It’s tough enough to be a woman traveling alone, but one mom was especially nervous about taking a trip with her one-year-old. How would she manage in a strange place without her usual support network What about the dangers of solo(单独的) travel These were definitely reasonable concerns, but this mom found that people are sometimes kinder than you expect them to be.
In a video on social media, the woman recounted the many strangers who helped her while she was traveling alone. Keeping a toddler entertained during a long trip can be a challenge, so the mom was relieved when other travelers played with her son. One elderly man even held the little boy on his lap so that he could see out the window!
Obviously, the biggest concern for a woman traveling alone is safety. Luckily, this mom encountered some really sweet people who were happy to look out for her and her son. An Uber driver, for example, didn’t want these two to be stuck at the station late at night, so he let them stay in his car until their train arrived.
“Sometimes it’s not the village you bring with you; it’s the village you find along the way,” wrote the mom at the end of her post.
Many commenters said that seeing so many acts of kindness in one video filled them with hope! “You had 8 of the best possible human experiences in one trip,” wrote one user. Another added, “I’m moved by the humanity left in this world that surrounded you when you really needed it.”
It’s always important to exercise caution around strangers, especially when traveling alone as a woman. However, it’s heartwarming to see so many people willing to help a single mom get to her destination safely.

A. To guarantee their safety. B. To keep them warm.
C. To make friends with them. D. To remove their boredom.

A. An Adventurous Journey B. Careful Travel Tales
C. A Mom Going Popular Online D. Kindness All the Way Through

Google is considering charging for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search in what would be the biggest change of its business model since it was founded. The large search company, which is owned by Alphabet, has never before put any of its key products behind a paywall. However, bosses are considering charging for new advanced search features powered by AI.
The company is dealing with how to make use of the AI technology without threatening its advertising-funded business model. There are fears that the invention of AI chatbots(聊天机器人) will weaken search engines such as Google by allowing people to ask for the information they require rather than searching for it. This would rob(掠夺) Google of the valuable data it collects from users.
Its leaders are now reportedly weighing up whether to put AI-powered search features behind a paywall in a way that would allow it to take advantage of the new technology without competing with its core search engine. Alphabet is looking at putting AI-powered search into its advanced subscription services.
Engineers are reportedly developing the functionality needed for the changes but the leaders have not made a decision on whether or when to begin the plan. Under the plans being considered, Google’s search engine would remain free. A spokesman of Alphabet said: “We’re not working on or considering an ad-free search experience. We’ll go on building new capabilities and services to enhance our subscription offerings across Google.” The spokesman added: “For years, we’ve been reinventing Search to help people access information in the way that’s most natural to them. With our generative AI experiments in Search, we’ve already served billions of queries(询问). We will keep rapidly improving the product to serve new user needs.”
Last year, Google’s income from search and advertising made up more than half of its total sales. The company was caught flat-footed by the huge success of ChatGPT, which has been backed by its competitor Microsoft. Google launched its own AI chatbot, Gemini, in response but the technology received a lot of complaints for placing stress on diversity and harmless answers instead of accuracy. Later Google stopped the tool’s ability to draw pictures and apologized.
28. What is Alphabet’s main concern regarding AI chatbots
A. AI chatbots will give away users’ secrets.
B. Google will lose the chance to get users’ data.
C. Other search engines will replace Google.
D. The cost of its core product will increase.
29. What will Alphabet continue doing
A. Making its main product accessible to everyone.
B. Sharing AI technology with other technology companies.
C. Adding AI-powered search into its subscription services.
D. Improving its services to expand its subscription offerings.
30. What is people’s attitude towards Google’s Gemini
A. Mixed. B. Favorable. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
31. What is mainly talked about in the text
A. The competition among technology companies.
B. Google’s new search engine.
C. The importance of AI technology.
D. A change in Google’s business model.

Ever wondered why you performed worse than expected in that final university examination which you sat in a huge gymnasium or massive hall, despite countless hours, days and weeks of study Now you have a genuine reason—high ceilings. New research from the University of South Australia and Deakin University has revealed a link between rooms with high ceilings and poorer examination results.
Educational psychology researcher Dr. Bower from Deakin University demonstrated that building design impacts our ability to perform tasks. Dr. Bower and her team analyzed data from 15,400 undergraduate students between 2011 and 2019 across three campuses at an Australian university, comparing students’ examination results with the ceiling heights of the rooms in which they sat the examination. After considering individual student differences and their prior performance in coursework, they found that students had lower scores than expected when sitting examinations in rooms with a high ceiling.
The researchers factored in the students’ age, sex, the time of year when they sat the examination, and whether they had prior examination experience in the courses investigated. Researchers say it is difficult to identify whether this is due to the size of the room itself, or factors such as the number of students or poor insulation(隔热), which in turn lead to variable temperatures and air quality—all factors can affect both the brain and body.
“These spaces are often designed for purposes other than examinations, such as gymnasiums, exhibitions, events and performances,” Dr. Bower says. “The key point is that large rooms with high ceilings seem to disadvantage students and we need to understand what brain mechanisms(机制) are working, and whether this affects all students to the same degree.”
“In Australia, many universities and schools use large indoor spaces for examinations to simplify arrangements and costs. It’s crucial to recognize the potential impact of the physical environment on student performance and make necessary adjustments to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed,” she says.
32. What is the subject of the new research
A. Building height and test results.
B. Building size and students’ mood.
C. Study time and examination performance.
D. Class size and academic achievement.
33. How did the researchers draw their conclusions
A. By studying previous research. B. Through data analysis.
C. By doing experiments. D. Through online surveys.
34. What remains unknown to the researchers according to Dr. Bower
A. The specific brain mechanisms at play.
B. The students’ adaptation to the physical environment.
C. The reason for the difference in examination scores.
D. The role of room features like size and insulation.
35. What may Dr. Bower advise universities to do
A. Hold examinations at different spaces.
B. Investigate room size before designing examinations.
C. Limit the use of large spaces for examinations.
D. Standardize ceiling heights across the campus.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Human behaviors are often interconnected. For example, consider the case of a woman named Jennifer Dukes Lee. For ten years, she never made her bed except when her guests dropped by the house. Occasionally, she managed to make her bed four days in a row. On the morning of that fourth day, when she finished making the bed, she also folded a few clothes lying around the bedroom. Next, she found herself washing dirty dishes. 36 She was experiencing the Domino Effect(多米诺骨牌效应).
What is the Domino Effect The Domino Effect states that when you change one behavior, it will activate a chain reaction and cause a shift in related behaviors too. In the words of Stanford professor BJ Fogg, “You can never change just one behavior. 37 When you change one behavior, other behaviors also shift.”
The Domino Effect is not merely a phenomenon that happens to you. It is something you can create. 38 Here are three keys to making this work in real life:
Start with the thing you are most motivated to do. Start with a small behavior and do it consistently. This will not only make you feel satisfied, but also open your eyes to the type of person you can become. 39
Maintain momentum(动力) and immediately move to the next task you are motivated to finish. Let the momentum of finishing one task carry you directly into the next behavior. With each repetition, you will become more committed to your new self-image.
40 As you try new habits, focus on keeping them small and manageable. The Domino Effect is about progress, not results. Simply keep up the momentum. Let the process repeat as one domino automatically knocks down the next.
A. Celebrate your little progress.
B. Human behaviors are often tied to one another.
C. Break things down into smaller tasks when in doubt.
D. It doesn’t matter which domino falls first, as long as one falls.
E. This proves the role that creativity plays in the Domino Effect.
F. Her act of bed-making had set off a chain of small household tasks.
G. It is within your power to make a chain reaction of good habits happen.

Ali had always been a water enthusiast. From surfing the waves to snorkeling(浮潜) in the seas, her life centered on water sports. Two years ago, while vacationing in Turks and Caicos with her best friend, Ali’s passion took a terrifying turn.
The two friends were snorkeling near a coral reef when the unthinkable happened. Without warning, a shark appeared and began to attack them. They fought back, but pretty quickly, the shark had Ali’s leg in its mouth, and the next thing she knew was that the shark had bitten off her foot and part of her leg. With her friend’s help, she swam about 75 yards back to their snorkeling boat.
Once on the boat, her friend tied a tourniquet(止血带) on her leg to stop the bleeding. Emergency services arrived, and Ali was airlifted to a hospital for urgent surgeries, which saved her life. After the treatment, she was transferred to a hospital in New York to be closer to her family and friends. On her 23rd birthday, she underwent a trans-tibial amputation(胫骨截肢) of her left leg.
The period that followed was filled with darkness and despair. Despite the challenges, she chose to focus on what she still had rather than what she had lost. With determination, she began the tough process of adapting to life with an artificial leg.
Ali’s recovery was a long, rough road with many ups and downs. She overcame it with support from family and friends and a shift in her mindset, reminding herself that her challenges wouldn’t stop her from pursuing her passion. Her long-time coach helped her with tailored exercise routines, reigniting(使重燃) her love for water.
She set her sights on a new goal: competing in the women’s 400-meter freestyle race in her country’s biggest sports competition. The journey to the competition became a way to regain her passion and show her strength.

I am writing to share with you one of my interesting experiences. Last weekend, I, together with my parents, went to the local Harvest Festival, which was held to celebrate farmers’ harvests.
The festival was a mixture of colors, sounds and flavors. Stalls were filled with fresh produce, from plump tomatoes to golden com, and the air was full of the scent of delicious food being cooked. Traditional dancing and music added to the festive atmosphere.
Apart from celebrating the harvest, the festival also brought the community together. It was heartwarming to see people of all ages enjoying the festivities and sharing their pride in the local produce. It made me appreciate the hard work of farmers and the importance of community spirit.

She was determined to make her dream come true and to show everyone how strong she had become after her accident. As the big day drew near, her swimming skills improved greatly, and she felt more and more confident in the water with her artificial leg. Her journey from recovering to competing was an inspiring example of resilience and hope.

Each stroke felt powerful and smooth, as a result of her hard training. The cheers from the crowd and the support of her coach and friends pushed her forward. Touching the wall at the end of the race, Ali felt a deep sense of achievement, knowing she had overcome so many obstacles to reach this moment. All her hard work and perseverance paid off.
