Human activities are changing the surface and the temperature of the planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of the Earth’s oceans.
Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans and other waters influence many animals-from very small fish to huge whales. Sound travels very far underwater. Li Yongzeng is a Chinese railway engineer. In his life, one thing always makes him feel proud. It is helping build the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (坦赞铁路). The railway is a symbol of the China-Africa friendship. His grandson, Li Shangyi is following in his footsteps and doing his part for the China-Africa friendship.
To build Tanzania-Zambia Railway, Li Yongzeng and 100 other workers left China for Tanzania in December 1970. Building the Tanzania-Zambia Railway was not an easy thing. It needed to cross mountains, valleys (山谷), rivers and forests in both Tanzania and Zambia. In many areas, there were no people but there were many wild animals. The workers often worked as they moved along the railway line. They could only live and eat outside.
The Tanzania-Zambia Railway is 1,860 kilometers long. It has 320 bridges, 22 tunnels (隧道) and 147 stations along the line. It took five years to completo the rallway. China sent over 50,000 workers in total. The railway is now considered a monument to the brotherhood between China and Affica.
In 2015, Li Shangyi went to work in Tanzania. During his time there he learned how important China’s help isfor T’anznnin and Zambin. In July 2017, Li Shangyi’s compan) plaaned to help 10,000 African villages have satellite TVs (卫星电视). And he personally needed to help 500 villages to get satellite TVs in Malawi.
