antarctica’s Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK.Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica’s abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica’s Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in the Antarctic, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets.Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio waves spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica’s ice sheets.

In Phoenix,Arizona, about one in five children is identified with dyslexia(阅读障碍).That means about four students in a classroom of twenty have the problem.
Christine Alm,who has the virtue of being ready to help others,is the co-founder of Dyslexia Road and the mother of four children with dyslexia.According to Alm,each diagnosis(诊断)is unique. That can make it difficult to understand a child’s learning needs.Alm has recently co-founded Dyslexia Road with three other moms whose children also have dyslexia. The nonprofit organization provides learning resources for children who have the learning disability.
Dyslexia means a person has trouble processing written words due to the difficulty of identifying speech sounds.Alm explains that people with dyslexia need more assistance in training their brain to read. But she adds that many people with dyslexia are extremely creative and smart.Whoopi Goldberg,Dav Pilkey and Steven Spielberg are among the famous Americans who have dyslexia.
For Alm,the biggest challenge dealing with dyslexia with her own children is the stigma surrounding the topic. She believes that it’s helpful to have open and honest discussions.“Dyslexia is nothing good or bad,” she says.“So children don’t need to feel shameful and embarrassed.”
Alm and the other co-founders of Dyslexia Road host community events to share resources about dyslexia. On March 2,the organization celebrated its launch with a community gathering. Many people turned up,suggesting to Alm the “power of community”.Dyslexia Road will also host three additional events to connect families with learning experts.Guests will discuss the available educational choices, how to get a diagnostic evaluation and more.Additionally, the Dyslexia Road website offers resources like books.
“We’re excited to get out there and start pushing forward so that people can come together and figure out how to direct this journey,” Alm says.

On Indonesia’s eastern island of Sumba,a lack of electricity once left many communities in the dark at night. But off-grid(离网) solar energy programs are bringing people there limited electricity years before normal power systems reach them.Such small solar panels(电池板) mean a lot to them. They can work later in the evenings, help their kids with their homework and even hold more social gatherings.Besides, there are experts saying off-grid solar programs could be reproduced across the nation of thousands of islands and that the energy is renewable.
However,off-grid solar energy systems face problems too. Most villagers depend on donors, some international organizations,to pay most of the cost of solar panels,so,villagers without off-grid solar panels have to wait until there is enough money from the donors. And when solar systems break, imported parts are needed, which can be hard to find and costly. While the solar systems can power light bulbs and charge cellphones, they do not provide the same amount of power as a grid and thus cannot operate devices like a sound system.
Despite these challenges,off-grid solar programs have proven successful in Indonesia and other places, such as Bangladesh and Africa, south of the Sahara Desert. These programs, offered by companies like Sumba Sustainable Solutions, help provide electricity for millions. The company has sent over 3,000 solar light systems across the island, reaching more than 3,000 homes. To continue the successful completion of off-grid solar projects,Sumba Sustainable Solutions is seeking support from Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership Deal, which involves loans and other money from developed nations and international financial companies.By increasing solar use in Indonesia, more people will have access to electricity and improve their livelihoods.

A new study proves when their teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves.Helen Thai,a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences.“I couldn’t help but compare myself when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image,” Thai says.Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that can be unrealistic in real life,it still had a negative impact on her. So,Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.
They hired a few hundred volunteers, aged 14-18,all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression, which could make them easier to be affected by social media.Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day.The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look.” and “I am satisfied with my weight.”
Among the group that cut social media use,the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5 point scale.“This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say.
“This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai.Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks. It’s also worth experimenting this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders.
32.What inspired Thai to do the research
A.Her major. B.Online posts.
C.Her experience. D.Social pressure.
33.What do the volunteers have in common

D.It needed further study.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Social Media,Love at First Sight
B.To Be a Social Media Addict or Not

We all know that honesty is an important value, and that lying is wrong. 36 Researchers find that we tell on average four lies every day or almost 1,500 every year.
37 If people tell lies to make others feel better and won’t bring any negative effect,we call them white lies.On contrary to white lies, which refers to well-intentioned lies, black lies are told to deceive someone else for their own advantage. No doubt that black lies are harmful, but not white lies.
Lies are often tied in with self-protection. 38 If they feel that they might be hurt, they immediately begin to lie. Also,we all have our own privacy.Maybe parts of the privacy are embarrassing and shameful and we would not like to give them all out.So we tell lies to protect ourselves.
On some occasions,it is necessary to tell lies to avoid hurting others’ feelings, particularly when the truth is too miserable to accept. If we tell the truth, people will get hurt. 39 Of course,it’s OK to tell lies to make them feel better.
Anyhow,we should always keep in mind that honesty is the best policy. As a rule,we should try our best to tell the truth and do all times. If there were no lies, could the world be better I don’t think so. 40
A.Tell the truth or lie
