Most people can’t wait for spring to arrive. It means flowers and warmer weather, all welcome changes from the dark winter days. Now we know that spring is arriving sooner in the Northern Hemisphere (北半球) than it was in the past, thanks to a study published in Scientific Reports.
For example, Los Angeles may experience spring only a day earlier than it did 10 years ago, but further north, in Seattle or Chicago, spring will arrive four days earlier. If you lived in the Arctic, spring could arrive 16 days earlier than it used to.
To determine how springtime is starting earlier, researchers looked at temperature records and 743 earlier studies over 86 years. These studies were about various biological indicators of spring, including birds migrating, plants flowering and amphibians (两栖动物) sounding their mating calls.Researchers then studied these data to see if they were occurring earlier. The result showed that not only is spring making itself known sooner but it’s warmer, too.
Before you go out in a happy springtime hike, spring arriving sooner isn’t so good. The livelihood of migratory birds, for instance, may be concerned.
“The food that birds rely on when they move to the north might not be reliable if the beginning of spring at these higher latitudes (纬度) is expanded by future warming,” said Eric Post.He is a fellow of the John Muir Institute and a polar ecologist.
Animals relying on Arctic sea ice, like polar bears, probably aren’t crazy about things warming up sooner, either, because it impacts on their ability to hunt.Spring’s early arrival could cause disorder in the delicate balance of various ecosystems not to mention how soon you’ll need to buy allergy medicine.

Pack4Good,a campaign (活动) by Canopy,is one of the fastest growing corporate responsibility platforms in America for ensuring paper packaging is not coming from ancient, endangered,or valuable forests.
Canopy’s work in examining supply chains and providing recycled or sustainable (可持续的)packaging solutions has attracted 750 brands (品牌) across all its campaigns, including e-commerce company Amazon, fashion empires like Gap,Marks and Spencer, and others, and publishing and media firms like Mansfield Press,Penguin, and the New York Times.
Only 18 months since the launch of Pack4Good,the campaign has welcomed 29 new brands from food and drink products to the printing, fashion, and e-commerce industries.
“The companies that are joining Pack4Good are the out of the box thinkers we need—leaders ready to change paper packaging supply chains and find more solutions to save forests and our planet,” stated Nicole Rycroft, the founder of Canopy.“We have so many solutions just waiting to be carried out;it’s time to actually put them into practice.”
Pack4Good’s selection of solutions for companies looking to reduce their forest impact are varied. They help connect companies to providers of pulp(纸浆)material like rice and wheat straw that can be turned into packaging, while their stamp of approval(认可标志)—Ancient Forest Friendly—represents the highest ecological qualities in the paper industry, and that the approved material has no endangered, controlled,or ancient wood.
90 million tons of rice straw is burned every year in India, which in the fields surrounding Delhi accounts for 40% of the air pollution in the city area.Canopy wants to take that rice straw and put it in the hands of recycled-paper plants, flooding the market with supply and adding a little more income to farmers.
Pack4Good say these solutions are everywhere;it’s just a matter of helping business get started down the road to sustainable paper packaging supply chains.
As more companies look for ways to reduce their impact on the world environment,it’s up to groups like Canopy to ensure their energy is directed.

We’re often reminded of the importance of preserving the planet as we see it for future generations—and children at St Oswald’s CE Primary School in Chester certainly agree.
Nine-year-old Isobel Kelleher from the school’s Hummingbirds class thinks adults need to take note.“Sometimes they can be busy and I don’t think they think they can make a difference, but if everyone does a little bit it all adds up,” she tells HuffPost UK.“We started looking at plastic pollution in our oceans and the things like plastic bags that are polluting them,” she says.Fish can eat the plastic and they can die, or we might even eat the fish ourselves.
Mr Timms, Isobel’s teacher, has been spearheading a new project at the school which lets children loose creatively to raise awareness of the need to be more environmentally friendly. The entire Hummingbirds class, which is made up of 9-and 10-year-old pupils, has been busy writing poems and creating online video adverts to warn adults about the serious situation of our oceans and wildlife.
Mr Timms thinks children have an important role to play in teaching us how to take care of the things around us.“We sometimes overlook how much we can really learn from children,” he says.“It has been really hard to believe having parents come in saying that their children have been asking them to stop using plastic, and to recycle more, and even stopping them using plastic straws.”
Mr Timms is proud of his Hummingbirds class.“The message that they would like to send to the world is simple:stopping this isn’t someone else’s job,and it won’t be OK if we just leave it.”

Honesty has always been a traditional virtue in China.Despite the passage of time, honesty has been passed down as a mainstream value. 36
A famous Chinese idiom (成语),yinuo qianjin, tells such a story. In the early Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24),a general named Ji Bu was known for being courageous and honest.Legend has it that whenever Ji made a promise,he would spare no effort to fulfill it. 37 There was a saying widely spread:It is better to have a promise from Ji Bu than to get hundreds of ounces of gold.
38 During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911),Li Daquan,a successful businessman in Shanxi province, was visited by a friend who came up with a new idea.In ancient China, carrying a large quantity of cash was not only a heavy burden but could also put the owner in danger. His friend proposed that a draft (汇票) be issued to replace the real cash. This draft was not only a promise to pay,but also a claim that an amount of coin equals to the specified amount and the draft could be cashed everywhere.Li readily agreed and kept his word. The story soon got around, and Li’s honesty brought him a flood of customers and a booming business. 39 It is called the predecessor (前身) of the Chinese banking industry. His banking business eventually expanded into 35 branches across the country.Rishengchang has been preserved and turned into a museum now.
In today’s China, the spirit of honesty is still well-respected. 40 Their stories are broadcast across the country to set good examples and promote the virtue of honesty.

A report on tigers
As a brave, independent animal with high self-esteem,the tiger is often called the “king of the jungle”.Despite being big and strong, they are in danger as hunters hunt them for their fur, bones or other parts of their body. Moreover, they’re losing living areas because people are cutting down too many trees.
Luckily, people have come to realize the important role of wildlife in the balance of nature and started to take action. As students,we should also do what we can to prevent tigers from dying out.Otherwise, there may be none left in the world.

One day, Billy was walking in the park when he suddenly came across a homeless dog.He initially was frightened of the dog, who glared and barked at him from the bushes.
“Hey there...You hungry ” Billy asked softly, trying to calm the dog down as he reached into his pocket to pull out a sandwich. He took one half and held it out to the dog.The dog calmed down, stepped forward and ate it next to Billy.A little calmer, Billy started to pat the dog as she ate the other half.
The dog began to lick (舔) his hand when both pieces were finished.“I’m sorry. That was the only sandwich I took with me,” Billy laughed cheerfully, fully lowering his guard. As he got up, the dog began running and jumping happily around Billy, hoping to play with him.“Sorry, buddy.I have to go home,” Billy said. The dog cautiously followed Billy.Later that evening, Billy saw the dog sitting outside his yard through the window. He immediately ran out to her.“Buddy, what are you doing here ” Billy asked as he playfully patted her.The dog wagged her tail, barking in delight.
“All right.Let me try and see if my mom won’t mind taking you in,” Billy said.
Billy ran back and told his mom all about the dog.“Are you crazy, Billy We barely have enough to sustain ourselves.I’m sorry, but it’s a no!” Mom declined him.
Billy accepted his mom’s words and went outside to say his goodbyes. However, when he got outside, he noticed the heavy storm was coming and felt for his new friend.
He had hoped that the dog would seek shelter somewhere, but she just sat there. He figured she was still waiting for him, so he went out into the rain to try to lead his friend to shelter.

The next morning, Billy put up notices in the park to find the dog owner. A few days later, a man called Thomas came to Billy’s house.“Come, Molly!” Thomas shouted joyfully as soon as he saw his dog.He cried, bending down to try to get her attention.Molly responded with an approving bark and approached Thomas, licking his hand.Thomas and some of his friends had been looking for Molly for weeks, but she was nowhere to be found.Thomas realized that he may have lost her forever until he saw the notices.Thomas thanked Billy for having taken good care of Molly for days.单元综合测评一

24.We learn from the study published in Scientific Reports that .
A.spring comes earliest in Los Angeles
B.Los Angeles is further north than Seattle

32.What can we infer about adults according to Isobel Kelleher

Honesty has always been a traditional virtue in China.Despite the passage of time, honesty has been passed down as a mainstream value. 36
A famous Chinese idiom (成语),yinuo qianjin, tells such a story. In the early Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24),a general named Ji Bu was known for being courageous and honest.Legend has it that whenever Ji made a promise,he would spare no effort to fulfill it. 37 There was a saying widely spread:It is better to have a promise from Ji Bu than to get hundreds of ounces of gold.

In today’s China, the spirit of honesty is still well-respected. 40 Their stories are broadcast across the country to set good examples and promote the virtue of honesty.
A.China selects national role models every year.

“Come on, girl! Go!” Billy said, trying to lead the dog to the nearby sheltered car park. But she wouldn’t move an inch. She stuck right by his side. The rain began to pour down harder.
