Canary lslands, Spain//Carsten Peter
It's hard to capture the speed, texture, and sense of danger of lava flowing from a volcanic eruption, but that's what photographer Carsten Peter achieved with this image. He documented the 85-day eruption for National Geographic, then returned to focus on the damage and on the scientific fieldwork that had been done once the slow-moving lava had cooled.
Minneriya. Sri Lanka//Brent Stirton
Photographer Brent Stirton provided a window into these animals’ lives, which she hopes will increase awareness and stir up sympathy through the photo.
The image was tough to capture not only because Stirton need to get close to the wild animals for the frame but also because it was a challenging time to work in Sri Lanka. The government was collapsing in economic decline.“I think there's an opportunity to show people a side of animals they may have not seen before,” she says.

On September 7, 1991, the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history hit Calgary's southern suburbs. As a result, since 1996 a group of insurance companies have spent about $2 million per year on the Alberta Hail Suppression Project. Airplanes seed threatening storm cells with a chemical to make small ice crystals fall as rain before they can grow into dangerous hailstones. But farmers in east-central Alberta downwind of the hail project flights-worry that precious moisture is being stolen from their thirsty land by the cloud seeding.
Norman Stienwand, who farms in that area, has been addressing public meetings on this issue for years. “Basically, the provincial government is letting the insurance companies protect the Calgary-Edmonton urban area from hail,” Mr. Stienwand says, “but they're increasing drought risk as far east as Saskatchewan.”
The Alberta hail project is managed by TerryKrauss, a cloud physicist who works for Weather Modification Inc. of Fargo,North Dakota. “We affect only a very small percentage of the total moisture in the air, so we cannot be causing drought.” Dr. Krauss says. “In fact, we may be helping increase the moisture downwind by creating wetter ground.”
One doubter about the safety of cloud seeding is Chuck Doswell, a research scientist who just retired from the University of Oklahoma. “In 1999, I personally saw significant tornadoes form from a seeded storm cell in Kansas,” Dr. Doswell says. “Does cloud seeding create killer storms or course, but the seeding goes on.”
Given the degree of doubt, Mr.Stienwand suggests, “it would be wise to stop cloud seeding.” In practice, doubt has had the opposite effect. Due to the lack of scientific proof concerning their impacts, no one has succeeded in winning a lawsuit against cloud-seeding companies. Hence, private climate engineering can proceed in relative legal safety.
24 What does the project aim to do
A Conserve moisture in the soil.
B Prevent the formation of hailstones.
C Forecast disastrous hailstorms.
D Investigate chemical use in farming.
25 Who are opposed to the project
A Farmers in east-central Alberta.
B Managers of insurance companies.
C Provincial government officials.
D Residents of Calgary and Edmonton.
26 Why does Dr. Doswell mention the tornadoes he saw in 1999
A To compare different kinds of seeding methods.
B To illustrate the development of big hailstorms.
C To indicate a possible danger of cloud seeding.
D To show the link between storms and moisture.
27 What can we infer from the last paragraph
A Scientific studies have proved Stienwand right.
B Private climate engineering is illegal in Canada.
C The doubt about cloud seeding has disappeared.
D Cloud-seeding companies will continue to exist.

In the midst of an already record-breaking heat wave, Phoenix, Arizona, set a particularly eye-popping record: the temperature only dropped to 97 degrees Fahrenheit overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, setting an all-time record high for a nighttime low. When temperatures stay high overnight, they place a particularly heavy burden on the body, raising the risk of heat illness and death.
The US--and the world-has seen a spate of extreme heat so far this year, including the planet's hottest-ever June and hottest week on record during the first week of July. Rising global temperatures from burning fossil fuels are the main driver of more frequent and more intense heat waves. And an El Nino event is also boosting global temperatures this year.
A heat dome has been in place for weeks over the US Southwest and Texas, and it has fueled many heat records. Phoenix has now seen 20 days in a row with a daytime high of 110 degrees For higher, a record that is likely to continue for several more days. A heat dome is an area of high pressure that parks over a region. High-pressure ridges, as they also called, feature sinking air, which are compresses and heats up. These ridges’ typical clear skies also allow the sun's rays to beat down on the ground, further raising temperatures.
Prolonged heat extremes pose a major public health threat because heat is the number-one weather-related killer in the US; it causes more human deaths than hurricanes, tornadoes and floods combined. Heat can cause dehydration, which leads the blood to thicken and makes the heart pump harder. That organ and others can be damaged by too much exposure to heat.
The soaring, triple-digit high daily temperatures grab the headlines, and they definitely are a concern--but when temperatures only drop into the 80s and 90s at night, the body doesn't get a chance to cool down. This is particularly a concern for those who lack air-conditioning, including unhoused populations. And heat is especially a health risk for the very young, the elderly and those with preexisting health conditions such as asthma and heart disease.
28 What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A Extreme temperatures can cause damage to our hearts.
B Burning fossil fuels contributes to the hottest-ever June and July.
C El Nino is the dominant cause of soaring global temperature.
D The temperature at night has reached a record high in Phoenix,Arizona.
29 What is a heat dome according to the passage
A It's a weather phenomenon that contributes to high temperatures.
B It's a peak that the low pressure should reach.
C It's the damage caused by too much exposure to heat.
D It's the extra heat trapped in the sinking air.
30 According to the passage, what's the influence high overnight temperature has on humans
A It is the top one killer in America.
B Exposure to heat contributes to heart diseases.
C Human organs might be impaired.
D People accommodate to 80s and 90s Fahrenheit at night.
31 What's the passage mainly talking about
A Soaring temperatures are hitting the headlines.
B A new eye-popping overnight low record is set.
C Hot overnight temperatures threaten human health.
D Global heat waves are causing concerns.

A year after Walt Disney made history with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, his artists were struggling to find the right design for the woodland backgrounds of Bambi, the coming-of-age tale of a young deer. The film's production team realized they needed an alternative to the style in their first feature length animated film. Soon they got their inspiration from Tyrus Wong, whose work was on display at New York City's Museum of Chinese in American Wong, an immigrant from Taishan,China, arrived in California at 9 with his father in 1919.Wong eventually settled near Los Angeles, where he developed his passions for art and drawing and got trained at the Otis Art Institute.
In 1938, The Walt Disney Studio hired him to draw the frames between the main drawings of the animators. Wong soon learned that the studio was trying to turn Felix Salten's novel Bambi into an animated film. After reading the story, he saw an opportunity to break out of his boring job.
Inspired by Chinese landscape paintings, he used watercolor and crayons that created the forest scenes with simple strokes of color and special attention to light and shadow.Wong's skills caught Disney's eye and became the guide for Bambi's background artists, who were later trained to mimic his style.
By the time Bambi hit theaters in 1942, a strike at The Walt Disney Studio had left Wong jobless after three years of working on the project. He later became an illustrator for Warer Bros, where he worked for more than two decades.
“People admire his work because of Bambi, but Bambi was just a really small part of his art life," said Wong's youngest daughter. “ He considers himself not a great artist but a lucky artist, who was at the right place at the right time."
32 Why did Tyrus Wong catch the attention of The Walt Disney Studio
A His painting style fitted Bambi.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Watching a movie can be a magical experience, but do you know that the music in the films we watch has always been an important part of creating that magical experience 36__________
The first commercial film with sound came out in 1927. 37__________ Even back in the early days of silent films, most movie theaters hired a musician or a group of musicians to provide music, mostly to drown out the sound of the film projectors and people talking.
As sound-on-film technology developed, composers were hired to create original music for films. Like music written for an opera, film music serves to advance the story and the action.38__________ In the same way, a film composer needs to support the screenplay's storyline. The music also needs to reflect the screenplay's mood, which includes everything from the action on the screen to sound
effects to dialogue.
Music has a language of its own. The right piece of music can improve and sometimes even change a viewer's ideas of what is taking place onscreen. Most of the time, music is used to stress the action onscreen, improve the mood of a scene, foreshadow action that is about to take place or even show the emotion of a character.39__________But in many instances the emotional power of the visuals would not be as great were it not for the music.
40__________Ask yourself,“How would this scene feel if the music were different Is the composer trying to tell me how I should feel Or are they merely pushing me in an emotional direction ”
A So, how is the film music created
B Without it, it would be hard to imagine the scene.
C An opera composer must follow the text of the opera.
D Usually, composers and filmmakers don't want to overshadow a film.
E So the next time you watch a movie, pay close attention to the music.
F The music in a film makes you cheer for the her and cry at the drama.
G Since then, music has been powerfully linked to the movie-watching experience.

I remember a time when I learned the true meaning of forgiveness. It was a period in my life that tested my patience and my ability to understand others.
It all started when I was in middle school. I had a close friend named Emily, and we spent a lot of time together. One day, Emily introduced me to a new girl in our class, named Olivia. Olivia was quiet and shy, but we quickly became friends as well.
One afternoon, after school, we were all working on a project in the classroom. As we were discussing our ideas, Olivia suddenly exclaimed out something that completely contradicted what I had been saying. I was shocked and felt a little embarrassed. I tried to explain my point of view, but Olivia was very stubborn and insisted on her own idea.
Emily, who was sitting next to me, tried to mediate (调节) the situation. But Olivia got angry and said some unkind words to me. I was hurt and angry, and I couldn’t believe that Olivia would treat me like that. I stormed out of the classroom, leaving Emily and Olivia behind.
The next few days were very difficult for me. I avoided Olivia as much as possible, and our friendship with Emily seemed to be stressed. I felt like I had been betrayed by Olivia, and I couldn’t understand why she would do such a thing.
One day, I asked Emily why she was still friends with Olivia after what she had done. Emily looked at me with a sad expression and said, “You know, Olivia has been through a lot lately. Her parents are going through a divorce, and she’s really struggling. Maybe she was rude to you because she was feeling overwhelmed and insecure.”
Hearing this, I felt a surge of guilt. I realized that I hadn’t taken the time to understand Olivia’s situation. I had been too quick to judge her and too focused on my own feelings of hurt. I decided to talk to Olivia and apologize for my behavior.
