After I was born, my mother hid me for two years in a children’s home. When she finally brought me home, she presented me to her strict family as an adopted girl. I imagine that she tried to save face and avoid judgment as well as rejection. Being left in a place without a mother during those formative years of my life came at a great personal cost. It is understandable that I felt annoyed when my therapist(治疗师) helped me understand the psychological implications of my mother’s actions.
During 20-some years of therapy, I labored to unearth, express, and work through such a difficult beginning. I saw a number of wonderful and kind therapists. Gradually, as I have healed from my childhood wounds, I have been lucky enough to enjoy marriage and the family that I haven’t experienced.
What finally moved the needle and allowed for a new relationship with her to be improved was finding a calm place inside myself. I discovered a sense of inner security that had always been there, and that could be found when I gave the relationship time and space. Gradually and naturally the capacity for understanding and compassion(同情) for my mother emerged. I was slowly able to let go of burdensome anger. Resting in the spacious room to focus on myself gave me a sense of fullness and ease allowing healing to occur, as if I had been wounded and placed into a hyperbaric (高压的) oxygen room to heal my injuries.
My mother died 15 years ago in our garden cottage. My three children were there to say goodbye, and I was able to hold her during the last night of her life. Looking back, I’m grateful that our relationship ended better than it had started. I am also thankful that our trans-generational experience has had a positive effect on her grandchildren and their outlook on life.
24.What was affected by the author’s childhood wounds
A.The ability to relieve loneliness. B.The courage to express rejection.
C.The development of her character. D.The relationship with her therapist.
25.How did the author find a calm place inside herself
A.By receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatments. B.By ignoring anger and upset intentionally.
C.By trying to be compassionate about her mom. D.By relaxing herself to gain a self-awareness.
26.Which of the following words can best describe the author’s experiences
A.Dull yet unforgettable. B.Unlucky yet instructive.
C.Challenging yet common. D.Effortful yet fulfilling.
27.Why is the author grateful for the trans-generational relationship
A.It enables her children to be optimistic about life.
B.It is always full of sweet and touching memories.
C.It helps her form the appropriate outlook on life.
D.It teaches her children the power of mental therapy.

Scientists have developed a trailblazing 3D-printed device that could speed up patient access to new medicines without the need for animal testing. Thousands of animals are used in the early stages of developing medicines worldwide every year, yet many drugs tested on animals do not end up showing any clinical benefit.
Now researchers at the University of Edinburgh have designed a “body on-chip” that perfectly copy how a medicine flows through a patient’s body. The plastic device means scientists can test drugs to see how different organs react without the need for live animal testing. The device is the first of its kind in the world. Made using a 3D printer, the chip’s five compartments(隔层) look like the human heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and brain. They are connected by channels that resemble the human circulatory system, through which new drugs can be pumped(灌输).
The plastic device uses PET scanning to produce detailed 3D images showing what is going on inside the tiny organs. “The PET imagery is what allows us to ensure the flow of new drugs being tested is even,” said Liam Carr, the inventor of the device.
PET scanning involves injecting tiny amounts of radioactive compounds into the chip to transmit signals to an extremely sensitive camera, allowing scientists to better assess the effect of new drugs.
Carr said, “The platform is completely flexible and can be a valuable tool to investigate various human diseases, such as cancer and immune diseases. For example, we could have a fatty liver disease model in the device and use this to see how having a diseased liver affects other organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, etc, and could even combine multiple diseased cell models to see how diseases can influence each other.”
Carr’s supervisor, Dr Adriana Tavares, said linking five organs together on one device would help scientists effectively study how a new drug might affect a patient’s whole body.
28.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Economical. B.Pioneering. C.Beneficial. D.Portable.
29.What can we know about the “body on-chip”
A.It helps a drug flow through the organs. B.It enables a drug to be quickly absorbed.
C.It creates a realistic human body structure. D.It is the world’s first 3D-printed metal chip.
30.What is implied in Carr’s words
A.PET scanning traces the drug distribution. B.A sensitive camera is inserted into the chip.
C.A fatty liver disease model disturbs the chip. D.Diseased cell models are observed separately.
31.What is the most suitable title for the text
A.3D-printed device is used for developing drugs B.Plastic chip makes new drugs more affordable
C.Body on-chip replaces animals in drug testing D.3D-printed device can make some human organs
D
A recent study issued in Science reveals that misinformation online spreads “further, quicker, more profoundly, and more widely than factual news”. This effect is particularly obvious for false political news compared to misinformation regarding terrorism, natural disasters, scientific topics, urban legends, or financial matters. False news is 70 percent more likely to be reposted on Twitter than the truth, researchers found. And false news reached 1,500 people about six times faster than the truth.
The study, by Soroush Vosoughi and associate professor Deb Roy, both of the MIT Media Lab, and MIT Sloan professor Sinan Aral, is the largest-ever longitudinal(纵向的) study of the spread of false news online. It uses the term “false news” instead of “fake news” because the latter “has lost all connection to the actual accuracy of the information presented, making it meaningless for use in academic classification,” the authors write.
To track the spread of news, the researchers investigated all the true and false news stories proved by six independent fact-checking organizations distributed on Twitter from 2006 to 2017. They studied approximately 126,000 cascades—“instances of a rumor(谣言) spreading pattern that exhibits an unbroken repost chain with a common, single origin” — on Twitter about contested news stories posted by3 million people more than 4.5 million times. Traditionally, either the application or the users are responsible for spreading rumors. The researchers conducted an experiment by removing Twitter robots before running their analysis. They then included the robots and ran the analysis again and found none of the main conclusions changed.
So what to do In an interview for the MIT Sloan Experts video series, Aral said possible solutions include labeling fake news much as food is labeled, making unfavorable financial policies such as reducing the flow of advertising dollars to accounts that spread fake news, and using algorithms(算法) to find and control the effect of fake news.
32.What is special about false news
A.It pays more attention to political information.
B.It enjoys more online popularity than the truth.
C.It misleads viewers with seemingly true words.
D.It involves more types and fields than the truth.
33.For what consideration does the study use the term “false news”
A.Value of research. B.Academic tradition.
C.Research methods. D.Severity of problems.
34.What might the experiment in Paragraph 3 show
A.Humans are more likely to spread false news than robots.
B.The researchers didn’t rely on robots to reach conclusions.
C.The number of views of the two analyses remains the same.
D.Twitter robots have changed the spreading chain and pattern.
35.Which of the following tips does Aral agree with
A.Advertising to persuade people to identify fake news.
B.Labeling fake news about food as much as possible.
C.Using AI to locate fake news and weaken its harm.
D.Collecting taxes on accounts spreading fake news.

Countless 52 and increase in prices have made it increasingly difficult to watch TV. I miss the days when I could watch 53 of my favorite childhood shows on Disney. Now, they’re all 54 behind a paywall. That’s why I say, with a heavy 55 , that TV has been ruined.

When I was in middle school, one of my classmates, Wilson, came from a financially disadvantaged family. Without support from the local government, he wouldn’t have been able to gain knowledge with us. Wilson always kept a low profile despite his shiny academic performances and basketball skills.
In a class meeting, our headteacher, Lily, told us to share our ideal jobs on stage. When it was Wilson’s turn to share, all of us fixed our eyes on what he was going to express. He had never talked about his dream with anyone of us. Contrary to my assumption that he wanted to become a scientist, he said, “I desire to become a professional basketball player, but I don’t know whether it’s possible for me. I just have no money to realize this demanding dream.” Lily, who was experienced in inspiring students, persuaded Wilson to persist in enhancing his basketball skills in spare time. She also noted that every dream deserved respecting.
Three months later, Wilson’s birthday came. Our monitor, Diana, put forward an idea that all of the classmates prepared a gift for him together. Without hesitation, we were totally for the idea. However, no one knew what kinds of gifts Wilson loved. It seemed a headache for us to pick out a suitable gift. Suddenly, Diana broke the silence, saying, “Maybe we can consider Wilson’s dream— basketball. Selecting something about playing basketball will cheer him up.” We all nodded. With our tasks assigned, we set out to make preparations for Wilson’s birthday, ranging from decorating settings, raising money, to buying a birthday cake.
That day finally came after five days. We planned to give Wilson a big surprise. Therefore, we just informed him that the P. E. teacher was waiting for him on the basketball court. Undoubtedly, he ran to the basketball court. Meanwhile, the whole class were expecting his arrival, hoping to witness the surprise with him. Soon, Wilson entered the basketball court, unaware of what would happen next. “Happy birthday!” we screamed excitedly.

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear Catherine,
Upon learning the “Growing Pains” column you’ve set recently, I couldn’t wait to turn on my laptop and have a look. Prior to this. I was diagnosed with obesity, which was caused by physical inactivity and unhealthy eating habits. Weighing over 90kg, I dare not make friends with my classmates for fear that they may laugh at me.
Therefore, I crave to obtain help from you. Adept at maintaining a slim figure, you must have mastered how to control the weight. I desire to listen to your advice on losing weight. Apart from that, it would be of use to me if you shared the secrets of having a positive mindset with me.
Looking forward to your quick response.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
第二节
Diana led Wilson to see the birthday cake, which reminded him of his dream. “Wilson, we have no idea of what your beloved gift might be. Thus, we eventually reached an agreement that a birthday cake was something that would allow us to share the joy with you,” said Diana. Having a closer look at the cake, Wilson couldn’t conceal the contentment on his face. The image on the cake caught his attention, which was composed of a boy, a basketball and a net. It conveyed the message that the boy was redoubling his efforts to throw the basketball into the net. “Don’t you think that the boy on the cake resembles you, both in appearance and diligence ” asked Diana.
Moved by our warmth and special gift, Wilson extended his thanks to us. “Thanks for your thoughtful arrangement. It’s beyond my expectation that you bear in mind my birthday. This scene will linger vividly in my mind permanently,” said Wilson. One of the classmates persuaded Wilson to light up the candles and make a wish. Wilson followed the advice. With candles lit up, he plucked up his courage to express his wish of becoming a professional basketball player. Applause coming flooding in, we were delighted that he was determined to stick to his dream. It turned out that this tailored cake was an accurate choice. Feeling over the moon, we cut the cake and enjoyed the greasy yet delectable cream together.

M: I see. Every time you get up in the morning, you look into the mirror carefully. But don’t judge a book by its cover.
W: Well, let’s dine out tonight. I’ll consult a dietician tomorrow.
Text 10
“Change doesn’t mean evolution,” Pablo Picasso said in 1923, who was born in 1881 and died in 1973. “If an artist varies in his ways of expression, this only means that he has changed his manner of thinking, and it may be for the better or it may be for the worse,” With these words, Picasso clarified two central principles of his artistic production over nearly 80 years: his openness to a diverse range of styles, and his opposition to the idea that changes in art are necessarily associated with improvement or progress. Take his diverse approaches to painting the human head as an example, works as different as The Painting Woman with Pears, The Pastel Woman with a Flowered Hat, The Sculpture Head of a Woman, and The Ceramic Tile Head of a Faun show some of the various creative strategies that Picasso adopted, abandoned, and returned to. Even though during his life Picasso’s works were praised as representative of specific artistic movements, the artist actively challenged thoughts of pointless changes of styles.
