应用文
Yesterday afternoon,I visited an art exhibition with a theme of traditional Chinese paintings in the hall on the second floor of the school library.
The exhibition opens from 3:00 to 5:00 every afternoon this month. A huge number of Chinese paintings by students are on display, among which are paintings of birds, flowers, shrimps and so on. They are so vivid that I could hardly tell whether they are living or just painted. Not only does the exhibition widen my knowledge about Chinese culture, but also it enriches my after-class life.
If you want to have a better understanding of Chinese culture, grasp this opportunity without hesitation.
读后续写
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritated while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself,"If I am in old age, how will my son look at me Will he think of me as a burden Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding ”
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud,"I promise to let you feel happy forever,Dad.It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering me with your selfless affection. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way."

B
I didn’t go to Santiago, Chile to look for friendship. In fact, Chile was not even on my wish list.
A mid-life crisis woman, I got a chance to study abroad. I only wanted to learn about global business, taste South American cuisine, and check “study abroad” off my wish list.
On the fifth day, I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty (扶贫) organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center. Upon arrival, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like a scene out of a horrible film. That moment redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions. As advised, I showed no signs of the emotional battle going on inside me.
Just as I was about to start work on painting, a request came through for a few volunteers to help Nadia, a local resident who volunteered to cook for us. I raised my hand to help because I wanted to spend time with the people of the neighbourhood despite my shortage of Spanish speaking skills.
Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly. Even without speaking each other’s language, we started to learn about one another. We chatted about our children, our upbringing, shared pictures of our family, struggled to instruct each other to communicate in the other’s language, and laughed many times.
After we fed everybody and the dished were washed, my day was over. But I found myself hesitant to leave. It was as if I had known her my entire life. I had not predicted the unselfishness of heart I would encounter, and it was moving.
As we were waiting for the car to pick us up, Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintained. I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life. She made me long to be a stronger person. She showed me that poverty was external, but happiness was internal. I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause, but I left receiving 200 percent from her.
What was the author’s initial purpose of going to Chile
To find new friends while traveling.
To participate in an anti-poverty project.
To fulfill the desire to study abroad.
To gain a graduate certificate in business.
What did the author do after seeing the living conditions in the neighbourhood?
She decided to relieve the poverty.
She kept her emotions well hidden.
She comforted the shocked volunteers.
She refused to continue the present task.
Why did the author volunteer to work with Nadia
She felt very sympathetic toward Nadia.
She longed to interact with the local residents.
She wanted to improve her Spanish speaking skills.
She preferred cooking to painting the community center.
What did the author learn from Nadia
True friends are never apart in heart.
Happiness is defined by a positive attitude.
Language is not a barrier to great connections.
Unselfishness is putting others before ourselves.
C
The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Person in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.
Many Native Americans value science and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied (暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
What does the author say about silence in conversations
It implies anger. B. It promotes friendship.
C. It is content-based. D. It is culture-specific.
Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought
The Russians. B. The French. C. The Mexicans. D. The Chinese.
What does the author advise nurses to do about silence
Make use of its healing effects. B. Break it while training patients.
C. Evaluate its harm to patients. D. Let is continue as the patient pleases.
What may be the best title for the text
Sound and Silence. B. What It Means to Be Silent.
C. Silence to Native Americans. D. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold.

When Hurricane Ian made landfall on the southwest Florida coast as a Category 4 storm, it brought strong winds and heavy rain.It was a deadly hurricane, attacking more than four million people, and causing serious flooding and at least 150 deaths. However, during the disaster, there was one innovative community that weathered the storm well: Ranch, the brainchild of Syd Kitson.
Located 30 miles inland, Babcock Ranch is an environmentally friendly and fully sustainable town that Syd Kitson and his partners hoped would be hurricane proof. Its homes are built to go through severe weather without losing essential services like electricity, water,or the Internet. A significant factor in its design is that power and Internet lines are buried to avoid wind damage. Additionally, large ponds surround the development to protect houses from flooding. As a backup, streets are designed to absorb floodwaters and spare the houses.
Central to Babcock Ranch's sustainability is its extensive use of solar energy. The community possesses an 870-acre solar farm with 700 000 individual panels operated by Florida Power Light, capable of powering 30 000 homes-far more than the 5 000 residents currently living there. At night and on cloudy days,a natural gas generator kicks in to fill the gap.
Hurricane Ian served as a true test for the community. While the surrounding regions suffered, Babcock Ranch's minimum damage and quick recovery showcased its effective design against natural disasters. Residents even opened their community center, doubling as a storm shelter, to the victims from other hard-hit communities.
Kitson's vision for Babcock Ranch is not just about creating a sustainable and resilient(适应性强的) community but also about learning and improving. He hopes that the lessons learned from Babcock Ranch can be applied to other developments, contributing to more climate-resilient communities across the United States. This approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for sustainable and resilient urban planning in the face of increasing climate challenges.
What does the underlined word “weathered” in Paragraph 1 mean
Predicted. B. Changed. C. Survived. D. Ignored.
What do we know about Babcock Ranch from the text
Its streets allow houses the capability to take in floodwaters.
Its design guarantees availability of power in the hurricane.
Its solar farm lacks the ability of producing sufficient power.
Its main source of electricity supply is provided by natural gas.
What is the central theme of the fourth paragraph
Babcock Ranch’s community and social life.
Babcock Ranch’s future expansion strategies.
Babcock Rach’s novel technological innovations.
Babcock Rach’s resistance to natural disasters.

I didn’t go to Santiago, Chile to look for friendship. In fact, Chile was not even on my wish
list.
A mid-life crisis woman, I got a chance to study abroad. I only wanted to learn about global
business, taste South American cuisine, and check “study abroad” off my wish list.
On the fifth day, I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty
(扶贫) organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center. Upon
arrival, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like a scene out of a horrible film. That moment
redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions. As advised, I
showed no signs of the emotional battle going on inside me.
Just as I was about to start work on painting, a request came through for a few volunteers to
help Nadia, a local resident who volunteered to cook for us. I raised my hand to help because I
wanted to spend time with the people of the neighbourhood despite my shortage of Spanish
speaking skills.
Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly. Even without speaking each other’s
language, we started to learn about one another. We chatted about our children, our upbringing,
shared pictures of our family, struggled to instruct each other to communicate in the other’s
language, and laughed many times.
After we fed everybody and the dished were washed, my day was over. But I found myself
hesitant to leave. It was as if I had known her my entire life. I had not predicted the unselfishness
of heart I would encounter, and it was moving.
As we were waiting for the car to pick us up, Nadia showed me her plants that are
well-maintained. I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life. She
made me long to be a stronger person. She showed me that poverty was external, but happiness

was internal. I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause, but I left receiving
200 percent from her.

A. True friends are never apart in heart.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they
may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show
stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely
uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Person in
other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.
Many Native Americans value science and feel it is a basic part of communicating among
people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one
of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied (暗示) is that the person
wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a
call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among
people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian,
French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic
under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in
authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use,
persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person
in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they
come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize
4
{#{QQABDQCQggiAAABAARhCAwmiCkOQkgCAAagOREAEsAAAiBNABAA=}#}
their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted
too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of
silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other
cultures.
28. What does the author say about silence in conversations
A. It implies anger. B. It promotes friendship.
C. It is content-based. D. It is culture-specific.
29. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought
A. The Russians. B. The French. C. The Mexicans. D. The Chinese.
30. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence
A. Make use of its healing effects. B. Break it while training patients.
C. Evaluate its harm to patients. D. Let is continue as the patient pleases.
31. What may be the best title for the text
A. Sound and Silence. B. What It Means to Be Silent.
C. Silence to Native Americans. D. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold.

When Hurricane Ian made landfall on the southwest Florida coast as a Category 4 storm, it
brought strong winds and heavy rain.It was a deadly hurricane, attacking more than four million
people, and causing serious flooding and at least 150 deaths. However, during the disaster, there
was one innovative community that weathered the storm well: Ranch, the brainchild of Syd
Kitson.
Located 30 miles inland, Babcock Ranch is an environmentally friendly and fully sustainable
town that Syd Kitson and his partners hoped would be hurricane proof. Its homes are built to go
through severe weather without losing essential services like electricity, water,or the Internet. A
significant factor in its design is that power and Internet lines are buried to avoid wind damage.
Additionally, large ponds surround the development to protect houses from flooding. As a backup,
streets are designed to absorb floodwaters and spare the houses.
Central to Babcock Ranch's sustainability is its extensive use of solar energy. The community
possesses an 870-acre solar farm with 700 000 individual panels operated by Florida Power Light,
capable of powering 30 000 homes-far more than the 5 000 residents currently living there. At
night and on cloudy days,a natural gas generator kicks in to fill the gap.
Hurricane Ian served as a true test for the community. While the surrounding regions suffered,
Babcock Ranch's minimum damage and quick recovery showcased its effective design against
natural disasters. Residents even opened their community center, doubling as a storm shelter, to
the victims from other hard-hit communities.
Kitson's vision for Babcock Ranch is not just about creating a sustainable and resilient(适应
性强的 ) community but also about learning and improving. He hopes that the lessons learned
from Babcock Ranch can be applied to other developments, contributing to more climate-resilient
communities across the United States. This approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for
sustainable and resilient urban planning in the face of increasing climate challenges.

应用文
Yesterday afternoon,I visited an art exhibition with a theme of traditional Chinese paintings in the hall
on the second floor of the school library.
The exhibition opens from 3:00 to 5:00 every afternoon this month. A huge number of Chinese
paintings by students are on display, among which are paintings of birds, flowers, shrimps and so on. They
are so vivid that I could hardly tell whether they are living or just painted. Not only does the exhibition widen
my knowledge about Chinese culture, but also it enriches my after-class life.
If you want to have a better understanding of Chinese culture, grasp this opportunity without hesitation.
读后续写
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to
sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling
irritated while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself,"If I am in
old age, how will my son look at me Will he think of me as a burden Will he shout at me because of my
poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding ”
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his
father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud,"I promise to let you feel happy
forever,Dad.It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering me with your selfless
affection. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the
best way."

M: Once again we’re holding our popular photography competition for children. It’s open to all children
between 8 and 12 who have an interest in photography. We’re not looking for special technical skills—just
the imagination to take a good picture. Last year, the topic for our competition was wildlife and we received
many excellent photos. This year, we’d like your photos to be on the subject of the sea. This is the only
requirement. It doesn’t matter whether your photo is in color or black and white. The size of the photos was
limited to 17cm long and 12cm wide last year, but there’s no limit on that this year. A team of professional
photographers will judge the photos and they’ll choose the four that they think show the most promise. The
winner will receive a camera, while the second prize will be free photography lessons. Those in third and
fourth place will receive a photography book. If you’re interested, we’d like you to post your photos to us
here at Star Radio, 24 Woodstock Square, London. Your photos need to reach us by the 10th of August so
you have a few weeks before the closing date. The results of the competition will be announced on this
program on the 15th. There will be a chance to see all the photographs into the competition at an exhibition
at the museum. This will start on the 20th of August and stay open until 27th.
