“Drink eight cups of water.” We’ve all heard the advice. But if you fall short, don’t worry.
That advice is probably wrong, anyway.
That’s according to new research. It found that for most healthy adults, drinking eight cups
of water a day is unnecessary. But it isn’t dangerous, either. If you do drink eight cups of water,
you are probably just going to be spending more time in the bathroom.
In 1945, the U.S. National Research Council (美国国家科学研究委员会) encouraged
adults to drink about 1.9 liters of water daily. The suggestion referred to a person’s total daily
intake of water, including that from fruit, vegetables and soups. But it has been widely
misunderstood. Many people believe they should drink eight 240-milliliter glasses of water
every day.
So, how much water do you need to drink daily The research found that the water you
need is different from one person to another. It depends on your age, size, physical activity
levels and your city's climate. In general, our needs for water peak(达到最高值)between the
ages of 20 and 50. After that, our needs for water slowly go down. That’s because our cells(细
胞) need water to do all of their work. As our metabolism (新陈代谢) slows down after the age
of 50, our needs for water drop, too.
In addition, since men usually have larger bodies than women, they generally need more
water. People whose jobs require more physical activities need more water than those who have
4
{#{QQABbYQAogigAhAAAAgCEwGQCEMQkgGCCYgOgFAIMAAAiQNABAA=}#}
sedentary jobs. And people who live in hot climates need more water than those who live in
cold climates.
In fact, you don’t really have to work out how much water you need exactly. Just drink
whenever you are thirsty. Water is the best choice. Coffee and tea are fine as well. But try to
avoid sugary drinks. They can cause a variety of health problems.
( ) 31. What does the word “That” refer to
A. Drinking over eight glasses of water a day is good for our health.
B. The advice of drinking eight glasses of water a day may be wrong.
C. The advice of drinking eight glasses of water a day is dangerous.
D. Drinking less than eight glasses of water a day is harmful to your health.
( ) 32. According to the U.S. National Research Council, how can people get 1.9 liters of
water every day
1 People can get it from eight cups of water.
② People can get it from sugary drinks.
③ People can get it from fruit, vegetables and soups.
A.①② B.②③ C.①③ D.①②③
( ) 33. According to the new research, which of the following can show the relationship
between our age(x) and our needs for water(y)
( ) 34. What does the underlined word "sedentary" mean
A. 富有挑战性的 B. 久坐不动的 C. 朝九晚五的 D. 精力充沛的
( ) 35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The advice on drinking eight cups of water daily.
B. The findings of the new research on drinking water.
C. The writer’s advice on drinking water daily.
D. Things that affect people’s needs for water.

No food other than hot pot can show how much Chinese people like to gather together to
enjoy happiness.
Hot pot has a long history. 36 There are about 350,000 hot pot restaurants around
the country, the largest number of any kind of restaurant.
While enjoying a hot pot meal, people sit around a table and eat from a steaming pot. They
can add nearly anything to the hot pot soup, such as meat, seafood, vegetables, tofu and so on.
37 If not, it will lose its tenderness(鲜嫩).
People are free to choose the type of hot pot they like such as spicy, mushroom and tomato.
38 One side is spicy, while the other side is not so spicy. So everyone can enjoy eating it
5

special flavor. Some also drink the soup from the pot.

Mary Anderson 57 up in Alabama. In the winter of 1902, she went to New York
City on a cold and windy day. She rode on a streetcar(有轨电车) to keep herself warm and dry.
The streetcar driver couldn't see the road 58 as the snow and ice began to build up on the
