Lynda Doughty,a marine biologist, developed a passion for marine wildlife during her childhood.Growing up along the coast of Maine, she witnessed the impact of human activity on marine mammals and she made it her life’s work to protect them.“I feel this intense responsibility to help these animals,” Lynda said.“And,really, this is what I was put on this Earth to do.”
Harbor seals are among the most common mammals found along the East Coast, and they face various threats to their well-being,including fishing nets and illegal feeding, chemical pollutants,as well as boat and propeller(螺旋桨) injuries.
Earlier in her career, she worked for a marine mammal emergency response organization that eventually closed due to lack of funding. To fill the gap left by the group,Lynda started her own non-profit organization—Marine Mammals of Maine in 2011.It has since provided response and medical care for more than 3,000 marine mammals.
Lynda’s team operates a 24-hour hotline that responds to calls regarding marine mammals in danger.Their permit allows them to respond to mammals stranded(搁浅) within 2,500 miles of the coastline, and her team only offers help if the mammal is in critical condition.Critically ill mammals are transported to Lynda’s center and nursed back to health.Seals typically require three or more months of professional care treatment before they are released back into the ocean.
In addition to mammal rescues,Marine Mammals of Maine conducts important research to learn about marine mammal habitats and human impacts.Marine mammals can give us clues about the ocean’s health, which ultimately affects human well-being as well. The organization also helps promote marine conservation among youth and the local community. In addition, they instruct the public on what to do,and what not to do,when encountering wild species like harbor seals.
24.What do Lynda’s words mean
A.She was born along the coast of Maine.
B.She ignored the impact of human activity.
C.She did her work with a sense of mission.
D.She protected marine wildlife at a young age.
25.Why did Lynda set up Marine Mammals of Maine
A.To earn more money.
B.To replace the group.
C.To make the group a non-profit organization.
D.To restart marine mammal emergency response.
26.What can we learn about Lynda’s team from paragraph 4
A.It only treats critically ill seals.
B.It rescues marine mammals in danger.
C.It protects all endangered marine mammals.
D.It stops people from fishing marine mammals.
27.What’s the purpose of paragraph 5
A.To state younger generations need to be instructed.
B.To stress the severe situations that marine life faces.
C.To mention other social contributions of Lynda’s team.
D.To show humans have a great impact on marine mammals.

A team of scientists was surprised recently when they spotted an unusual creature near the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. They were wondering if it was a new species.
The scientists were aboard a ship used by the Ocean Exploration Trust to make new discoveries in the world’s seas. The team had released a remotely operated vehicle(ROV) named Hercules to explore the seabed.Equipped with a camera,Hercules can be controlled from the ship and show the team what is happening deep below the surface.
Hercules led the scientists to an unusual sight—a mysterious creature about the same size as the ROV.It seemed like a sea pen,a creature that is related to jellyfish and coral and named for its looking similar to an old-fashioned quill, but the team knew that sea pens had never been spotted in the Pacific before. The only previous sightings of this species had been in the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. This led the scientists to believe that it could be a newly discovered species.
The new creature was observed nearly two miles below the surface in an area of the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii, which had not previously been explored by scientists.Steve Auscavitch,a biologist at Boston University in Massachusetts, was the lead scientist of the team.“From time to time,we come across some things that we never expect to see,and those are often the most powerful observations,” Auscavitch said.
In February, another group of scientists in Spain officially recognized and named two new types of sea pens. The team led by Auscavitch will need to do further research to determine whether the unusual creature they spotted is the first known sea pen in the Pacific Ocean or an entirely new species.Either way,the discovery is exciting.“It really does expand our knowledge about where animals can live and exist,” Auscavitch said.
28.How did the scientists explore the deep ocean
A.By applying a remote-controlled vehicle.
B.By tying machines to deep-sea creatures.
C.By diving into the ocean themselves.
D.By setting a camera on the seabed.
29.What does the underlined word “quill” probably refer to
A.A camera. B.A vehicle.
C.A writing tool. D.A diving robot.
30.What is the next target of Auscavitch’s team
A.To find out more new species.
B.To know about sea animals’ living habits.
C.To confirm the types of sea pens.
D.To identify the new discovery.
31.What might be the best title of the text
A.A New ROV to Explore the Oceans
B.Sea Pens in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans
C.An Unknown Species Spotted in the Pacific Ocean
D.Undersea Exploration Conducted by Boston University

Adults tend to have stronger cognitive, social and emotional skills, which allow them to better identify with, offer advice to,and otherwise support friends. Many young adults enjoy this emotional depth along with an abundance of free time before family and career responsibilities pick up in midlife. It’s no wonder that this age is a high-water mark for friendship. Those who go to college get a few extra years of living near their peers.Later in adulthood, though, people have more demands on their time:work, romantic partnership, and caregiving all compete for their attention.
Plus, when adults enter the workforce full-time,potential new friends don’t constantly surround them the way they did in school or while living in dormitories.Though some continue to carve out time for their social lives,Bagwell said, friendship tends to become “a luxury rather than priority”.
Under these new circumstances, many people see friends less frequently—and they tend to spend the time they do have together differently. For efficiency’s sake, they might pair socializing with other activities, like sharing a meal.Though grabbing dinner with a friend can be engaging,it’s a far cry from well-planned forest ceremonies.Friends could choose to tell each other secrets at a meal, but the activity doesn’t bring about the type of natural openness that play can.
This pursuit of efficiency and the safety of following routine can come at the cost of pleasure. An efficiency mindset risks having friendships feel like making a trade,as if each meeting should be “worth it”.But squeezing time for short and rare meetings is unlikely to feel fulfilling. If you haven’t seen each other in a while, focusing on chatting about old days is natural. However, looking back on important events in life can feel like exchanging notes while joint adventures create memories—the foundation of close friendship. As the sociologist Eric Klinenberg put it,“You tend to enrich your social life when you stop, stay longer and waste time.”
32.Why do young adults possess the deeper friendship
A.They pay their whole attention to making friends.
B.They have more demands on maintaining friendship.
C.They enjoy developing friendship with enormous people.
D.They take advantage of skills and time to keep friendship.
33.What does Bagwell say about friendship of adults working full-time
A.They consider it tough to keep friendship.
B.They place great emphasis on making friends.
C.They have a preference for staying with friends.
D.They spend a large amount of money connecting with friends.
34.What does the author think of well-planned forest ceremonies in paragraph 3
A.They are efficient and engaging activities.
B.Friends get more natural pleasure from them.
C.It is necessary to see friends frequently in them.
D.It takes a long time to make preparations for them.
35.What’s Eric Klinenberg’s attitude towards efficiency-based socializing
A.Ambiguous. B.Positive.
C.Negative. D.Approving.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
To fully appreciate Australian cuisine, you have to consider the unique nature of its wildlife and geography. For one thing, there are the wide plains in the interior of the country, which are home to millions of grazing animals. For another, there is Australia’s long coastline, which is next to all the riches of the sea. 36
One of the most popular red meats in Australia is also unique to the continent:kangaroo. This may seem strange as the kangaroo is a national symbol of Australia. However,in recent years, kangaroos have increased in number to around 45 million. These kangaroos wander onto the roads and into cities, making trouble. 37 As a consequence, the government is encouraging people to use these animals as food.
As for seafood, many of the first Europeans who came to Australia loved the sea. 38 Since the coastline is so long, each region has its own dishes that are related to the seafood found in its waters.
But then, how is all this food cooked?Perhaps the favourite way of cooking food in Australia is the barbecue. 39 It is a time for friends and relatives to get together and have fun.Even strangers passing through will be offered a seat,a cold drink, and something off the grill.
40 As Australia is a diverse country with people from many nations,Australian cooking now has flavours and cuisines from around the globe. No matter who you are and no matter what cuisine interests you,you are always sure to find a warm welcome and a full plate waiting for you in Australia.
A.Australia is made up of many regions.
B.Beyond this,what is Australian cooking
C.Casual friendliness is the key to such meals.
D.People need to pay attention to the protection of kangaroos.
E.Their increased numbers have also harmed plants and other wildlife.
F.Perhaps this is one reason why so many Australians live near the coast.
G.It is no wonder that much of Australian cuisine centres around red meat and seafood.

Jeff and I had many conversations during the year, but I will always remember the time he told me about his family. His father,a successful physician, was cold and strict in Jeff’s words. His father had even paved the way for Jeff to attend the same college from which he had graduated.
Jeff was twenty-seven and a successful business planner at a company—without a degree. His passion was skiing. When he graduated from high school,he decided to decline his father’s offer and, instead,to work with a ski patrol(滑雪巡逻队).With pain in his eyes,Jeff told me he still remembered the day when he told his father he was going to give up college and take a job at a ski resort.
Hearing Jeff’s decision, his father looked off into the distance. Then came the words that still echoed in Jeff’s mind: “You lazy kid.No son of mine is going to work with a ski patrol and does not attend college.I should have known you’d never amount to anything!” The two had not spoken since that conversation.
Later,he was back in the area near where he grew up and he certainly did not want his father to know he was attending college. He was doing this for himself, not for his father. He said it over and over again.Jeff’s sister had always remained supportive of Jeff’s decisions. She stayed in contact with their father, but Jeff had made her promise that she would not share any information about his life with their father.
The day when the graduation ceremony came,I walked around talking to people before it started.I noticed a man with a confused expression.
“Excuse me,” he said as he politely approached me.“What is happening here today?”
“It’s graduation day,” I replied, smiling.“Well, that’s odd,” he said.“My daughter asked me to meet her at this address.” His eyes sparkled and he smiled,“Maybe she completed her associate’s degree and wanted to surprise me!”
I helped him find a seat.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
As I left him,he said,“Thank you.By the way,my name’s Dr.Holstrom.”
Jeff was the last person to cross the stage.

Text 1
W:The zoo’s closed all weekend.Maybe we could go horse-riding
M:I am not sure I can afford that.
W:Hmm,that movie about the woman who rescues animals is on.We could see that.
M:Fine.
Text 2
W:Tell me all about how the wedding went!
M:I wish I could,but I missed.
W:Were you too busy to go to it
M:No,I got really sick on Friday night.I thought I had the flu,but it turned out to be food poisoning. So I couldn’t go to the wedding.
Text 3
M:How are you and your roommate getting along
W:Pretty well. She usually comes home late, but she’s always careful not to make any noise in case I’m sleeping. She’s very thoughtful.
M:That’s nice.
W:Yeah. She’s a real change from my old roommate, who only cared about herself.
Text 4
M:This town is a healthy place to live in.There are many trees, and the air quality is good.I guess that’s because there isn’t a lot of industry.
W:Yeah. But no industry means no jobs.It is difficult to find work around here. The city should bring more businesses here.
Text 5
M:What an awful month we are having!
W:It’s pretty bad, isn’t it?So hot and wet. It’s hard to sleep at night in our dormitory.
M:It’s not usually this hot in the fall.Well,I think I’m going to get some more ice cream in the store.
Text 6
W:How are you going to get home from the restaurant later,Harry
M:Oh,I can just take a bus or a taxi. There are usually plenty of taxis around this area at night.
W:Yes,but not on a Sunday night. You might wait for a long time. Why don’t you ask Kevin to drive you home? He’s having dinner with us and he lives near you.
M:That’s right.I’ll ask him when he’s back from the bathroom.
Text 7
M:So,Maria,is it true you’re going to retire soon
W:Yes.I’m going to be thirty-five soon,so it’s getting harder and harder for me physically, and I’m still recovering from that last back injury I had.But the main reason’s that I need to spend time with my little boy. He’s only two and he’s growing up so fast.I don’t want to miss it.
M:So you don’t enjoy being on tour any more
W:It’s not that I don’t enjoy. It’s just not practical any more. It’ll actually break my heart to give up dancing in public.
Text 8
M:Have you seen a brown briefcase?I had it with me when I came in this morning but I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
W:I think Andy was asking around about a briefcase. Why don’t you ask him
M:Thanks.By the way, congratulations on your new position.
W:Thank you.
M:They couldn’t have appointed anyone better.You’ll make a great director of operations,Margaret.
W:That’s very kind of you,Sean.Ah...and there’s Andy.
M:With my briefcase under his arm. What a relief!See you at the theater tonight
W:Not sure.I had a really long week so I’ll probably take a hot bath and go to bed.
M:Yeah.Tomorrow is the day off and you can have a good rest.
W:Absolutely. So what will you do at the weekend
Text 9
W:Can I ask what kind of ticket you bought?I assume it wasn’t a season ticket.
M:That’s right.No,I just got a normal return ticket.I don’t have a railcard so I didn’t get any discount.
W:Yes,you’d have saved 40% on your ticket today. The single ticket is $20.So you paid the full price for your return ticket
M:I paid $30.
W:Do you usually buy your tickets at the station
M:Well,I do usually but the ticket office closes early and I hate using ticket machines.I think ticket offices should be open for longer hours. There’s always a queue for the machines and they’re often out of order. So I got an e-ticket online.
W:And,is there anything you weren’t satisfied with
M:Well, normally, the trains run on time and are pretty reliable but today there was a delay; the train was about 15 minutes behind schedule.
W:What would you say you were satisfied with today
M:Well,I like the Wi-fi on the train. It’s improved a lot.It makes it easier for me to work if I want to.And the food and drinks are cheaper than before.

M:Hello, everyone. Now I’ll tell you about our trips. On Monday, you will have a forest walk. It’s a guided walk of about seven kilometers. There’ll be a stop halfway, and you’ll be provided with a drink and sandwiches. There are some fairly steep climbs up the hills,so you need to be reasonably fit for this one and bring a waterproof jacket in case it rains. Then on Tuesday we’ll organize a cycle trip, which will give you all the fun of biking without effort. We will take you and your bike up to the top of Mount Lama, and leave you to bike back to the camp. It’s a pity that you may not have fantastic views because it isn’t a clear day according to the forecast.
On Wednesday you’ll be taken to a factory where jewelry is made.If you want, you can buy some of the souvenirs but that’s entirely up to you.The trip starts after lunch, and you’ll return by 6 pm.
On Thursday we can offer trips to the observatory for those who are interested in astronomy. And you’ll be shown the huge telescopes and have a talk from an expert, who’ll explain all about how they work.
Finally, the last day, there’s horse riding. It’s a great experience if you’re a keen horseback rider,or even if you’ve never been on a horse before. They take you down to the beach, and you can ride a horse along the sand and through the waves.

As I left him,he said,“Thank you.By the way,my name’s Dr.Holstrom.” The name ringing in my mind,I froze on the spot.Jeff Holstrom! Could this be the cold, stern father who demanded his son attend college or never enter his home again Curiosity and doubt bubbling up,I turned around to get a glimpse of Dr.Holstrom, attempting to find some facial resemblances.Beaming and scanning,Dr.Holstrom seemed to be looking for his daughter.Speeches given, the dean began to read the names of the graduates, inviting them onto the stage one by one to receive their diplomas.
Jeff was the last person to cross the stage.Having received his diploma,he turned toward the audience, radiant with joy.Suddenly,a lone figure popped into his eyes—Dr.Holstrom.I was not sure how Jeff spotted him in the crowd, but I could tell their eyes met.Dr.Holstrom,gazing at Jeff thoughtfully for a few seconds, opened his arms as if to embrace the air around him.For a moment time seemed to stand still.Jeff came down, smiling with tears in eyes.“My father is here,” he whispered to me.“I think I’m going home.”
