Every scar (伤疤) on our body tells a different story about who we are. I find it funny when people are mad at the scars they have on their bodies. To me, scars shine a light on who a person truly is. I have many stories to tell about my scars. Of course, I’ve got the usual kind that everyone has from when they were little kids, like the ones on my knees. But I also have the kind of scars that tell more valuable stories.
I was diagnosed (诊断) with several illnesses before I was born. Ten days after I was born, I had my first surgery (外科手术), getting my first of many scars. I consider myself to be quite different because very few people have the same scar as I do. Then, after several more months of going in and out of the hospital, I received my biggest and most meaningful scar from a six-hour open-heart surgery. This one runs all the way down my stomach. The heart is a symbol of love, so I see this scar as a symbol of my ability to love and perseverance (毅力).
Today, I am completely healthy. My heart condition does not prevent my abilities in any way. I am really proud of my scars. I have them as medals of courage and survival (幸存) as well as conversation starters. I often feel angry when people complain about their scars. I wonder why they would want to hide their best stories.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

①Nowadays, some calligraphers (书法家) are marrying modern technology with ancient writing art to let young people love it.
②Chang Pinghuang is a teacher of Chinese language at Tamkang University. He found that his students liked to spend much more time on computers and phones than writing on paper, and even less time on calligraphy.

Millions of foreigners like Baobaoxiong are visiting China and posting their travel videos. The visa-free transit policy(过境免签政策) plays an important role in this trend( 潮 流 ). The policy started in 2013. Back then, it allowed travelers to stay for 72 hours in seven different big cities in China. Now, travelers can stay for 144 hours without a visa as long as they have a travel document and a connecting ticket to leave. It has attracted more travelers to China. In the first three months of this year, 266 percent more foreigners came to China compared with the same period last year.
Seeing is believing. Through this policy, more and more people get to see the real China. “This is the whole reason why we decided to come to China—to see exactly what China is like in person,” said Irish YouTuber Luke in his online video. He thought Chengdu was “incredibly (难以置信地）good, beautiful and modern”, totally different from what he had heard about China from Western media.
Yuyuantantian, a new media account under China Media Group, looked at 100 China travel videos made by foreigners. It found foreigners used to visit famous spots like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.
