Watch the video and answer the questions (Activity 1).
1 Which natural heritage site is introduced
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
2 What kind of threat is it facing
The reef is threatened by human activities. Industry along the coast pollutes its waters; illegal fishing is reducing the number of fish; climate change caused by human activities leads to rising temperatures, which bleach /bli:t / the coral. Climate change also makes the water more acidic / s d k/, causing coral to grow more slowly.

3 What measures are taken to conserve it
Fortunately, long-term plans are now in place to try to combat the effects of climate change. The reef became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and today is carefully monitored. Areas of the reef where living things reproduce(生物繁殖) are now protected, and measures are being taken to stop tourists and fishing boats damaging the reef further. The islands around the reef are also protected from fire and pests. Through actions such as these, it is hoped that the Great Barrier Reef will be conserved for future generations.

In the first reading passage, the author uses his own experience to describe the challenges of constructing the railway and the solutions. In this way, the author wants to tell us that we should protect nature while developing human society.
