Leo grew up by a river’s edge, watching it transform from a clear river to a dirty stream. His heart sank each time he saw fish struggling in the polluted water, and he promised to make a difference.
Determined to save his beloved river, Leo committed his life to studying environmental science and technology. After years of hard work and perseverance, he earned a scholarship to a key university, where he dived into water purification technologies. Leo’s mind was flooded with a host of ideas, each more innovative than the last. He dreamed of creating a cost-effective, eco-friendly program that could cleanse his village’s river and serve as a model for other polluted water bodies.
Upon graduating, Leo returned to his village with a sense of urgency and purpose. He gathered a small team of like-minded individuals and set up a makeshift lab beside the river. Day in and day out, they conducted experiments, tested chemicals, and analyzed water samples. The villagers watched curiously, some suspicious, others hopeful. But Leo’s unwavering (坚定不移的) dedication inspired everyone around him.
After months of trial and error, Leo and his team finally developed a ground-breaking technology. They created a solar-powered water purification system that used natural minerals and UV light to purge pollutants. The system was not only effective but also sustainable, requiring minimal maintenance and operational costs. With great anticipation, Leo and his team installed the purification system at the river’s source. Slowly but surely, the
water began to clear, revealing fish swimming freely once again. The villagers, who had initially doubted Leo’s efforts, now praised him as a hero.
Leo’s achievement did not stop there. He traveled to neighboring communities, sharing his technology and training locals on how to maintain and operate the purification system. His work caught the attention of environmental organizations, which funded further research and development, enabling Leo to refine his technology even more. Leo knows that his mission is far from complete, but he is pleased that his efforts have sparked a movement, inspiring countless others to take action against water pollution and protect the planet for future generations.

Ever wondered why you reach for a snack after hitting the gym Research shows that physical exercise often leads to increased food consumption. With countless sports events airing and our screens constantly filled with sports’ competitions, a new question arises: Can watching sports on a screen also influence how much we eat
The answer is yes. Our research co-authored with Jannine Lasaleta indicates that watching sports’ videos can increase candy consumption. But there is more to the story: The difficulty of the sports you are watching may play a crucial role in these effects.
We first invited 112 students to the Grenoble Ecole de Management experimental lab to watch a video and test some candies. Half of the students watched a video with men and women playing sports, while the other half watched one without any physical activity. We then gave each student a 7 0g cup of candy and asked them to judge its quality for three minutes. The students who saw the sports’ video ate more candy than those who saw the one
without physical activity.
Our initial test thus revealed that watching sports’ videos can boost candy consumption, but here’s another question: male students abandoned themselves to far more candy than female students. So were the results set off by males’ consumption Plus, we were still unsure if the type of sport watched affects the candy intake.
To learn more, we invited just the female students to watch videos displaying either easy (light running) or difficult-to-perform sports (long jump, gymnastics, baseball or rock climbing). After that, the students were invited to test the same candies as before. Students who watched the easy sports video ate much more candy than those who watched the difficult sports video. We can thus conclude that the ease or difficulty of the exercise shown significantly impacts candy consumption — watching easy-to- perform sports leads to considerably higher candy intake than watching difficult ones.
Should you watch the Olympic games if you want to keep up with your diet Of course, but it might be better to choose the physical activities you find the most difficult to perform — and watch them without moderation.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By raising questions. B. By analyzing reasons.
C. By giving an example. D. By making a comparison.
9. What’s the purpose of conducting the experiments
A. To find out what candies suit sports lovers.
B. To gain insight into what influences candy intake.
C. To analyse the degree of difficulty of certain sport.
D. To erase doubts about the differences on food choices.
10. What’s the author’s suggestion for those trying to maintain a diet
A. Avoiding sharing sports videos altogether.
B. Enjoying candies while watching sports videos.
C. Choosing sports videos showing demanding exercises.
D. Watching fewer sports videos regardless of the content.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Exercise Stimulates Your Appetite.
B. Sports Videos Make You Healthier.
C. Candy Tastes Better After Watching Sports Videos.
D. Sports Video Viewing Increases Food Consumption.
D
One of the disadvantages of traditional fitness trackers and other wearable devices is that their batteries eventually run out of juice. But what if in the future, wearable technology could use body heat to power itself
Researchers from University of Washington (UW) have developed a flexible, durable electronic model that can harvest energy from body heat automatically and turn it into electricity that can be used to power small electronics, such as batteries, sensors or LEDs.
The team detailed these models in a paper published in Advanced Materials. “I had this vision a long time ago,” said Mohammad Malakooti, UW assistant professor of mechanical engineering. “When you put this device on your skin, it uses your body heat to directly power an LED. As soon as you put the device on, the LED lights up. This wasn’t possible before.” Traditionally, devices that use heat to generate electricity are rigid and easily-broken, but Malakooti and his team previously created one that is highly flexible and soft so that it can fit in with the shape of someone’s arm.
This new device has three main layers. At the center are rigid thermoelectric semiconductors that do the work of transforming heat into electricity. To provide stretchability, conductivity and electrical self-healing, the semiconductors are connected with printed liquid metal traces. Additionally, tiny drops of liquid metal are put into the outer layers to boost heat transfer to the semiconductors and keep them flexible since the metal stays liquid at room temperature. Everything except the semiconductors was designed and developed in Malakooti’s lab.
“In addition to wearables, these devices could be useful in other applications,” Malakooti said. One idea involves using these devices with electronics that get hot. “You can imagine sticking these devices onto warm electronics and using that extra heat to power small sensors,” Malakooti said. “This could be especially helpful in data centers, where servers and computing equipment consume substantial electricity and generate heat, requiring even more electricity to keep them cool. Plus, these devices also work backwards, in that adding electricity allows them to heat or cool surfaces, which opens up another avenue for applications.”
12. What’s a distinct disadvantage of conventional devices
A. They are easy to use up power. B. They are unable to harvest energy.
C. They are too flexible to wear comfortably. D. They cannot be used to power small electronics.
13. What did Mohammad Malakooti think of the new device
A. It was impractical. B. It was revolutionary.
C. It was time-saving. D. It was energy- consuming.
14. What does paragraph 4 focus on about the device
A. Its design process. B. Its existing restrictions.
C. Its unique structure. D. Its potential applications.
15. What might be talked about in the following paragraph
A. The disadvantages of the new device.
B. The methods of using the new device.
C. The reasons for applying the new device.
D. The prospect of employing the new device in more fields.

Sara was a shy and reserved girl, often lost in the crowd, preferring the safety of shadows over the glaring spotlight. She was the type of person who would avoid eye contact and shrink into herself when called upon in class. Public speaking was her worst nightmare, and she often found herself doubting her abilities, questioning whether she had what it took to succeed.
Sara had a close friend named Chelsea, who was outgoing and confident, the type of person who could command attention with just a glance. Chelsea deeply understood that beneath Sara’s shy appearance lay a hidden talent for speaking — a gift she had once showed on stage. She could see potential in her that nobody could ignore. Two years ago, Sara once participated in a school speech contest, but her nerves got the best of her, and she stumbled (不顺畅地说) through her presentation, ultimately losing to the confidence and fluency of her competitors. That experience had left a lasting scar, causing her to withdraw even deeper into her shell, convinced that the spotlight was not meant for her.
Chelsea, however, refused to let her friend’s past failure define the girl. She had always been supportive of Sara, encouraging her to step out of her inner fear and shine again. She often recommended stories of other famous speakers who had faced similar barriers but persevered, using their struggles as fuel to reach greater heights. Chelsea wanted Sara to see that one failed attempt did not mean failure; it was simply a lesson waiting to be learned. With patience and unwavering belief in her abilities, she hoped to guide her out of the shadows of her past and into the light of her true potential.
One day, the school announced another speech contest, and Chelsea immediately thought of Sara, believing that this was the perfect opportunity for Sara to break out of her shell. She ran all the way to tell Sara to try it as soon as possible.
