Scientists have created a new tool that can turn people’s thoughts into words. It works by using
an AI system(系统 ) to change brain activity into words. The scientists say the system could help
people who can’t speak because of a brain injury(损伤).
The new way was developed by a team of scientists at the University of Texas at Austin (UT).
The tool has two main parts. The first is a scanner(扫描设备) that allowed the scientists to record
brain activity. The second is an AI system that the scientists trained to turn data(数据 ) of brain
activity into words.
To record brain activity without surgery(外科手术), the scientists used a big machine called an
fMRI machine. The fMRI machine uses strong magnetic fields (磁场 ) and radio waves to create
pictures showing which parts of the brain are active. The fMRI machine can record the activity of
the brain as it happens.
The testing of the AI system was done on three human volunteers. Each person spent sixteen
hours in an fMRI machine listening to stories. The people imagined the stories as they heard them,
and the fMRI machine recorded their brain activity.
九年级英语·第 3页(共 8页)
The scientists also tested their system when the people imagined their own stories. This didn’t
work as well as the stories people heard, but it still worked. Finally, the scientists showed the people
silent movies, with no spoken words at all. The system could still find out the basic ideas.
The scientists say that this is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words
without brain surgery. The system isn’t something that can be easily used today, mainly because of
the size and cost of fMRI machines.

A. What the fMRI machine is.
B. Where the fMRI machine is.

Leaf-cutting art is a kind of art work, like Chinese paper cutting.
In autumn and winter, many streets are covered with fallen leaves. Most of us probably just
pass over them without paying much attention, but not Kanat Nurtazin, an artist from Kazakhstan.
Do you know what he will do He will pick up some fallen leaves and cut beautiful artworks out of
them.
Kanat works at a university. He has kept drawing as a hobby to stay creative since 2013. This
long-time hobby has also allowed him to express himself through art and made him popular. What a
meaningful hobby it was!
In 2013, Kanat started a project(项目) called “100 Methods(方法) of Drawing”. In this project,
he tries to use different materials and skills for artworks. Among all these creative paintings,
leaf-cutting art is one of his favorites. To make leaf art, Kanat first chooses a leaf from his collection.
Then, he simply imagines a funny story or a lively moment. He draws it on a piece of paper and
sticks(粘贴) the paper to the leaf. After the glue dries, Kanat uses a razor (剃须刀) to cut out the
pattern on the leaf. This job needs the most time of all the work.
A leaf’s life is short. If you look at it with your creative eyes, like Kanat does, you can also give
the leaf a second life by making it tell an interesting story!

参考答案
My Favorite Chinese Festival
As we all know, there are many traditional festivals in China. Among them, I like the Spring
Festival best.
It comes in January or February. It is a wonderful time when family and friends come together
to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one. People sweep out dust from their houses,
hang couplets, set off fireworks, and enjoy lion or dragon dances. On the eve of the Spring Festival,
people try to return home and enjoy family dinner. Grandparents, parents, and children gather to eat
different kinds of delicious food, such as dumplings and fish. They express best wishes for the whole
family.
The Spring Festival is important for Chinese. It is filled with the warmth of family love and the
joy of reunion. It also brings us a strong feeling of happiness. That’s the reason why I love it.
