Chicago-based Jim Bachor is an expert in fixing up potholes (坑洼)on the streets by filling them up
with his beautiful and strong mosaics (马赛克).
In fact, Bachor,s career as a pothole artist began with a trip to the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy,
where he learned mosaic could remain for a long time, standing the test of time. The tour guide pointed at
a 2,000-year-old artwork and said that although it had gone through so many years, the marble and glass
pieces had not faded. The realization of the artwork,s staying power blew Bachor away. A few months
later he was in Italy learning the secrets of ancient mosaic art and he pursued it as a hobby fbr a few years.
In May of 2013 he got the idea of applying his skill to fixing an annoying pothole in his
neighborhood. Bachor said. repeatedly filled with concrete, yet it kept reappearing." So, what I did was that I created a Special piece of
art fbr that pothole.”
However, creating pothole mosaics was quite different from doing them in the comfort of his own
studio. For instance, it was challenging to protect them fbr a few hours before they became firm. One day,
while he accompanied his sons to their soccer practice, the training cones (锥桶)inspired him. Jim Bachor
placed them around the pothole mosaics to act as temporary traffic markers, guiding traffic around them.
Bachor started doing pothole mosaics in his neighborhood with many of his neighbors coming to
help him, and as his work started getting more attention, he even did some projects in other major cities.

C. To fix a recurring pothole issue.
D. To raise people's awareness of art.
26. How did Jim Bachor protect his pothole mosaics from damage

Most people agree that transforming from fossil fuels to sustainable electricity, whether directly or
indirectly, is the best strategy for human beings. However, some industries face significant challenges in
this shift. Aviation (航空)is one such area. Batteries are too heavy, and hydrogen (M), made from clean
power, has some difficulties in moving and storing it
However, a new approach could offer a solution by producing fuels from CO2 waste generated by
various industrial processes. A recent study published in Nature by Dr. Aldo Steinfeld of ETH Zurich and
his colleagues illustrates how these fuels might be created from thin air. Scientists at ETH Zurich have
created a system that can emulate the natural process of photosynthesis (光合作用),where plants change
CO2 and water into energy by using sunlight
The system consists of three stages: first, it takes in CO2 and water from the atmosphere; second, it
uses sunlight to heat a material, which reacts with both CO2 and water, then making new gases; and
finally, it transforms these gases into a liquid fuel.
The team's device was installed on the roof of ETH,s Machine Laboratory Building. While the
current output is small, the experiment demonstrates the practicability of the concept. Rough estimates
suggest that completely replacing the global aviation fuel market through this method would require about
45,000 km2 of suitable land. That sounds a lot, but ifsjust about 0.5% of the Sahara Deserfs area.
To promote the adoption of this air-produced fuel, policy measures such as taxes on traditional fuels
and legal support will be necessary. These measures could encourage the use of more sustainable aviation
fuels. Anyway, Dr. Steinfeld's research that turns air into fuel holds great potential for making flying
more eco-friendly. It not only reduces reliance on fbssii fuels but also contributes to the fight against ]
climate change by offering a sustainable alternative for air travel.
28. What is a main challenge in using sustainable electncity for aviation
A. Costs of traditional fuels. I
B. Efficiency of labor force.
C. Transportation of clean energy.
D. Shortage of advanced technology.
29. What does the underlined word "emulate" in paragraph 2 mean
A. Copy. B. Establish. C. Adapt D. Speed. 3
30. What can be inferred about the team's device from paragraph 4
A. It must be set up on roofs of buildings.
B. It is likely to take the place of traditional fuels.
C. Its concept is unpractical for use in real-world.
D. Its output will increase if it is installed in deserts. 3:
31. What is the author's attitude toward Dr. Steinfeld's research
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Tolerant D. Supportive.

"Can you finish the woric by the end of the day ” This question might cause anxiety for many
employees. However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some individuals to
complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.
高三英语试题 第5页 (共10页)
In a study focused on retirement planning, volunteers completed a brief online survey under two
different deadline conditions. One group had seven days to finish the survey, while the other was given 14
days. The researchers discovered that those facing the longer deadline often viewed the task as more
difficult. Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and resources, they
were also more likely to procrastinate (拖延)and less 1 汰ely to complete the assignment compared to those
with shorter deadlines.
Recognizing that people frequently deal with multiple deadlines, researchers explored how
individuals manage various tasks at the same time. The findings found a mental tendency: individuals
often delay important tasks in favor of urgent but less significant ones. For example, many delay routine
medical check-ups— crucial for health— in favor of rushing to a store for a limited-time sale. This occurs
because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate satisfaction.
These patterns have significant results for managers and others involved in setting deadlines.
Understanding these mental processes can help find strategies to enhance task completion rates. Short
deadlines for urgent tasks tend to draw attention more effectively, leading to higher completion rates and
reduced procrastination. On the other hand, longer deadlines can lead to excessive careful thought or
distraction, resulting in incomplete work.
However, ifs essential to recognize that longer deadlines may still be necessary for complex tasks,
particularly when external factors, such as resource availability or cooperation, require additional time for
proper completion. In such cases, a balanced approach is crucial: setting realistic deadlines that account
for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes. By recognizing the minor differences of
human motivation, individuals and organizations can develop effective strategies for task management.
32. According to recent research, what may shorter deadlines bring about
A. Increased stress. B. Higher efficiency. C. Reduced workload. D. Slower completion.
33. Why do people tend to delay important tasks for urgent ones
A. Urgent tasks offer instant rewards.
B. Urgent tasks are more complicated.
C. Important tasks are less challenging.
D. Important tasks needs multi-tasking.
34. How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcome
A. Set ail tasks with shorter deadlines.
B. Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C. Balance task urgency and complexity.
D. Extend deadlines for significant tasks.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Role of Urgency in Task Completion
B. Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C. Influences of Procrastination on Work Quality
D. The Power of Deadlines in Task Management

In a small village of Somerset, England, there lived a boy named Jack and his beloved grandfather, an

matter how tough things get, as long as you have faith, nothing is impossible**. These words were Jackys
guiding light, especially in the dark days after his grandfather^ passing away.
Luckily, Jack had a companion with him, a horse named Lightning. Jack and Lightning grew up
together, exploring the forest and playing by the river. They were inseparable friends. One day, Jack set
out on an adventure with Lightning. As they went further into the forest, a sudden storm came. When
Lightning tried to get away from a Alling tree, he accidentally stepped into a hidden swamp (沼泽).The
mud was so thick that Lightning got stuck, unable to free himself no matter how hard he tried.
Panicked, Jack tried to pull Lightning out with his own hands, but the swamp was too strong. He ran
back to the village seeking for help. Swiftly, a group of villagers followed Jack to the swamp, their faces
turning concerned as they saw the half-buried Lightning. From their past experience, the villagers were all
aware that a situation like this meant death for the trapped animal. Yet, they still tried to use ropes to pull
Lightning out, but in vain.
As the villagers returned to the village, Jack remained by the swamp, looking at Lightning. The once
strong horse now stood with his head lowered, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and helplessness as he
sank deeper into the mud. Jack, detennined to save his friend, recalled his grandfather^ words. Closing
his eyes, Jack concentrated, and then a voice echoed in his mind: ^Nothing is impossible. Use life to
