“Why do you have 9,632 emails in your inbox(收件箱) ”
I looked at my husband, “Um… is that a lot How many are in your inbox ”
“About twenty,” he replied. I looked at my inbox. There were emails I had meant to deal with; emails from customers and the kids’ schools with information I needed; there were time-sensitive offers I’ d never got around to investigating; endless updates from the social media platforms I subscribed to, and the rest I had kept just in case.
I realized that I had become an email hoarder (囤积者). I clearly had a problem and I needed to act.I paused my work and began to delete unwanted emails. An hour later I made little progress.
“Just delete the whole lot,” my husband strongly suggested.
Could I do that It was appealing. But I paused. I couldn’t. I did have a problem! Then I decided to compromise. I kept the last month’s emails and deleted everything else. I looked at my almost empty inbox. Wow, it felt so good.
To be honest, I feel genuine anxiety about deleting emails, FOMO(错失恐惧症) is a real problem for many people like me with email issues. So many emails are “offers”. What if that amazing offer never comes up again But the fact is that they do … frequently. What’s more, these great offers are often time-sensitive and so we hang on to them “just in case”, then miss the deadline anyway and still don’t delete them.
I found it useful to limit my emails to 50 and I use an email system which ensures all school emails go into a separate inbox, so I can see at a glance when “Dress like a Roman” day or “Bring an onion to school” day (yes really) is coming up! I feel more in control and organized now. I’m on top of my inbox. Now I’m off to handle the cupboard under the stairs!
24. What was the author’s immediate reaction to her husband’s suggestion
A. She approved of it. B. She felt annoyed at it.
C. She hesitated about it. D. She was astonished at it.
25. What led to the author’s anxiety about deleting emails
A. The deadline that she forgot to meet.
B. The fact that she liked keeping emails.
C. The offer that she might never give.
D. The fear that she would miss out something.
26. What does the author do with her inbox at last
A. Adopt an email system to classify all emails.
B. Separate unwanted emails into a new inbox.
C. Reply to school emails as soon as possible.
D. Set a restriction to the number of emails.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. How the author became an email hoarder.
B. How the author takes her inbox in hand.
C. Why FOMO is a real problem.
D. Why emails turned out to be a headache.

The California sea otter (海獭), once hunted to the edge of extinction, has staged a thrilling comeback in the last century. Now, scientists have discovered that the otters’ success story has led to something just as remarkable: the restoration of their declining coastal marsh (沼泽) habitat.
Elkhorn Slough, a coastal marsh within Monterey Bay, had been experiencing severe damage. The root cause was a growing population of shore crabs, which fed heavily on the marsh plants, weakening the structural integrity of the habitat. Coastal marshes like these are not only natural defenses against storm waves but also serve as important carbon storage areas and water- cleaning systems.
The conservation-driven comeback of the sea otter has been crucial. California’s coastlines were once alive with sea otters. Sadly, they were nearly wiped out at the hands of fur traders. In the 1980s, conservation efforts aided these otters in re-occupying large areas of their former range. Now, Elkhorn Slough has the highest concentration of sea otters in California, with a population of about 100. By naturally feasting on crabs, the otters have helped a significant regrowth of plant life. Brent Hughes, a scientist working alongside Angelini, led a three-year study. Their findings were clear: in areas with sea otters, crab numbers fell markedly. This led to a resurgence in plant growth, which in turn stabilized the soil and lowered the rate of soil washing away.
As the sea otter population continues to restore, their positive impact on coastal ecosystems is likely to increase. It not only showcases the sea otter as a central species-a species that has a significant effect on its natural environment-but also highlights the essential nature of top predators(捕食者) in preserving ecological harmony. “My honest reaction was-this could become a classic in the literature,” says scientist Lekelia Jenkins. She reveals marsh restoration also helps people by reducing flooding. “Suddenly, sea otters go from just cute things we like to something that can protect our livelihoods and our properties.”
28. What change did the disappearance of sea otters bring about
A. Fewer predatory crabs. B. More coastal plant life.
C. Better water-cleaning effect. D. Worse coastal ecological balance.
29. What does the underlined word “resurgence” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Barrier. B. Decline. C. Revival. D. Expansion.

B. To introduce a new research study on sea otters.
C. To demonstrate the practical benefits of sea otters.
D. To emphasize the need for increased conservation efforts.
31. What is the main message conveyed from sea otters’ impact
A. The necessity for controlled hunting.
B. The interconnectedness of the ecosystem.
C. The drawbacks of wildlife reintroduction.
D. The need for human intervention in nature.

Imagine you need milk, so you go to the grocery store to pick some up, only to find there are dozens of options. These days, you have to make a decision on not only the percentage of fat you want, but also what source you want your milk to be coming from: cows, soybeans… You have no idea what milk to pick. There are so many choices that you are confused.
This phenomenon is known as the paradox (悖论) of choice and it is becoming a concern in the modern world, where more and more options are becoming easily available to us. While we might believe that being presented with multiple options actually makes it easier to choose one that we are happy with, and thus increases consumer satisfaction, having too many options actually requires more effort to make a decision and can leave us feeling unsatisfied with our choice.
The idea was popularized by American psychologist Barry Schwartz when he published his book, The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. Schwartz, who has long studied the ways in which economics and psychology intersect(交叉), became interested in seeing the way that choices were affecting the happiness of citizens in Western societies. He identified that the range of choices that we have available to us these days is far greater than that people had in the past; however, consumer satisfaction has not increased as much as traditional economics theories might expect.
Schwartz identified that the paradox of choice carries the most consequence for people that are maximizers. Maximizers, unlike satisficers, are concerned with making the best choice instead of simply making a choice that they are happy with. When there are many options available to maximizers, it becomes harder for them to determine which is the best, which can cause them to feel a great deal of regret after they have made a choice.
Instead of believing that freedom of choice is unlimited, Schwartz advocates that the role of psychology and behavioral economics should be to find the kind of limitations on freedom that can lead to the greatest level of happiness within society.
32. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning buying milk in paragraph 1
A. To lead in the topic.
B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To show that we have more choices when shopping.
D. To indicate that people pay greater attention to health when shopping.
33. What does the paradox of choice suggest
A. More options mean less satisfaction.
B. Consumer satisfaction has greatly increased.
C. People are happy with more choices.
D. Modern people are happier than their ancestors.
34. What can be learned about satisficers
A. They aim for the very best. B. They tend to follow their feelings.
C. They often regret their decisions. D. They have trouble making a decision.
35. What does Schwartz suggest people do
A. Hold on to their beliefs. B. Accept their own behavior.
C. Give up freedom. D. Limit their own choices.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse still, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend, Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ” Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice, “It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.” Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted, “Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.” “Just two of us.” complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other. Suddenly, an idea flashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement. “Yes, that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.
