By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled“Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That's when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi-page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it'd be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists, "says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special:“a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled“Pokemon”.
As Nalin was busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he's still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.

Australia officially listed koalas (考拉) across its eastern coast as“endangered” on Friday. Conservationists said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala, a globally recognized symbol of Australia’ s unique wildlife, had been listed as“vulnerable (易受伤害的)” on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented(史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus $50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas’ new status but blamed Australia’ s failure to protect the species so far.“Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said Stuart Blanch, a WWF-Australia conservation scientist. “Today’ s decision is welcome, but it won’ t stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it's accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can't afford any more clearing,” she said. “The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added, “we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging(伐木).”
Australia’ s koalas had been living on a“knife edge” even before the“Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon,” Sharrad said. “The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing, and seriously deal with the impacts of climate change.
18. Why did environmentalists welcome the koalas' new status
A. This would stop koalas from extinction.
B. They may have time to recover koala habitats.
C. They could blame the government's failure.
D. This could lead to action to protect koalas.
19. What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A. The koalas' new status was not welcomed.
B. Australian government should be blamed.
C. Australia hasn't been successful in protecting the species.
D. Koalas will no longer be in danger.
20. How does Sharrad feel about the present state of Koalas'
A. Frightened. B. Concerned. C. Disappointed. D. Satisfied.
21. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Australia Lists Koalas as Endangered
B. Koalas Will Live on a Knife Edge
C. Koalas: Australia's National Icon
D. Bushfires: Koala Killers in Australia
D
In the coming decade, space agencies and private space companies like SpaceX are planning to build a base on the Moon and Mars. While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrogen(氢). But a group of scientists is working on turning CO in the atmosphere into jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO , it may be a feasible solution.
For now the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO every year, to battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.
The concept of turning CO into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely on expensive catalysts(催化剂) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO into liquid fuel. As the process would not require using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbon neutral(碳中和的).
The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO into new chemicals. About 48 percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in the production of plastic.
Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO collected can be used as an energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”
22. Which word can best explain“feasible” underlined in paragraph 1
A. Unique. B. Practical. C. Time-tested. D. Quick.
23. What problem does the aviation industry face
A. It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage.
B. The traditional jet fuel is much too expensive.
C. Climate change partly disturbs long-distance flights.
D. Its alternative energy resources are not powerful enough.
24. What do we know about the Oxford scientists' method of fuel-making:
A. It is green and cost-saving.
B. It is complex and time-consuming.
C. It runs tests in natural environment.
D. It starts with immediate chemical reaction.
25. What's the purpose of the author
A. To attract people to explore the space.
B. To inform us of a breakthrough in fuel research.
C. To warn us the dangers of climate change.
D. To encourage us to work in the aviation industry.

One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you OK ”“Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal(燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothing inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said“START”. Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

读后续写参考范文
But he remembered there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. “Where did it come from ” Jeremy wondered, reaching into the washer to take out more clothes. Then much to his astonishment, he pulled out two T-shirts, both in light pink. Realizing there was something wrong, Jeremy stood frozen, his heart sinking. While racking his brain for reasons, he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for the accident. With no means of handling the situation, Jeremy was in such a panic that he even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. “That isn't a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally, he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Holding the neatly folded pink dress, Jeremy nervously knocked at his mom's bedroom door again. After what seemed like ages, he came to the bedside, his head drooping. Sensing his son's unease, his mother inquired with concern what was wrong. “Sorry mom,I shouldn't have ruined your favorite dress.” Jeremy apologized. Stuttering out the mistake he had made, he was ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what's going on, mom smiled understandingly at Jeremy, “Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help.” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone, “You know what I think it looks nice.” At this Jeremy beamed with relief, making a silent vow to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.
