Marco Polo was probably the most famous westerner on the Silk Road. In 1260 his father and his uncle made their first trip to China. They visited Peking. Kublai Khan made this city the capital of Yuan Dynasty.

When Marco was 17 years old, his father and uncle made the second trip to China, and he went with them. Marco Polo knew Mongolian. He learned a lot about Mongol China. Kublai Khan liked Marco Polo.

He sent him as an official to Yangzhou, a city northeast of Nanking. Marco loved Hangzhou very much. At one time Hangzhou was the capital of Song Dynasty and had a beautiful lake and many canals. It was like Marco’s hometown, Venice.
In 1292, Marco Polo left China and returned to Italy. In Italy he told others many stories about China. These stories were called “The Travels of Marco Polo”. This was the first time China had been written about by a westerner.

(1480-1521)
His expedition of 1519-1522 became the first one to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean, and the first to cross the Pacific. It completed the first circumnavigation(环绕地球航行) of the Earth.

Ferdinand Magellan (1480–1521) was a Portuguese explorer. In 1519, he led the first voyage to sail around the world. It was also the first voyage to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Magellan gave the Pacific Ocean its name, which means “peaceful sea” in Portuguese. However, Magellan himself was killed in a battle before the voyage was finished. Only one of his ships, the Victoria, completed the journey.
