The warmth of the family gathering has always been a beacon (灯塔) in my life, a constant source of strength and happiness. Those moments, full of love and laughter, have shaped who I am today and continue to influence my outlook on life. The power of togetherness is a lesson I learned early on, and it’s a principle I carry with me every day.
When we were growing up, our family had a valuable tradition that filled our lives with joy and anticipation. Every Saturday evening, we would set off to visit our extended family, and the excitement was obvious. The pleasant smell of freshly baked goods would waft through the air, signaling our approach to Aunt Lucille’s warm and welcome home . As the famous biscuits attracted us, my sister and I, unable to contain our excitement, would repeatedly ask, “Are we there yet ”
At home, we were accustomed to sandwiches, but Aunt Lucille’s biscuits were a different kind of glee. After eating every last biscuit, we came to the backyard where the night sky unfolded above us. There, we gathered around, drinking sweet tea, as the melodic sound of guitars by Henri and Beau created a symphony that resonated with the
love and unity of our family. These evenings were more than just a break from the routine; they were a celebration of our bond.
As the years went by, these gatherings became a place where we could escape the worries of the world and simply be with one another. The stories shared, the laughter, and the quiet moments of connection have left an indelible mark on my heart. They have taught me the importance of cherishing the time we have with our loved ones, for these are the moments that truly matter in life. The impact of these family times is great and I will always cherish it and try my best to pass it on to future generations.
24. What is mentioned about the family gathering in paragraph 1
A. Its process. B. Its significance. C. Its reasons. D. Its contents.
25. How did the author feel when going to Aunt Lucille’s home
A. Nervous. B. Hungry. C. Angry. D. Excited.
26. What does the underlined word “glee” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Pleasure. B. Training. C. Health. D. Method.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Joy of Saturday Evenings B. The Influence of Childhood Life
C. The Origin of Family Traditions D. The Bright Light of Family Gatherings
C
Animals have developed many impressive skills to sleep under tough conditions. Some seals sleep while they hunt on the sea floor. Frigate birds sleep in the air during long flights. Now, a new study finds that reindeer (驯鹿) can sleep while eating.
Reindeer live in the far North. There, the sun can shine around the clock in summer and food is plentiful. Reindeer get busy eating it and chewing (咀嚼) the cud (反刍的食物). Finding time to sleep among all the cud chewing might be tough. But what if the reindeer could sleep as they chew To check this, neuroscientist Melanie Furrer and chronobiologist Sara Meier stuck electrodes on reindeer.
Electrodes detected brain waves typical of non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep when the reindeer were chewing cud. The reindeer’s chewing motion made it hard to tell whether the signal was like that of regular sleep. “We couldn’t go into detail by looking only at the brain waves, because this chewing disturbs them,” says Furrer.
Other signs, however, helped confirm the reindeer really were asleep. “For one thing, the reindeer were calm while chewing. In fact, they often had their eyes closed. They were in a very relaxed state that resembles the body position of non-REM sleep,” Furrer notes.
Chewing reindeer were also harder to disturb. They were less likely to look over at noise made by a nearby reindeer. Plus, when the reindeer were kept awake, they needed catch-up recovery sleep. But time spent chewing decreased how much time they spent in recovery sleep.
Together, these evidences show that reindeer can sleep while chewing, says neurobiologist Niels Rattenborg. Some animals, such as dolphins, sleep with only one side of their brain at a time. But reindeer seem to sleep with both sides of their brains while chewing. “Studying various forms of sleep might lead to insights on sleep walking in people,” Rattenborg says. “This is a poorly understood and potentially dangerous sleep disorder.”
28. How does the text introduce its topic
A. By making contrasts. B. By giving examples.
C. By discussing issues. D. By interpreting reasons.
29. Why do reindeer sleep while eating according to the text
A. They have a little food. B. They save time to observe.
C. They have no time to sleep. D. They have difficulty in sleeping.
30. What does Furrer think can prove reindeer are sleeping
A. Their brain waves. B. Their relaxed state.
C. Their chewing motion. D. Their eye movement.
31. What do Rattenborg’s words stress
A. The key to solving sleep walking. B. The danger caused by a sleep disorder.
C. The benefit of researching animals’ sleep. D. The need to study animals’ brains while they chew.
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.
Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast.
Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He says, “This data helps the machine learn. You can put the data into machines and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that is important to making decisions.”
David Agus is another USC researcher. He believes that machines are not going to take the place of doctors. He says, “Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can’t recognize by itself.”
Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cells. That process could take days or even longer. Scientists say AI can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes.
Agus adds, “All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time. We didn’t have the computing power to do this several years ago, but now it’s all changed.”
The USC’s researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict AI will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.
32. What is the key to the learning of AI according to the text
A. The input of data. B. The patterns of machines.
C. Computers’ recognition ability. D. Scientists’ continuous research.
33. What is the advantage of AI in identifying cancer compared to traditional practices
A. It will cost less money. B. It will become more effective.
C. It will relieve patients’ suffering. D. It will correct personal mistakes.
34. What does Agus think of the technology
A. It’s satisfactory. B. It’s worrying. C. It’s complex. D. It’s conventional.
35. Which word can best describe the technology
A. User-friendly. B. Integrated. C. Promising. D. Challenging.

Mark was one of my neighbors, known to everyone as “Mr Kind”. Whether it was helping the elderly cross the street or providing food for the homeless, Mark was always the first to step forward. His actions were a beacon of hope and kindness in our community.
One afternoon, Mark was on his way home from work. As he passed by the park, he noticed an elderly man sitting on a bench, looking confused and anxious. Feeling concerned, Mark approached the man and asked, “Sir, are you alright Do you need any help ” The elderly man looked up at him with a lost expression and said, “I can’t find my way home.” Mark immediately comforted him and asked for his home address. The man could only remember that he lived near a park with a big oak (橡树), but he couldn’t recall the exact name of the street. Seeing his distress, Mark decided to help him find his way home.
Mark noticed that the elderly man, who introduced himself as Mr Smith, seemed to be struggling with his memory. He had a distant look in his eyes, and he would often repeat the same stories or forget what he was saying mid-sentence. Mark suspected that Mr Smith might have Alzheimer’s disease. To pass the time and keep Mr Smith calm, Mark started a conversation with him. They talked about the park, the changing seasons, and the simple pleasures of life. The conversation not only helped to soothe Mr Smith’s anxiety but also gave Mark a newfound appreciation for the value of life’s small moments.
Determined to help, Mark started asking around the passers-by who might have known the area well. However, most people shook their heads. But Mark didn’t give up. As the sun began to set, Mark’s search continued. He was starting to feel a bit worried, but he remained hopeful. Just as he was about to try another street, he noticed something around Mr Smith’s neck. It turned out to be a locket (盒式项链坠) containing a card with an address and a phone number.

参考范文:
Should We Study Abroad
As a high school student, I think it’s a good idea to study abroad. There are several reasons why I believe this.
First of all, studying abroad can help us learn a new language better. When we live in a country where the language is spoken, we can practice it every day, which is very helpful. Besides, it can help us understand different cultures. By living with people from different backgrounds, we can learn about their traditions and ways of life. Lastly, studying abroad can make us more independent. We have to take care of ourselves, which can be a great way to grow up and learn to be responsible.
So, in my opinion, if we have the chance, we should definitely consider studying abroad. It’s a great opportunity to learn and grow.

Mark felt a deep sense of happiness and pride in having been able to help. The family’s gratitude warmed his heart, and he knew that his actions had made a difference.

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

M: Of course. People use it widely in short videos.
W: Yes.
M: It’s one of my favorite pieces. When I listen to it, I feel refreshed.
W: Me, too. I’ve collected dozens of pieces that are similar to “Victory”. They can help me save about 20 yuan every day.

W: I’m wondering why some athletes, like weightlifters especially, often shout when they begin to lift.
M: It’s because they want to release more power than they normally have. We all have hidden power that only shows itself in an emergency. In a life-or-death situation, our bodies produce large amounts of a chemical. This can make us stronger for a short period of time.
W: Really That’s amazing! But what does this chemical have to do with shouting
M: Shouting can cause your body to produce this chemical. Take a weightlifting for example. A good shout could add more strength.
W: Wow. Can I also apply this to my brain I’m not good at memorizing English words.
M: I think you’d probably better not shout during your English test.
听下面一段对话,回答第13至第16四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。 (Text 9)

M: What do you mean
W: He comes home every night around 10 o’clock. The point is that his car radio is on loudly for quite a while. And my babies become wide awake for that.
M: Oh, no. That must be terrible!
W: Oh, yes. Sometimes it takes us a long time just to get them to fall asleep again.
M: Have you tried talking to them
W: We haven’t really met them yet except to say a quick hello last month. But I feel it’s stupid to complain.
M: You said it was driving you crazy.
W: Well, I’m just not getting enough sleep and neither are the kids.
M: Maybe you could just go over sometime with a small gift. Then you could talk about your trouble with them. Remember, the longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to do it politely.
W: Well, I guess you’re right. I’ll have a try.
听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。
(Text 10)
M: Good morning, everyone! Last Friday, we talked about Mozart and Franz. In today’s class, we’ll learn about the great German musician Beethoven. Beethoven was born in Bonn in1770. He was first taught by his father and later by the composer and conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe. And under Christian’s guidance, he published his first work in 1783. In 1792, Beethoven moved to Vienna, which later laid the groundwork for his career. He then gained a reputation as a skilled pianist. His first major orchestral work, Symphony No.1 in C Major, Op.21 was first played in public in 1800. Unluckily, he was gradually losing his hearing. Beethoven had to use notebooks to carry out conversations. But he continued to conduct and finished his Symphony No.3 in E-flat Major, Op.55 and Symphony No.5 in C Minor, Op.60 in 1804 and 1808. He was almost completely deaf when he was 45, and then he gave up performing and disappearing in public. Although Beethoven was less social, he composed many of his most admired works. His only opera, Fidelio, was first performed in 1805. After a long illness, he died in 1827. Beethoven’s works make a big difference in classical music now.
