The castle was said (据说) to be the model for (……的原型) the one in the Disney film Sleeping Beauty. This will be the first of two castles that we’re visiting in Germany.
Frankenstein Castle, Darmstadt (Germany)
This castle has no connection (关系) to the writer Mary Shelly or her novel Frankenstein. Reiz von Breuberg built the original (起初的) castle in the early part of the 13th century. Reiz von Breuberg changed his name to Frankenstein in the early part of the 13th century, and this is why people called it Frankenstein Castle. We’re going to spend the night in a village right next to the castle.

The camel (骆驼) is one of the most interesting animals in the world. Camels are big. They are about 6 to 7 feet high and they can run up to 40 miles per hour. They are called the ship of the desert (沙漠) because they can live in the desert without food and water for six to ten days, taking people and things.
A camel’s body is right for desert life. A camel has special feet helping it walk in the desert. To fight with blowing sand, a camel’s ears have fur (毛皮). Its long eyelashes (眼睫毛) protect its eyes.
On a desert trip, a camel can live on little food and water. Its special body part keeps fat so it can go without eating for days. A camel can lose as much as a fourth of its body weight (重量) without getting sick. Also, its body temperature can go up by more than 10°F before it has sweat (汗). In this way, the camel doesn’t lose as much water from sweat as a horse or a person would. When the weather is cool, camels can go for as long as several months without water. During the summer, when temperatures are higher, they can live without water for up to ten days.
To become fresh from a long desert trip, a camel drinks as much as 21 gallons of water in ten minutes. Drinking that much water so quickly might kill any other animal. But too much water or too little doesn’t hurt a camel. After a few days’ rest, the camel is ready to cross the desert again!

Derrick Downey was relaxing on his balcony in Los Angeles when a squirrel suddenly appeared. One day the King invited me to watch the regular entertainments, which are greatly enjoyed by him, his family, and his lords and ladies. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. As the old saying in Xunpu, Fujian Province goes, “Put flowers in your hair this life and you’ll also be pretty in the afterlife.”
In the past, all the women in the small fishing village (乡村) had long hair, and they put colorful flower headdresses (头饰) on their heads. The headdress is known as zanhua or zanhuawei. In 2008, it was listed as national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
As a child, Huang Rongbing watched his mother, Weng Xiuzhen, comb (梳理) her long and thick hair every day. “After making a bun (圆发髻) at the back of her head, she put colorful flowers into her hair,” the 34 year-old said.
In 2016, Huang and his elder sister opened a salon (美发厅). There, visitors can get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos taken. Now, there are over 200 similar (相似的) businesses in the centuries-old village. People flood into Xunpu for zanhua. They love matching it with Chinese-style clothes such as qipao and mamianqun.
The increase (增加) in the number of tourists brings joy to Huang. It not only keeps the business busy but also helps spread the history and culture behind the headdress.
Huang said the women of Xunpu are hard-working, warm-hearted and brave. “When they put zanhua on their heads, they express their wish for happiness.” he added.

There are many ways to travel (旅行) in a city. We can walk, ride a bicycle, or take a bus. But we have to follow the route (路线) that the city made for us.
To parkour practitioners (跑酷爱好者), however, there are no routes. There are no walls and no stairs—since they can run, jump or climb to move across. The city is their sports center.

Day 1
