Amelia was experiencing a crisis. Her trusty old car had finally died. Public transportation wasn’t a
choice in her rural town. It was time to shop around for a new car, and she wasn’t happy about it. Cars cost
an arm and a leg nowadays.
She spent a few days window-shopping online. New cars were out of the question; purchasing one
would break the bank. Buying a used car was a gamble(赌博), but it was that or nothing.
One Saturday, armed with a little hope and a lot of doubt, Amelia set out for a used car lot. It
resembled a shopper’s paradise with rows upon rows of vehicles whispering promises of freedom. A
salesman, Mr. Jones, appeared at her side and launched into a sales pitch, assuring(向... 保证) her each
car was a good value.
Amelia wasn’t easily convinced. She politely excused herself, wanting to look around on her own.
She spent the next hour searching through the sea of cars. The ones that caught her interest were a little
pricey. Discouragement settled over her.
Feeling defeated, she was about to leave when a dusty car in the far corner caught her eye. It wasn’t
exactly what she was in the market for, but it had a certain charm. As she slowly approached it, the
ever-watchful Mr. Jones rushed over. He admitted the car wasn’t a top-of-the-line model, but it had been
well-maintained and was surprisingly a good value.
Intrigued, Amelia opened the hood, more for show than anything else. To her surprise, the engine
looked very clean. When she took it for a test drive, she found that the car fit her like a glove.
Back at the lot, she played hardball. At first, Mr. Jones refused her offer, but after some argument
over the price, they settled on an amount Amelia could afford. As she drove away, she smiled, glad that
she didn’t need to break the bank. Now it was time for her new car’s first important mission—she needed
groceries.
Weeks later, Amelia came across Mr. Jones at the market. After chatting a bit, they parted ways each
satisfied with how things had turned out.
6. Why did Amelia decide not to buy a new car
A. Because she went broke.
B. Because she could take a bus.
C. Because she couldn’t afford it.
D. Because she wasn’t happy about it.
7. What disappointed Amelia when searching through the sea of cars
A. Dream cars’ price. B. Mr. Jones’ attitude.
C. A dusty corner car. D. Long-time search.
8. What does the underlined word “Intrigued” mean in paragraph 6
A. Curious. B. Energetic. C . Surprised. D. Pleased.
9. What was the first thing Amelia did with her new car
A. Joining a test. B. Going to bank.
C. Meeting Mr. Jones. D. Buying goods.
10. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Satisfying Deal B. The Wise Salesman
C. The Used Vehicle D. The Quick Decision

Farmers in Southeast Asia have been digging ginger(姜) out of the ground for over 5,000 years. Fresh,
dried, chopped or powdered, hot-but-sweet ginger was used in food and medicine throughout ancient Asia.
People used ginger as a cure for headaches, upset stomachs and more.
Over two thousand years ago, the wealthy rulers of Europe heard about this root. Merchants began
traveling by land and sea to Asia and carried ginger back to Europe, hoping to sell it and become rich. But
in the 14th and 15th centuries, thieves stole spices(香料), and storms sent ships to the bottom of the sea.
For those reasons, ginger was a luxury in Europe for centuries. The wealthy impressed their dinner
guests by adding the spice to meat and desserts and even made it into wine. It is said that England’s Queen
Elizabeth I invented gingerbread men and gave them to important guests. The taste of this rare spice
reminded people of one’s high social status.
By the 1600s, ginger was making its way to the Americas. Settlers took the spice and their recipes
with them. Nowadays, its spicy taste is everywhere. On Thanksgiving Day, a bit of ginger powder will
spice up pumpkin pies.
Turmeric, ginger’s cousin, comes chiefly from India, where people have been breaking it into a
golden powder for nearly 4,000 years. Traders started carrying it to the Middle East and Africa around
A.D. 700. In the 13th century it was taken into Europe and eventually made its way to North America.
A key part in traditional Indian medicine turmeric is also used as a beauty aid, a dye and a spice. In
fact, it gives Indian curry its famous taste and golden color. Turmeric is considered effective in treating
allergies, pain, swelling and other health-related issues because it contains a chemical called curcumin.
Research continues as scientists try to understand all of its benefits.
Both spices have a lot to offer, so go ahead and spice up your life with a little ginger and turmeric.
11. What aspect of ginger does paragraph 1 focus on
A. Its history. B. Its uses. C. Its processing. D. Its planting.
12. What contributed to ginger’s being a luxury in Europe
A. High shipping fees. B. The rich’s treating guests.
C. Being stolen by thieves. D. Queen Elizabeth’s influence.
13. How is paragraph 5 developed
A. By space. B. By time. C. By contrast. D. By description.
14. What can we learn about turmeric from paragraph 6
A. Turmeric is a traditional Indian medicine.
B. Ginger and turmeric are mainly from India.
C. Turmeric can cure diseases linked to health.
D. Indian curry is golden color due to Turmeric.
15. In which section of the magazine can we read this article
A. Art. B. Nature. C. Science. D. Food.

The Oxford English Dictionary says “happiness” is about feeling and showing pleasure. To be
happy, you can make your life better by making each moment count. 16
Have a good, healthy meal at the start of the day. A delicious breakfast in the morning helps you feel
energised and fresh. Make sure it is full of protein and something you enjoy eating. Your body carries you
for life; keeping it healthy means taking care of yourself. 17
If you get upset during the day, reach out to your best friend. 18 Someone who knows how
to make you feel better. This will make you feel that you are not alone in the world, and that someone is
willing to listen to you talk about a certain asshole for a zillion times and will still listen to you. Until you
feel better for the night.
19 Some people like running, some prefer competitive sports, and some other people love
hitting the gym. Find something that gets your heart rate up a little. The point is to get moving–your brain
loves it, so that you do not think about what happened and you can just let it all out.
Find a little bit of time to practise kindness. Hold the door or the lift for someone if they are coming
behind you. Let the car in front of you pass if their signal is on. Help the elderly lady with her shopping
bags. 20 It is proven that one small little act of kindness can make a person feel happy for an
entire day.
A. These surprises many people.
B. Your friend is always ready to reach out.
C. Your body will feel better and thank you too.
D. Let’s explore practical steps to achieve this.

Meeting at a church on a Friday night is not usual for most college students, but it is for the members
of an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) women’s group in my hometown, which is an organization for
alcoholics who want to stop drinking alcohol.
AA is based upon a number of principles, including twelve steps and twelve traditions. The traditions
state that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Members read aloud these steps
and traditions, as well as a promise.
The AA meeting we attended was a speaker week, which meant that the majority of the time was spent
listening to a particular member talk about her journey with alcohol. The speaker recounted her story with
addiction. The group processed the story in a positive way. I noticed several times when members laughed,
smiled, and made brief supporting comments while she spoke. Later, a member shared with me that “this
is the kind of place where you can talk about things, and everyone just laughs...no judgment but support.”
Being able to talk about her emotions and experiences, receiving support, and the lack of judgment was a
large part of her decision to keep coming to meetings.
Years later, I look back on the meeting with fond memories. It changed the way I looked at addiction.
It was no longer an evil faceless monster. I think it's essential to have support when you’re struggling with
addiction, as with any lifestyle change. AA is a prime example of how groups follow a program and
commit (致力于) to changing their habits.
And it doesn’t hurt that sometimes after the meeting, everyone has a piece of cake.
6. What’s AA women’s group designed for
A. Gatherings on Friday nights. B. Staying away from alcohol.
C. Starting an autonomous group. D. Promoting twelve traditions.
7. What are members of the group supposed to do
A. Share their experiences.
B. Make judgement on others.
C. Recite 12 steps and traditions.
D. Give lectures on handling addiction.
8. For some, the highlight of the meeting is to _____.
A. make comments B. exchange ideas
C. meet new friends D. have emotional connection
9. What does the author think of the meeting
A. Meaningful. B. Amusing. C. Time-consuming. D. Worthless.
10. What can people do by attending the meeting
A. Drink some coffee. B. Play a game.
C. Make a meal. D. Share some food.

It is a well-known fact that children love toys. However, some adults fail to overcome their passion for
toys and decide to collect them. In fact, collecting toys, rather than a passion, has become a very profitable
(赚钱的) business. Some people have managed to auction (拍卖) their old toys for hundreds of thousands
of dollars.
For example, in Dallas, Texas, a man sold a GI Joe action figure for $ 200,000. Too much money for
just a piece of plastic! But why do collectors pay so much for a toy
Those collectable toys that are sold for so much money aren’t made of rare material or are made of
diamonds. Actually, the value of these items is in their rareness. If there are few copies of that toy in the
world, it’s very likely that it’s worth a lot of money.
Toys from limited editions or whose production was canceled by the few sales are some of the most
prized by collectors. If you have a limited edition toy with several decades old, maybe you could sell it for
more money than you imagine.
Where to buy action figures Today you can buy action figures in toy stores and even supermarkets.
There are also hundreds of websites where you can buy action figures. Many people have been lucky
enough to find very expensive action figures in garage sales. Sometimes, these seemingly worthless things
are full of treasures. So the next time you wonder: Where to buy action figures You should keep in mind
places like these.
Currently, television, smartphones, internet and video games expose our children to harmful influences
that can affect their behavior and the way they relate to others. Toys are the best way to put to work the
imagination of little ones. Sharing their toys with other children will also teach them valuable lessons that
will be useful for them when they grow up.
For that reason and many others, a toy is more than a piece of plastic with screws.
11. What does the author want to convey by mentioning GI Joe action figure
A. GI Joe action figure is popular.
B. Collecting toys can be profitable.
C. GI Joe action figure is very expensive.
D. Old toys are nothing but pieces of plastic.
12. What makes collectable toys valuable
A. Its material. B. Its large quantity.
C. Its high quality. D. Its limited copies.
13. In which of the following places can you possibly find a real bargain
A. Toy stores. B. Supermarkets.
C. Websites. D. Yard sales.
14. What does the second paragraph from the bottom focus on
A. Children’s obsession with toys.
B. The harmful influence of social media.
C. The differences between toys and games.
D. Toys’ advantages over electronic devices.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards having toys
A. Favorable. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Critical.

Many a time when you are absorbed in the plots of TV series, you may wonder in your mind what if
your story is put on the screen. The biggest challenge to overcome lies in how to deliver your story. 16
Know your audience.
Amusing incidents of your friends deserve no spot at job interviews. Likewise, your friends might find
a story about your work boring. 17 With people you know well, some jokes might be all right. With
people you don’t know well, keep your stories as least likely to embarrass someone as possible.
18
While you may practice delivering your story for many times, try not to deliver your story as if you
were reading off the paper like a robot. Be cautious of the way you speak, make your delivery seem
authentic and add some personal touches to it. Instead of trying to be perfect, give yourself some room to
improvise (即兴创作).
Make your story more engaging.
When you speak as a certain character in your story, use a different voice to make it clear that the very
character is speaking instead of another. As your story develops, make changes to your voice so that the
audience can get engaged. 19 At serious points, slow your delivery to put your listeners on the edges of
their seats.
Make comfortable eye contact.
Maintaining eye contact helps. 20 Look at someone for a few seconds, then make eye contact with
the next person. Glancing between people or shifting your eyes too much can seem untrustworthy, while
holding eye contact with one person for too long can make him or her uncomfortable.
A. Be mindful of your speech.
B. Here are must-dos for TV lovers.
C. Below are some essential techniques.
D. Quicken your pace to describe action scenes.
E. However, you should find the delicate balance.
F. Practice your speech multiple times before delivering.
G. Keep your audience in mind and tell stories that interest them.
