Ronald Hennig, an 18-year-old, self-confident young man, remembers a crucial moment two years ago when a family member passed away. This left him with an urgent yet ignored need: a suit for the funeral. As an adopted child, he couldn’t afford one and felt ashamed of the idea of going to the funeral in ordinary clothes. His caseworker was unable to take his request into consideration, which made him more desperate.
In despair, One Simple Wish, a platform founded by Danielle Gletow in 2008, became a ray of hope. This online place for adopted children connected Ronald’s sincere wish with an unknown donor, and he got a made-to-measure suit. At the funeral, he paid proper respect to his loved one. For years, the platform has changed the lives of countless adopted children, fulfilling their wishes, such as getting bicycles or having music lessons. Furthermore, the online organization has launched projects like the Ohana Project, which provides essential support during life changes, and Wish to Work, which equips older adopted youth like Ronald with learning skills and inspires them to go to college. Ronald’s success story shows its influence.
Danielle, who changed from an adoptive parent to a supporter, recognized the unmet needs and came up with a solution. She ensures the credibility of her platform through social services. It encourages people all over the world to be generous and turns dreams into reality at a low cost.
Motivated by the belief that every child should have a better life, Danielle calls on society to pay attention and take action, stressing the importance of even the smallest wishes. One Simple Wish promotes a culture of online charity, bringing warmth and leaving a lasting impact. The world’s elderly population is increasing. The number of older people - those aged 60 years or older - is expected to double by 2050 and is growing faster than all younger age groups across the world. That comes with an increasing need for caregivers who can provide24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Already, caregiving robots are programmed to ask questions a nurse would ask and can keep an eye on patients for falls. These robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450,000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the United States.
“Unluckily, the hard structure of present caregiving robots prevents them from a safe human-robot interaction, limiting their assistance to only social interaction and not physical interaction,” said Ramses Martinez, an assistant professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “After all, would you leave babies or old people in the hands of a robot ”
Recent advances in material science have enabled the production of soft robots with deformable (可变形的) bodies or the ability to reshape themselves when touched, but today the complex design prevents the use of this technology at home.
However, Martinez and other researchers have developed a new design method which shows promise in enabling the production of soft robots using a 3-D printer.
The design process has three steps. First, a user makes a computer-added design file with the shape of the robot. The user then paints the file to show which directions the different joints of the soft robot will move. It takes the computer a few seconds to change the computer-aided design model into a 3-D soft machine that can be printed using any 3-D printer.
“The soft machines move like humans. Their ability to change their body structure and movement to adapt to a wide variety of environments will improve caregiving greatly,” says Martinez.
The researchers are looking for partners to test and bring their technology to the market.
What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.The younger age group. B.The group of older people
C.The population across the world. D.The growth of the elderly population
What is the disadvantage of the present caregiving robots
A.They can’t offer safe physical interaction. B.They can’t communicate with patients.
C.They can’t watch patients for falls. D.They can’t provide 24-hour care.
What do we know about Martinez’s new design method
It is hard for users to understand.
It has brought the robots to the market.
C.It works with a special kind of 3-D printer.
D.It makes the production of soft robots simpler.
What is the text mainly about
A.The robot industry in the future.
B.The development of caregiving robots.
C.Robots for the elderly created with 3-D printers.
D.Effects of population ageing around the world.
D
Why do we talk the way we do It might date back to when our ancestors left the jungle for the open plain. Between 5.3 million and 16 million years ago, Africa’s landscapes changed from thick, leafy forests to wide-open grasslands. This environmental change pushed our ancestors out of the trees and onto the ground. Along with all of the physical and behavioral changes this may have caused, researchers also believe it may have changed the way we speak.
“Open landscapes provide us with fewer objects to affect signal communication, meaning our voices can travel further compared with that in thick forests,” Charlotte Gannon, a researcher who studies language development, told Newsweek. “The move to these open spaces may have increased the effectiveness of our communication.”
By comparing the vocal calls of the orangutan (大猩猩) , Gannon and her team were able to establish how different calls could travel across different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls from orangutans and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length over an overall distance of over 1,300 feet in the South African plain.
“Our results were surprising,” Gannon said, “The rule of sound spread suggests that lower-frequency (低频率) sounds (the grumphs) would have traveled further than higher-frequency sounds (the kiss squeaks). Our results actually found the opposite to this.” In these environmental settings, consonant (辅音)-like calls traveled a lot further than vowel (元音) -like calls. Actually, around 80 percent of consonant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, compared to only 20 percent of vowel-based calls.
Gannon said these results highlight the importance of studying living orangutan to learn about our species’ history. “We can view them as time machines that allow us to recreate key moments of our history so we can learn more about the development of our language,” Gannon said. “Despite their popularity in modern languages, consonants have often been forgotten when discussing speech development. Our research highlights not only their presence in ancient times but their importance to the development of language.”
32. What led to the speech development
A. Behavioral change. B. Time development.
C. Physical development. D. Environmental change.
33. What makes communication happening 10 million years ago more effective
A. Less block. B. Better tools. C. Louder voice. D. Larger vocabulary.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The results of the study. B. The process of the research.
C. The purpose of the program. D. The participants of the project.
35. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. The living orangutan can recreate our language.
B. Consonants are significant in language development.
C. The sound of grumphs travels further than that of kiss squeaks.
D. Consonant-like calls travel four times further than vowel-like calls.

Henry Crawley was a cab driver who drove long circuits every day. His job kept him away from family for long hours. It was the topic of many quarrels he had gotten into with his wife, who understood why he was away so often but could not resist the urge to cry out for her husband’s physical absence.
To make up for not always being there for his daughter, Leslie, Henry was determined to make it to her 16th birthday party on time. On the day of her birthday, Henry conveyed as many passengers as he could as usual. When he finally finished the last order to a distant town outside the city, Henry rushed back to his city for the small party.
However, he got caught up in a heavy snowstorm that restricted mobility on his way back. Stubbornly, he decided he would press on anyway and continued driving even though he had to go at a snail’s (蜗牛的) pace.
It was 6: 00 pm and Leslie’s party started at 6: 30 pm. He complained about the weather as he fastened his eyes on the slippery road. As time passed, he got closer to the city. Suddenly, he spotted a person sitting beside the road. He stopped his car to check on it, and found it was an elderly woman who was unable to speak but almost freezing. Her bedroom clothes told him she must be from the town nearby he just drove past.
Henry decided to take the woman to her town, but he remembered that his wife would be upset with him if he missed his daughter’s birthday party. He called his wife to explain things. As he predicted, she said nothing, ending up the call. That made him uneasy and almost turn back to his car. But he knew that he could not leave the woman helpless. “I’d want someone to care for my wife or daughter if they ended up in such a tough situation,” he said to himself.

Dear Editor-in-chief,
Congratulations on the 5th anniversary of Global Mirror! I’m a loyal reader obsessed with it who read it as my daily routine.
With international perspective and in-depth analysis, Global Mirror has become a beacon of global insight and thoughtful commentary. Besides, there are several columns of reader engagement, among which “Go with Celebrity” is my favorite.
However, due to increasingly heavy academic burden, sometimes I find reading it every day takes up too much time. Therefore, I’d appreciate it if you could launch a simplified edition once a week and meanwhile offer some tips on learning, which might provide another platform for us students to broaden our horizons and benefit our schoolwork.
Thank you for your dedication to delivering quality content! May Global Mirror enjoy more circulation and happy anniversary again!
Yours sincerely,

读后续写
Without any hesitation, Henry was determined to help the stranger. He lifted the woman with all his might and settled her in the back seat of his car. Noticing she was shivering from the cold, Henry turned up his car heater to warm the freezing woman. Eventually, he brought the woman to a hospital in the town. Exactly as he had suspected, the nurses immediately recognized the woman. They revealed that the woman had Alzheimer’s disease, which led her to have trouble in communicating and always fail to find her way home. Having hearing that, Henry knew he really did the right thing. After that, Henry made his way home immediately.
Upon his arrival, it was late at night and Henry became more uneasy. He parked the car in the driveway and entered his house. There was no sign that there had been any celebration, as everything for the birthday party was well organized. Seeing her father return safe and sound, Leslie ran into his arms happily. He apologized to her that he couldn’t make it to her party on time. Little did Leslie care about that. Turning around, “I’m sorry I was away for so long, but I didn’t plan to be,” he said, expecting an annoyed response. Nevertheless, he got a hug instead from his wife who was proud of her husband’s kind gesture. The couple then celebrated their daughter’s birthday joyfully late at night.
