DRINKS TO KEEP YOU COOLAS THE WORLD HEATS UP!
Given all the heavy weather-related new swirling around these past few weeks, I thought it might be helpful to write about something that could bring the temperature down a little. For months, I’ve been researching the drinks that people in hot places use to cool down. I’m going to share four of my favorites that have been getting me through the warmer days in my air conditioner-free apartment.
Limonana
I’ve rarely seen a lemonade that I didn’t want to get my hands on, but this one is next-level. The recipe I used, from two Egyptian American sisters, is simple, luxurious, and easy to make vegan (subbing coconut milk for whole). If you’re a fan of caipirinhas or mojitos, this drink is their tart, bittersweet, workday-friendly cousin.
Mango Lassi
Am I going to lie and tell you that I’ve made a mango lassi in my dingy blender that can barely turn ice cream into milkshake No. I haven’t. What I have done is drive down the street and purchase a crate of them from one of my favorite restaurants. But if I were going to attempt these, I’d probably start with the recipe from Tea for Turmeric (by a Pakistani American food blogger whose recipes rarely miss).
Mint Tea
Haters will say a hot drink doesn’t belong on this list. To those people, I say: I believe in science. In all seriousness, folks in some of the hottest parts of the world have been drinking hot tea to cool down for millennia. And while the particular type of tea varies from culture to culture, mint tea — the national drink of Morocco — has been my saving grace this summer.
Red Drink
There are versions of this (with different names) everywhere from Dakar to Bridgetown to Galveston. And while Red Drink is often associated with Juneteenth (六月节), it’s versatile and cooling enough to be consumed all season long. I’m a Rooibos-girly, so the version I turn to again and again is this one, from Bryant Terry’s Afro-Vegan cookbook. But the possibilities for this drink are endless, and the recipes are everywhere.
21. Which will someone not keen on a cool drink choose
A. Limonana. B. Mango Lassi. C. Mint Tea. D. Red Drink.
22. What do those drinks have in common
A. They can be homemade. B. They are popular worldwide.
C. They are related to festivals. D. They appeal to mojito lovers.
23. Where can we most probably read this passage
A. A feature in a travel guide. B. An extract from a lifestyle blog.
C. An advertisement for drinks. D. A recipe from an exotic restaurant.
B
Going into my Ph.D. program, I knew I loved to communicate science to the public as much as I liked doing science. But the few times I presented to broader audiences, I found myself struggling to explain how my research might be applied in the real world and why it counts.
The problem came to a head 5 years into my Ph.D. when I took a trip to Maine. Many fellow travelers excitedly shared stories about the latest books they’d consumed. I could vividly recall every detail of the papers piling up back in the lab, and yet I couldn’t remember the last book I had read for fun. I found myself mostly talking about my research. As I struggled to convey its broader relevance, I noticed that the enthusiasm in my voice faded away with each new conversation. “Is my Ph. D. killing my passion for science ” I thought.
When I returned home, I resolved to dedicate more time to reading for pleasure, and my brother had recommended a science fiction book, which blew me away by the scientific technologies and plots crafted within a wildly imaginative storyline. It was like nothing I had ever read before.
I kept reading science fiction after I finished my Ph.D. But I still hadn’t gotten back to communicating science to the public until a colleague invited me to speak at a pop culture convention (大会), where I gave a speech about the science behind the classic fiction book Dune by Frank Herbert.
When the day came to present, I was overcome with anxiety and nervousness until I was on the stage and saw the bright-eyed, curious attendees. After I finished, I was overwhelmed with questions and comments that spilled over beyond the given time. It suddenly occurred to me that this was my path back to science communication. I’m glad science fiction helped me professionally, fueling my ability to communicate the wonders of science to broader audiences.
24. What do we know about the author’s initial challenge
A. How to sustain interest in science consistently. B. How to spread science to the public effectively.
C. How to apply science to the real world practically. D. How to recall something about the research vividly.
25. Which word best describes the book recommended by the author’s brother
A. Ordinary. B. Professional. C. Scientific. D. Novel.
26. What helped the author regain his passion for popularizing science
A. A speech on the science behind Dune. B. Preference for reading science fiction.
C. Support and encouragement from attendees. D. A classic fiction book Dune by Frank Herbert.
27. What does the author mainly convey through his experience
A. The dilemma of most Ph.D. students. B. The impact of pop culture convention.
C. The joy of rediscovering science communication. D. The significance of public engagement in science.

From the swinging rhythms of the 1950s to the autotuned hooks of today, pop music has undergone a remarkable transformation. But what exactly has changed, and how can we measure it
Researchers identify two major “melodic (旋律的) revolutions” in pop music history: one in 1975 and another in 2000. These pivotal moments mark significant shifts in the structure and complexity of hit melodies. Interestingly, these musical milestones aren’t perfectly in line with the revolutions in harmony and tone color, suggesting that different aspects of music may evolve at different rates.
During these revolutions melodies have generally become simpler, both in terms of pitch (音高) and rhythm. Modern pop hits tend to use a smaller range of notes and simpler rhythmic patterns compared to those from the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, there was a dramatic increase in “note density” — the number of notes squeezed into each second of music. This means that while today’s pop melodies might be simpler in structure, they’re often delivered more rapidly, creating a sense of energy and urgency that wasn’t as common in earlier decades.
There are several interesting possibilities for what is happening. One theory suggests that as other aspects of music production — like complex electronic beats and richly layered instrumentation — have become more sophisticated, melodies have had to simplify to maintain a balance. Another explanation points to the changing landscape of music consumption. In an era of streaming and social media, where listeners can skip to the next song in seconds, there may be more pressure to create tunes that grab attention instantly. This could favor simpler, more repetitive melodies that are easy to remember and sing along to.
Relationships between different musical features have also become stronger in recent years. For example, in post-2000 pop hits, melodies with more notes per second tend to be less complex in terms of pitch variety. This suggests that modern pop songwriting may be following stricter patterns than in the past.
28. What do the underlined words “pivotal moments” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Revolutionary approaches. B. Turning points.
C. Significant achievements. D. Historical events.
29. What change has taken place in pop music over the years
A. Denser notes. B. Bigger range of pitch.
C. More complex rhythms. D. More diverse tone colors.
30. Which of the following may contribute to the revolution of pop music
A. The difficulty in creating catchier tunes. B. The conventional patterns to enjoy music.
C. The convenience of switching between songs. D. The need to balance increasingly intense beats.
31. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To prove a viewpoint. B. To remove some doubts.
C. To illustrate a principle. D. To analyze a phenomenon.
D
Goldfish may seem like simple creatures swimming in a glass tank, but they possess a rather complicated navigation system, as discovered by researchers at the University of Oxford. Led by Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux, the study aims to shed light on our understanding of how fish, and potentially humans, estimate distances using what could be described as an internal GPS.
Writing in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Sibeaux and colleagues report how they created a tank in their experiment with 2 cm-wide black and white vertical stripes (垂直条纹) on the walls, connected by similar stripes across the floor. The team trained nine goldfish to swim a set distance of 70 cm and then return to their starting point when waved at. The experiment aimed to investigate how the fish would estimate this distance without any gestures, under different patterns.
Over multiple trials, the goldfish averaged a swim distance of 74 cm, give or take 17 cm, when presented with the vertical 2 cm-wide stripes. However, when the stripe pattern was altered to either narrower vertical stripes, checked patterns, or horizontal stripes (水平条纹), the fish’s behavior changed significantly. Narrower vertical stripes led them to overestimating the distance by 36%, while horizontal stripes resulted in highly inconsistent estimations.
According to the researchers, the results indicate that goldfish estimate distances by visually streaming the apparent motion patterns of objects in the environment (called ‘optic flow’). Many terrestrial (陆地上的) species are known to use optic flow to estimate distance, but goldfish appear to process the information differently. Terrestrial animals, including humans, estimate distances by measuring how the angle between their eye and surrounding objects changes as they travel. Goldfish, on the other hand, appear to use the number of contrast changes experienced en-route.
“This study is groundbreaking because, despite knowing that fish respond to geometric information regarding direction and distance, we don’t know how they estimate distances,” Professor Colin Lever, although not involved in the study, said, “it’s exciting to explore fish spatial mapping because fish navigation evolved earlier and better than most mammals.”
32. Why did Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux conduct the study on goldfish
A. To test how accurate goldfish’s internal GPS can be.
B. To create an advanced navigation system for humans.
C. To uncover how an inbuilt GPS helps calculate distances.
D. To explore the relationships between goldfish and humans.
33. What can we learn about the experiment
A. People gestured the goldfish throughout the experiment.
B. Goldfish tended to underestimate distances with horizontal stripes.
C. The tank was decorated with colorful background patterns.
D. The tank setting change caused the goldfish’s misjudgment.
34. How does the author present the results of the study in paragraph 4
A. By giving definition. B. By offering examples.
C. By making comparison. D. By analyzing statistics.
35. What attitude does Professor Colin hold towards the study
A. Objective. B. Ambiguous. C. Disapproving. D. Favorable.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
We’re always hoping something magical will come along to throw us to good health — some super food or new exercise trend. 36 It’ s what we eat, how we move, how much we sleep, and how much we manage stress and social connection that can really make a difference.
37 For those of you who don’t like the gym, you may get yourself moving, too. A garden pushes you to weed and water and harvest almost every day. That keeps you moving. Also, instead of lying on chairs or sofas, spend more time on the floor, either sitting or squatting (蹲).
Manage your social circle. Research has shown just how contagious (传染的) our habits are to people around. When one of your old friends has some unhealthy habits, they’re probably influencing you in the wrong way. If you aim to live a healthier life, you are more likely to achieve if those around you are committed, too. 38
Have a short sleep. Once you clock in to work in the workdays, there’s so much keeping you busy. To push through these busy days, it’s common to turn to coffee rather than slow down your pace. There is an alternative: a short sleep for as little as 20 minutes in the afternoon. Taking a nap after lunch is an age-old tradition. 39 However, the most recent science shows that a 20-minute sleep can make up for an hour of lost sleep and helps keep you sharp later in the day.
There’s no single change to create a culture of health. 40 That can help push people toward better choices and make the healthier choice the easiest.
A. Plan a garden in your backyard. B. But the reality is much more ordinary. C. Just join the groups that side with you. D. You can do this in your social circle as well. E. Modern life has pushed it to near extinction. F. Build movement into your everyday routines. G. Moving the needle requires dozens of small steps.

Lionel, Fandi and Iskandar often got together to play football. They dreamt of one day growing up to be professional footballers. The empty field beside the block of neighbourhood was where they would meet for their football sessions.
One sunny afternoon, they were at the field as usual. They were in the thick of their game when Fandi aimed his foot at the ball and gave a forceful kick. He himself was surprised by his strength. The ball flew past the goalposts breaking into a glass window of the house behind. The boys were too shocked for words. They were half expecting the annoyed home owner, Madam Leong, to storm out through the front door and give them a good tongue criticizing. They knew she was an ill-tempered old lady. Actually, she had scolded them several times before for being too noisy.
When no one came out of the house after ten minutes, the boys were quite surprised. They had prepared themselves for a scolding and were ready to compensate Madam Leong for breaking her window. Out of curiosity, Fandi adventured into Madam Leong’s yard. The gate was unlocked and he went in while the other two waited outside. Fandi knocked on the main door. No reply. Looking in through the broken window, Fandi let out a loud scream. Lying on the floor in a pool of blood was the old lady. There was a big cut on her forehead. She must have been cut by pieces of glass, flying across the living room.
In panic, Fandi immediately dialled 911 for an ambulance. As they were unable to enter the house without a key, there was nothing they could do but wait for the ambulance to arrive. Although the ambulance arrived soon, to the boys, the annoying wait seemed like forever. The ambulance attendants forced open the door and rushed to Madam Leong. She was unconscious, but still breathing. One of the ambulance attendants applied pressure on the wound and wrapped it. With its emergency lights flashing, the ambulance rushed off to the nearest hospital.

I’m Li Hua. It’s a great honor for me to deliver a speech themed Embrace Challenges in Our Life.
It’s normal for us to have challenges at times. To meet challenges, we must maintain an optimistic mindset first. Instead of shying away, we should analyze them, formulate strategies, and take decisive actions. Second, stay determined. Hard work and perseverance can turn obstacles into achievements. Lastly, seek help when needed. Learning from others can provide new perspectives and solutions.
Let’s embrace challenges wholeheartedly and shape a remarkable future.
第二节 读后续写参考答案
The three boys decided to stay behind to wait for Madam Leong’s family to return. Half an hour witnessed their anxious waiting, but they felt like a decade passing by. Heart pounding wildly and a surge of worry creeping up on them, they faced the hurried family of Madam Leong, especially Fandi, who was obviously immersed in the ocean of quit and grief, resting his head on his hand and sitting on the stairs silently. Fandi stepped forward, explaining the awful accident caused by him. To their astonishment, the family didn’t scold them by virtue of the fact that they didn’t mean to do it. What the family wanted was the safety of Madam Leong.
To everyone’s relief, Madam Leong received immediate treatment. It was not only exciting news for her family, but also a rope saving three boys from the deep cliff of guilt. When they got to the hospital, seeing Madam Leong wake up, the previous fear gave way to relief. In the following days, they volunteered to look after her in an endeavor to make up for the mistake. Gradually, Madam Leong realized their sincerity and changed her attitude to the boys. Soon after, life went back to normal, and Madam Leong sometimes even invited the exhausted football players to drink water.
