At the end of August this year I moved from London to a small town in Quebec, Canada, called Matane to work as an English teacher. Patience is a word that has appeared in many forms over the past two months.
I don’t see myself as being the most patient person in the world, but I was deeply impressed by my experience in the first week of teaching. I had just finished a discussion with two students and just as they were leaving the classroom, one of them turned back and said“Thank you for your patience.” That was an early reminder of the importance being patient as a teacher. Moreover, patience in the classroom can be the difference between building students’ confidence in a language and breaking down their confidence entirely. Being patient as a teacher means empathizing(共鸣)with students. It is not easy to learn a new language and allowing students to find their way will benefit them in the long term.
Living my life in French is not easy but the people of Quebec are very patient. Quebecers repeat things several times and they are more than happy to wait while I find the correct words to express myself. It’s a learning process, but with the patience of others the process is less frightening.
When I first arrived in Matane, I kept getting headaches from having to concentrate all the time due to the language. I had to keep reminding myself that it would take time, and two months later the headaches are a distant memory and my ears have become more used to the Quebecois accent. The key is to be patient with yourself. There, is no short cut to learning a language, but it will be worth it in the end.

Children are more likely to prefer foods they believe to be natural to human-made options, rating them higher for tastiness, safety and desirability, a study shows.
Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh and Yale studied the preferences of more than 374 adults and children in the United States when presented with apples and orange juice and told of their origins.
In one study, 137 children aged 6 to 10 years old were shown three apples. They were told one was grown on a farm, one was made in a lab, and another grown on a tree inside a lab. Adults took part in the same study to compare age groups. Both children and adults preferred apples they believed were grown on farms to those grown in labs, researchers found. Children were more likely to refer to freshness, being outside, or sunlight when considering why they chose the farm apple. Adults were more likely to mention naturalness.
In a second study, 85 children aged 5 to 7 years old and a group of 64 adults were shown four different kinds of orange juice — one described as squeezed on a farm, one with no information about it, one with chemicals removed and one described as having chemicals added. Researchers found that the information on the juice’s naturalness had a significant effect on its rating. The participants tended to choose the more natural option based on perceived taste, safety and desire to consume.
Dr Matti Wilks of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences said, “Overall we provide evidence that our tendency to prefer natural food is present in childhood. This research offers a first step towards understanding how these preferences are formed, including whether they are socially learned and what drives our tendency to prefer natural things.”

During the last twenty years there has been increasing worry about the quality of the environment. Along with air and water pollutants, noise pollution has been recognised as a serious pollutant. As noise levels have risen, the effects of noise have become more obvious.
Noise is described as “unwanted sound”. Causes of noise pollution include traffic, rock bands, barking dogs, television, and noise from neighbours, voices, alarms, and boats. Studies show that over forty per cent of Americans are troubled at home or lose sleep because of noise pollution.
Noise has bad effects on people and the environment. Noise causes hearing loss, interferes(干扰)with human activities at home and work, and is in various ways dangerous to people’s health.
When we think, talk, listen to music, or sleep, we need quiet. Even low levels of noise can be annoying. Sudden increases in volume(音量)can make sounds annoying. The quieter the background is, the more penetrating a noise can be.
Noise can also make instructions or warning unclear, resulting in accidents. Louder noise can cause more problems. Continued stress caused by living in noisy conditions can lead to high blood pressure, which is the main cause of some illnesses.
Listening to loud sounds at levels above eighty- five decibels(分贝)can lead to hearing loss. Noise can cause the heart rate to quicken, breathing to increase, and the digestive system(消化系统)to slow down.
Local government has the responsibility to fight noise pollution. For example, it can control the speed of trains through their community. On the other hand, responsible individuals will never make noise pollution wherever they are.
