Many people enjoy seeing busy little squirrels running around a park. It might surprise you, then, to learn that some squirrels are in danger. Without protection, you may not see the UK’s red squirrels in just ten years.
The main reason is that people brought gray squirrels to the UK in the 1890s. They are larger and longer. They are also better at competing for food and space than red squirrels. As a result, the country’s red squirrels are hard to survive.
Another problem is that gray squirrels have brought with them the squirrel pox virus (松鼠痘病毒). They can carry this virus without any influences (影响) on themselves, but it kills red squirrels. Animals scientists are worried that these problems are having a serious influence.
People in the UK love their red squirrels, so they are doing their best to save them. They came up with a few ideas. One is to stop the gray squirrels from having more babies. When Ben Cheng, 63, finished a bicycle journey along the ancient Silk Road in June, she immediately began planning her next trip. Ben was a teacher who comes from Changchun, Jilin Province. She has cycled more than 100,000 kilometers over the last eight years.
“I have kept up all kinds of sports, such as swimming and mountain climbing, for many years,” she said. “After retirement (退休), I had more time for my interests and I found cycling to be a good choice.”
She began cycling in the Changchun suburbs (郊区) in 2013 after her retirement at 55. In May 2015, she started her first long journey—a trip around Bohai Bay. It took her 24 days to complete the 2,655—kilometer trip, and the success pushed her to do more.

16-year-old Yang Jun’ao, a student from No.1 Middle School in Nanxian County, Hunan Province, invented a robot to help harvest lotus roots (采藕).
“I got the idea when I saw my grandmother, in her 70s, working hard to harvest lotus roots under the hot sun,” Yang said. Sometimes, his grandmother would badly hurt her fingers while using harvesting tools.
To make things easier for his grandmother, he decided to invent a robot that could do the job for her.
With the help of his teacher, Hong Wei, Yang spent almost a year building a model of the robot. The robot can move by itself in the muddy (泥泞的) fields where lotus roots grow. It uses special technology to identify ripe roots by looking at the color of the lotus leaves. Then, its arm carefully cuts the roots without harming them.
While creating the robot, Yang faced challenges like collecting parts for the model, putting them together and using a hot glue gun for connecting. “The first time I used a hot glue gun, my hands were shaking,” Yang laughed. At first, he planned to use rotating blades (旋转叶片) for harvesting lotus roots. But it was hard to find them, so he used more common blades instead.
When Yang showed the robot to his grandmother, she was happy and gave helpful suggestions for improvement. She suggested using a voice player to help locate the robot in thick lotus leaves. “My grandmother’s suggestion reminded me that any invention must be practical to be truly valuable.” said Yang.
Although Yang still needs to make improvements, like finding cheaper materials, his teacher Hong spoke highly of Yang’s creative thinking and resolution to help his hometown.
