By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, displaying his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more—specifically to start showing his work in a juried (评审) exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That was when he had trouble, discovering in the application that the minimum age for submission was 18

It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.

A new form of house is popping up along the beaches of South Africa -tiny white beach nests (巢). They are just big enough to fit a family of African penguins. Their unique selling point: a safe and cool place for penguins to breed (繁殖).
African penguins grow strong in the cold currents of the South Atlantic Ocean. But when they come to land, their thick black coat absorbs the heat, and they desperately look for cover—both for themselves and their eggs.
Historically, the penguins dug holes in layers of guano(海鸟粪层), but in the 1800s, traders started selling guano as fertilizer (肥料), leaving the penguins and their eggs increasingly exposed to hunters and the burning sun. This, combined with other threats such as egg hunting, overfishing and climate change, has caused African penguin populations to decline sharply. That’s why conservationists have come to the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Project (APNP), which aims to build artificial nests to give penguin parents a safe and shaded place to raise their babies.
Although guano 0trade gradually disappeared, recreating the layers isn’t easy. Seabird populations have declined so much over time, so there are simply not enough birds to recreate it, says Kevin Graham, director of the project.
Instead, the project decided to build artificial nests. The design took years to develop, as Graham and other scientists closely studied old guano nests and worked out how best to copy “Mother Nature”. Getting the right temperature and humidity, the nests create an air conditioning effect. “The project started to build the nests in 2018 and the nests have usage rates of at least 99%,” he explains.
Graham agrees that population recovery depends on more than just giving African penguins a safe place to breed. It’s not simply a case of “we give them a nest, the species is saved,” he says. “It’s a big part of it, but there has to be more.”
28. What can we learn about earlier penguins
A. Their eggs were often eaten by seabirds.
B. They were traded in markets in the 1800s.
C. Their waste was used as excellent fertilizer.
D. They used guano layers to house themselves.
29. Why was the APNP started
A. To fight against egg hunting
B. To offer penguins a shelter to live and breed.
C. To call on people to rescue injured penguins.
D. To build artificial nests to save endangered seabirds.
30. Why is it difficult to have natural nests for penguins
A. There isn’t enough guano. B. The land space is too limited.
C. The temperature is too low. D. There are too many penguins.
31. What is the purpose of the text
A. To call for the protection of penguins.
B. To introduce a new nest for African penguins.
C. To promote the African Penguin Nest Project.
D. To compare penguins’ natural and artificial nests.

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys(绢毛猴) use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of their daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts 5later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva (红檀香),v which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species to improve their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
32. Why did tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree
A. They did this to help their digestion.
B. They were attracting companions’ attention.1.
C. They were trying to keep themselves healthy y.
D. They regarded the tree as part of their territory.
33. What does paragraph 3 focus on about the research
A. The purpose. B. The method C. The process. D. The findings.
34. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The resin. B. Self-medication. C. Cabreuva. D. A drugstore.
35. What is the possible significance of the discovery according to the text
A. Promoting evolution of creatures.
B. Contributing to forest conservation.
C. Developing new medicine from resin.
D. Motivating the study of monkeys’ health.

Time and money are life’s most valuable resources. One of the great laws of economics is that time equals money. The phrase “time is money” is usually credited to Benjamin Franklin, who used it in an essay (Advice to a Young Tradesman.1748) 36 He encouraged people to treat time like money. However, most people think about time and money in vastly different ways.
Time is our most scarce (稀缺) resource. Poor or rich, we all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 37 In a world of scarcity, choosing one thing means not being able to do something else.
38 Time is relatively scarce for people with higher incomes, partly because their time is more valuable. So, to have lots of time, rich people hire other people to do their household chores. However, a non-working person may spend more time on household chores.
Time cannot be stored. One of the reasons we give little thought about how we use our limited resources is that we cannot save time. Time moves on whether we choose to spend it or not. 39 However, when people are made aware of their mortality (生命的有限), they wonder if they did make the most of their lives.
In sum, time is anything but free. As a non-renewable resource, time is quite expensive. 40 They do their best to think of their time as unlimited, and unlimited goods have little value. Knowing that time is limited encourages us to ask how we are using our time. Do we want to spend these precious moments on social media or spend that time learning something new Skills and knowledge take time so the more time you spend on them, the more you improve.
A. It cannot be bought at any price.
B. It means time is a valuable resource.
C. The value of time varies from person to person.
D. Some people fail to realize that time is scarce
E. Thus, each of us faces the choice of how to spend our time.
F. You can’t bottle time and exchange it for an object or event.
G. Actually, time and money are greatly different from each other.

Today was Community Service Day at school. Maya’s class was going to make cards for the seniors living in a nursing home (养老院). It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace(腿支架) to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning, Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns. Still, she was unsure about others’ reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn’t say anything.
In the classroom, Maya was drawing pretty flowers when her friend Samir came over and sat by her. She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking, “What’s that for ” No knowing what to say, Maya pretended she didn’t hear him. After a few seconds of awkwardness, she glanced back at him, and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off. The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there happily along the path. Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in in a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and beautiful earrings. She looked bright and bright and full of life. Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir, she greeted first “I’m Joan,” she said cheerfully. “Glad to meet you.”
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made. Joan looked at Samir’s card carefully and spoke with admiration. “You’ve written a poem! That’s so artistic!” Samir’s face reddened with shyness. Then Joan turned to Maya’s picture. “The first flowers of spring!” she cried in delight. “You really have a gift for using colour!” she said. Clearly, Joan’s praise added great power into Maya.

Paragraph1:
In a sudden wave of bravery, Maya asked, “What’s it like being in a wheelchair ” Right after asking the question, an immediate sense of regret seized Maya. What if her words embarrassed Joan However, Joan said cheerfully, “It helps me get around. You’d be surprised at how fast I can go in this thing!” Right then, she moved the wheelchair across the room, turning around, back and forth. And what surprised Maya most was that she didn’t detect any pity or embarrassment from her. Then Maya found Joan was smiling, eyes purposefully resting on her brace. It was then that a spark of power was lit up deep inside Maya. That afternoon, the three of them had a pleasant talk.
Paragraph 2:
Deeply impressed by Joan, Maya offered to sit beside Samir on the bus ride back home. “Joan is great. I like her,” Samir admired. Maya nodded, lost in thought. With Joan’s wheelchair and smile in mind, she summoned up her courage to apologize for ignoring him in the morning and explained to him, “The brace keeps my toe up so I can walk better.” “Really ” Samir looked amazed, reached out and touched it gently. “That’s super cool!” His words were so sincere that Maya felt warm and moved. Though it was cold autumn outside, it felt like warm spring for Maya. A little green bud was bursting—she and her brace looked cool, beautiful and dynamic in her and others’ eyes.
