Calling all adventurers and go-getters. College isn’t going anywhere, but you can. WorldStrides Gap Year makes it possible to broaden your horizons—all while taking that well-deserved break from school.
With WorldStrides Gap Year, you’ll visit Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Morocco. The program has three sessions in Athens, Florence, and Seville and each session will earn you 3 credits. Graduation is a significant milestone for everyone. An 89-year-old man called Rene Neira had been trying to finish a degree since the 1950s. However, in the 1960s, he was so passionate about urban and economic development of the southside of San Antonio that he stopped school and got involved with the local government. From that time, one of his life goals was to earn a degree in economics. In 2017, the grandpa and his 19-year-old granddaughter both enrolled (入学) at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
“There were times when we would get lunch together, be in the library together, and just work silently side-by-side,” Melanie Salazar, Rene’s granddaughter, recalled. “He always had something to say, especially if his professors had different opinions than him,” Melanie said. “And there were often times when a professor would invite him to talk about the past.”
Rene’s college years weren’t easy. “He has worked very hard over time. Especially in recent years, with hearing loss and going through seasons of not having a car, there was a term where he had to take medical leave because he had a stroke, so he couldn’t go back to school that term. And then the pandemic started,” said Melanie.
After four years, their hard work finally paid off—they graduated. Together, they stood on the stage. Everyone broke into applause and cheered for this fantastic pair.
Their story has been making waves online. People have nothing but good words for them, “Awww... I love stories like this. This was such a beautiful moment. Congratulations to both of them. Grandpa definitely demonstrated that one shouldn’t give up their dream no matter how long it takes,” one wrote. Another wrote, “I’m motivated to go back to school myself, thanks to his example.”
Rene had the determination to finish his degree even at an advanced stage in his life. Hard work, patience, and determination are the keys to success, especially when the path is not easy or clear.

As Paralympic athletes (残奥会运动员) have been setting new records on Earth, more than 30 people from the UK have become members of a project, which aims to show how people with disabilities can become astronauts.
The Parastronaut Project is looking for people who are suitable to fly into space but haven’t had a chance because of physical disabilities. The project wants to develop something that can make it easier for people with disabilities to travel into space. “If there is one thing we have learned by working on International Space Station, it is that there is great value in diversity,” said a recent report. “We can benefit from their exceptional experience and their ability to adapt to special environments.”
The project worked with the International Paralympic Committee to understand the different types of challenges that people may face. Then it developed a “traffic light” system to determine what types of disabilities are safe for space travel, which ones aren’t, and which ones could be made safe for space travel with certain changes.
Dr. Irene said, “There are some disabilities that could be beneficial for space travel.” For example, people under 1.3 meters tall were chosen because being taller can be a disadvantage in a narrow spacecraft.
There have been 257 applicants from different places. They will enter a long selection process, including tests, interviews, and medical assessments, before successful candidates are announced in October, 2022.

After years of efforts, China’s space station has been fully operational.
Over the past 19 years, from China’s first manned space mission Shenzhou V to the latest Shenzhou XV launch, the nation’s space projects have progressed from a single-astronaut mission to the long-term stay of several astronauts in space, and the length of time the astronauts stay in space has expanded from just 23 hours to six months.
After the Shenzhou XV spacecraft docked (对接) with the Tiangong space station, the three astronauts handed it over to the three new arrivals before returning to Earth. During the week-long transition (过渡) period there were six astronauts living in the space station. That’s really a huge step forward. Actually, China’s space progress has been advancing. It took eight years to go from Shenzhou V to the Tiangong I space lab, and five years from Tiangong I to the more advanced spacelab Tian gong II.
With the arrival of the Shenzhou XV spacecraft and it screw (全体工作人员) , the Chinese space station is opening a new chapter for China’s space program, as the astronauts will conduct a series of scientific experiments in space. More than 40 space science and technology experiments will be conducted by the Shenzhou XV astronauts. And with more scientific research equipment to be sent to the space station, it will be equal to having a world-class university laboratory in space.
Besides, requests have been received from several countries to send astronauts to take part in the space station experiments, and China is coordinating (协调) with them and actively preparing for the training of foreign astronauts.
The International Space Station has conducted over 3,000 experiments during its time in service, and the Chinese space station won’t waste a minute in this regard.
